It appears XBOX 360 not Backward compatible

Post by Boom »

While this does not make it official, here's a link at TeamXbox that seems to have the know.

God that is something I really want

Forbes article contradicts that.
Video game geeks, your fantasy has come true.

One of the best-selling video games of all time, Final Fantasy, will be available for the first time on Microsoft's (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ) Xbox. The company also confirmed that some of the top-selling current Xbox games will work with the forthcoming Xbox 360, due out later this year. Typically, customers are forced to spend an average of $50 on new video games every time a new hardware console comes out.

I would love to have it, but if they decide to pass up the feature I won't be all that disappointed. I have my Xbox for that.

He said with the best selling games, not all of them.

Partial backwards compatibility.

Partial works just fine for me.

The games I most want backwards compatibility with are not best sellers (those will have sequels at or soon after launch):
Deathrow
Winning Eleven 8
Moto GP
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Cabela's Deer Hunt 2004

I hope the Xbox 360 makes me forget about these classics if they don't make the backwards compatibility list.

Partially backward compatible? I'd bet that a large chunk of games published by MGS are going to be BWC and that is about it.

I'm going to reserve final judgement on the next-gen stuff until I can get a good look at them at E3, but the more I hear about the Xbox 360, the less interested I become.

Leave it to MS to make something partially backwards compatible

I'm still in the mindset of toughing the next year out with just my Xbox. I still have so many games that have laods of life left in them, and I'm not ready to begin the cycle of $300, $50, $50, etc.. all over again.

What this most likely means is that MS is covering it's butt where sony didn't a few years back. Meaning most of the game will work but some older xbox games might not due to some reason or another. It's just making sure people realize that sometimes there are games that simply won't work due to technical reasons, that's all. At least that's what i've read and what it sounds like to me.

I have no idea what partially backward compatible means which is the problem. It's a confusing statement. But given Microsoft's past track record it isn't an encouraging phrase.

Yeah, I'm having trouble understanding what they mean by partial compatibility. Do they mean the compatibility is emulated and they are only including code for the most popular games? I'm thinking of Bleem running PS1 games on the Dreamcast or something equally bizarre.

When was the last time you thought of Bleem? :D

Maybe I just missed an article or video. But in the video I saw he simply said "you will be able to play all your Favortie Xbox titles on the 360"

I never heard him say you will only be able to play your favortie titles. Is this simply people interpting his statements in the wrong way?

Well this comes from the Xbox website.

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/e32005/200505 ... ssbriefing

The company also announced Xbox 360 will be backward-compatible with top-selling Xbox games. In addition, more than 160 games are in development for Xbox 360, with 25 to 40 games slated for release this calendar year. All are optimized for high-definition output (720p and 1080i).

Also this quote from another website

"Backward-compatibility is not the reason people buy a new system," said David Hufford, Microsoft Xbox group product manager. "The perception is that it is significant. We've put all our energy into new titles, but since our consumers have asked for it...we've made it a goal to make all titles backward-compatible."

I think there are legal issues involved as the Xbox (this gen) software has to be emulated (via software) on the Xbox 360, and not through hardware like the PS3 and Rev.

i think the 1st plan was not to go backwards but when ps3 dropped its specs, MS had no choice but to change its tune.

Well that certainly is more specific. Maybe Xbox games that are 720 or better can be emulated, who knows.

I agree with the statement that it is perceived as being more important then it actually is. I know I never played a PS1 game on my PS2 and I can't think of any friends who did either.

I also understand that to some it is a big issue though, anyway thanks for setting me straight.
