DB, sounds like you are much more patient than I am. It is definitely better to give up a few tenths of a second on some of the turns rather than losing 10 seconds running off road.
I tend to use the Gilles Villeneuve approach--you never know where the edge is until you go over it. Unfortunately I have to learn to avoid going over that edge again and again...
Has anyone tried running the prototypes in a hot lapping session? Holy sh*t, I took the Caddy LMP out at Laguna and the sense of speed was unbelievable.

I am much more comfortable overbraking than braking too late and trying to make up for it. I generally am able to race pretty well offline but online is a different story. Online I generally end up braking late while someone is behind me. It's something I have to overcome but it's hard since I'm just used to getting slammed from behind (get your minds out of the gutter boys) when I'm cautious and I end up losing even more time as a result. Once the positioning settles down and it's clear behind me I'm able to be cautious and generally fare much better. I'm the guy who brakes to avoid hitting the guy in front of me in the first major turn but ends up getting mauled from behind as a result.
The only times I feel comfortable being cautious in a corner online with someone behind me is if it's PK or Terry because I know they won't slam into me and they'll tell me when and where they're passing me.

I am a patient boy.
I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait.
My time is water down a drain.

Yep. The Bentley Speed 8 in a Nurburgring hot-lapping session is pure motoring bliss. Unbelievably fast and nimble, with sick stopping power from the brakes.Dave wrote:Has anyone tried running the prototypes in a hot lapping session? Take care,

Bring it on... The Audi refuses to be intimidated by a mere measly Civic. Although R32 had a real good setup on his little Golf last night. I spent some time tuning the Audi, so it should be a little better. ;0Zeppo wrote:Unorganized Thoughts on Forza:
level upgrades. I can't wait to try it out against Fishguy's Audi and get my butt kicked. But then to get more upgrades to make it better, but still have to keep it a D1 car.

New Racer
Guys,
Like MetMan, I've been around DSP for a while, but haven't posted very much, if at all. I got this game last night, and it's clear to me that I'm going to be playing this for some time so I'd like the opportunity to find some cool guys to race with.
I only had enough time to run some offline races last night to get my Mini up to a D1, then ran 3 random races on-line. I had a blast, but it's going to take some time to get comfortable with the braking...
Anyway, hope to see you guys on Live!

I, for one, will not drive with assists off. At least not for the forseeable future. It's insane for someone who is well versed in racing games to proclaim "Driving with all assists off is the only way to play this game".JackB1 wrote:I dont know that driving with assists on gives you an advantage? Doesn't it slow you down some? The only advantage might be the green line on the track. You can probably run faster lap times with assists off, dont you think?
I noticed a huge difference with assists off than when they were on and it wasn't a good thing either. You basically cannot brake and turn at the same time so if you go into a corner hard and try and lock it down and turn, it won't happen.
Jack, just play the game the way you want to. What's the fun in playing it the way someone else tells you to and finishing 25 seconds behind every race. I tried assists off and didn't like it. In the future they will be on for me and if that bothers someone, just don't invite me to your race.

Why? For me, it is the only way to play the game. The ultimate challenge. And driving with assists off will make you a better driver whether you're well versed in racing games or not.Badgun wrote:It's insane for someone who is well versed in racing games to proclaim "Driving with all assists off is the only way to play this game".
Bottom line is what's more important to you in the short term, becoming a better driver or high finishes in races?
Your mileage may vary, and it clearly does. That doesn't make you any less of a racing gamer.
But just like some like to play baseball games at the fastest pitch speed and with all batting and fielding assists off, I think the "purest," most realistic way to play Forza is with all assists off.
Take care,
PK

