I didn't think Perfect Dark Zero looked that much better than what we already have. What did they say, fifty-something player online games? That is impressive but they must have cut back graphics. The screen of the main character didn't really look that special.
There are detailed intros showing up at various sites now that the MTV show has aired. Here is one:
http://www7.tomshardware.com/game/200505121/index.html
I like the wireless controllers and how they pair up. Must be Bluetooth or something similar. The ability to turn the console on and off is nice as is the button to instantly go to the dashboard.
I'm not sure about wirelessly streaming video, especially HDTV video, from a Media Center PC, even with 802.11g.
It looks like they're including a 20 GB drive in the base unit which is upgradeable later. Nice that they let you plug in MP3 player or even the PSP to play music, videos or view pictures. I'm guessing it won't support the iPod tho.
No price yet, no launch date but that should be next week? No word on backwards compatibility either.

I'm probably going to get one at launch, but this movie certainly wasn't the pivoting factor.
This movie was a tech geek's wet dream, nothing more. But then again, what would you expect from Microsoft? It took that approach with the Xbox -- our console has better specs and tech capabilities than yours -- and it appears to be taking the same tack with Xbox 360.
Swell. But that doesn't mean sh*t if the software -- uh, games -- isn't any good. And this video shows us nothing about the games.
Will EA continue to give Xbox 360 users sh*tty PS2 ports until the PS3 is released? And will we continue to get sh*tty PS3 ports if its technically inferior to the Xbox 360?
And what about Microsoft Game Studios' games? Will they be as good as Forza or as underwhelming as nearly the entire XSN lineup?
And will MS stick with all of these community features if they don't catch fire immediately? MS sure gave up on XSN pretty damn quickly despite promising to change the face of sports gaming online.
Again, XSN failed because the games that were supposed to show off the muscle of the service were pretty mediocre at best.
Microsoft can trumpet its technical prowess all it wants, but I think everyone assumes that Sony will release a machine with similar or better power with the PS3. And when that happens, it all will come down to games and market equity.
Sony has shown a clear lead in both of those categories.
I'm pretty stoked about the Xbox 360 because its online features look really cool, and Xbox Live gaming is about the only thing that keeps me in the hobby these days.
But the lack of emphasis on software -- and the lack of any in-game footage at all -- shows that I still don't think Microsoft "gets it" as much as it should regarding console gaming. That's very ironic, considering that Microsoft was built on software, not specs and hardware.
Other than Xbox Live, which is clearly superior to PS2 online, do you know of any gamers who gush over the Xbox's technical specs? I don't.
What causes Xbox gamers to gush are killer XBL titles unique to the Xbox, such as Forza and Halo 2.
This next generation of consoles sure will be interesting.
P.S.: Why the hell does J Allard think he's some sort of geek gamer sex symbol? The guy annoys the f*ck out of me. All of his esoteric babble makes me think he's the Michael Stipe of gaming. He sure has the Stipe "look" down pat.
Take care,
PK

On the MTV show, they showed bits of Tiger Woods, NFS and Madden. They didn't say anything about them but it sounds like these are being prepped for launch.pk500 wrote:Will EA continue to give Xbox 360 users sh*tty PS2 ports until the PS3 is released? So if the new Madden engine debuts on the 360, maybe they will port to the PS3 and Revolution instead of the other way around.

More good news: every console will come with a 20 GB harddrive. After all of the rumors and speculation that there would be 2 different units available it's refreshing to hear that the HD is standard on all units.

Oh, and NBA 2k6, Ghost Recon 3, PGR3, Gears of War, and Quake 4 looked amazing.

Well obviously if they're going to tout it as some mega-multimedia machine, they damn well better include a hard drive. They're talking streaming audio and video as well as mp3 and wma format which just can't be done with memory sticks. Well it can be done, just not very well.ScoopBrady wrote:More good news: every console will come with a 20 GB harddrive. I think it is a smart move they made by just focusing on the system and Live tonight. The game companies want to make their own announcements and E3 is a week away. I expect you'll get all your game info and more detailed info on Xbox360 there.pk500 wrote:Swell. But that doesn't mean sh*t if the software -- uh, games -- isn't any good. I'm willing to bet MS comes strong with a good launch lineup, but in the end will it really matter? I remember the PS2 launch lineup, I had like two titles and was like "now what do I do". I bought the PS2 on the pure Hype machine that is Sony, and I'm sure I will buy the Xbox 360 for the same reasons... excuse me while I go graze on some grass (bah...bah...bah)

It is nice to know more about the Xbox 360, but that video seriously annoyed me...seriously. I share PK's disdain for J Allard, everytime I see or hear him talk, I like him less and less. I honestly don't give a sh*t about how cool you and your team think you are, shut up, get off the screen and show me some game footage. This sort of self-congratulatory marketing swill really makes me not want to buy an Xbox 360. But wait, we made it concave in shape so it would be like a big "inhale"...
goodness, get over yourselves.

I think I'm firmly in the 'not so excited' camp with the next-gen stuff. Maybe after getting the trailers blasted at me all next week at E3 will make me change my tune. But if I see J Allard's mug up one of those huge plasma screens waxing poetic about his gamertag or some crap, I just may lose it.

I'm pretty damn excited about this. The Hard Drive news may have really tipped the scales for me. This may be the first ever console i buy at launch. I'm ready to sell my xbox now and start saving. Anyone notice that they said the cpu is water cooled? That's pretty damn impressive. THat is something that only hardcore PC gamers have been doing. It's been getting a little more mainstream lately but for a console to use that kind of technology is pretty cool. This could mean a quieter console as well as one with less risk of overheating. We'll see how it performs. It's hard to imagine a water cooling system in such a small space. Sorry for the geek out, just had to mention it.
"Be tolerant of those who describe a sporting moment as their best ever. We do not lack imagination, nor have we had sad and barren lives; it is just that real life is paler, duller, and contains less potential for unexpected delirium." -Nick Hornby
It's all about the games. Since I play sports games, Sony has the lead. Sony has an in-house sports development team. The PS3 will have 2 baseball games. Microsoft -unless they revive High Heat - doesn't.
No way am I going to get something at launch - especially with the inevitable hardware problems. I will let you guys be the guinea pigs and buy the 360. I am also against the idea of forced 'packages' where you can't just get the damn console and have to buy the package 'deal' that comes with several games I will never play.

She also has a very large, boob-a-licious rack with plenty of room for four-wheel-drive adventures between her baps.Sudz wrote:the Tracey chick has an odd shped RACK

It's not the water cooling you're thinking of. It's just heat pipes that are filled with water. It's the same technology that is used in the little XPC's that Shuttle makes (you know, the little cubes). You're thinking of the systems that pump water through the whole thing...it's not even close to being like that. It's just water, sitting in a pipe that connects directly to the exhaust fans so that the air can flow over the pipes. It's strictly a marketing gimmick rather than being a fully functional water cooled system.LAking wrote:Anyone notice that they said the cpu is water cooled? That's pretty damn impressive. That video was much better than what aired on MTV. In fact, I think what aired on MTV may actually have done some damage to MS in the hardcore community and people who planned to be early adopters.
The MTV special did not show much game footage, and most of what they did shw looked terrible. Tony Hawk looked bad, Perfect dark looked average.
On the flip side, Project Gotham 3 and Need for Speed were real stunners.
The problem MS is going torun into, and I think this is the case with Perfect Dark, is the factthat many early 360 games were originally planned for the XBox and are getting ported up. That's not the way to show off hardware and win over critics, because games won't look as flashy as they could.
Despite all this, I'll be there at launch. ESPECIALLY is there's backwards compatibility.