Easy Badgun...
In real life, can you lock up your brakes and turn? If your answer is no, which it is, then why would you want to be able to do that in the game? If you want to turn and brake at the same time, go play Burnout or Need for Speed. The point of poker nights is for the guys to run with approximately the same setups...if you want your hand held, go right ahead...eventually it will only slow you down.
I'd think you'd be motivated to LEARN how to brake correctly so that you don't lock em up. We were all locking them up and running right off the course for the first hour or so last night. After you learn how to ease into the brakes, even braking a little ealier, it can be damn rewarding. That's why Forza is so sweet...plus, in the long run, running with assists on will only slow you down when the rest of us have mastered the driving model without all of the assists on. Just a thought.

it took me almost 2 hours before it finally clicked last night. i kept doing the "slam on brakes and down shift like mad" into every turn before i finally realized that i need to gently apply the brakes, down shift to my gear and accelerate out of the turn.
once it clicked though, made playing a lot easier.
i also started the game with all assists off. the only one i had on was the driving line, but i am going to turn that off tonight as well.
taking an 850 hp skyline around road atlanta is gaming bliss
and as others have mentioned, i hope you guys dont mind if i add you to my friends list for comparison purposes or the occassional online session.

This game is going to cost me a lot of sleep!!!!
Observations:
-I like the time splits, nice + over Toca, you know where at least the person in front of you and behind is
-Braking is a new experience for me, but seems to be a lot more realistic. I will have to learn how to brake before the corner
-Start grid order: Judging from my placing last night and info in the single player game, it simulates qualifying, so if you have a better car, you're more likely going to be up front...
-30 seconds definitely isn't long enough on longer courses, especially when you're in career mode playing with people better than you. Going to be frustrating for the casual racers to gain a lot of money playing career mode
-the class system is excellent, as PK said, no more hopped up car beating out wimpy cars
-In public games it would be nice to control the amount of assists, in our DSP games, I think it should be up to the individual, I won't use anyting except for the Auto myself, but I could see using the driving line for hot lapping practice...
-consistency and concentration in this game is a must, the red "penalty" timing to the laps really is a good indicator
-Pick up the Prima guide, it's excellent, I normally don't buy guides, this one is pretty good
My "Fishatar"
Played around with the Drivatar feature:
-excellent learning tool for learning better/smoother lines
-it gives you a "critique"/percentage of ever corner and averages this into a final score per turn type, somewhat humbling with it telling you that you suck a lot.
-The more you train the better it seems to get, I hotlapped Maple Valley 7 or 8 laps and it learned from that track how to drive it better, other tracks that was just based on the initial training just didn't do well
-funny, it picked up that I was breaking/checking up early into some corners during the training, mostly cause I didn't know the track, but it did catch onto the behavior to the detriment of it's driving
-The drivatar takes a lot of your credits when it's racing, one race I did, it won with 14k, but took 10.5k of it as a fee, without the rarity bonus and difficulty bonus, I think my cut would have been really low.
-on the flip side, this is a great way to earn a little money on a longer course by letting the computer do your work while you read the forums, etc.
-You have no interaction with the drivatar during the race vs. the GT4 B-Spec feature where you control the aggressiveness of the driver
Hmmm, back to racing...

I concur with the masses; this game really does live up to the hype. Offline is fun and challenging if you set everything to the highest difficulty, plus you earn so many more credits that way. My only complaint about the offline game so far is that the replays aren't very good. There are huge framerate drops all over the place that makes the whole presentation a little sloppy.
Online was fantastic. I didn't notice any lag except early on with Badgun at our first Laguna race, which was weird cause I think his connection was showing 3 bars while we were in the lobby.
Something else that was strange was I kept showing up as offline when I was definitely online. I changed the option of "appear offline" to "appear online" and it made no difference.
Great game, great times last night - this one's a keeper. But never again shall we try the downhill races in the prototypes.

Ive suped up my Lexus so look out.
I had forgotten that I was downloading a pretty big file at about 127k p/sec so that was eating up some of my bandwidth. After I shut the download off, the problem went away. So that was definitely my fault.spooky157 wrote:I concur with the masses; this game really does live up to the hype.
