OT: Kentucky Derby

Post by lexbur »

Anybody else looking forward to the race? Who do you like?

Man, I can't wait until 6:04 pm Saturday!!! I've been thinking about it all week. I'm not sure why, I've known for months who I'm betting.

Stupid reasoning but here goes: my grandfather, who LOVED going to the track (or the back room at the barbershop), his name was Alex, my name is Alex, and my grandfather lived his entire life on "Fleet" Avenue. He would be spinning in his grave if I wasn't all over Afleet Alex.

I never take the favorites in the Derby, but this year I have no choice.

And considering I haven't picked the winner since Thunder Gulch came in at 25:1 in '95, you guys would be wise to stay away from Afleet Alex. :)

Afleet Alex isn't the favorite, though. ;) Bellamy Road is, and should be, the favorite. A 120 Beyer figure for the Wood pretty much locked him in as the morning like pick. I don't think Afleet Alex wants anything to do with a mile and a quarter and the jockey riding him..pass. This is the best Derby in YEARS though. A really top class field.

All that said, I hope Bandini wins.

Yeah, I know. Afleet Alex is the second choice right now. What I meant was I never like to take any of the top favorites. Of course, this could explain why I haven't hit it in ten years. :)

Hopefully, Steinbrenner's horse will do as well as his ballclub's been doing lately.

I took a trip to Keeneland for the Bluegrass stakes and Bandini won me some money since I picked him to win. So I hope he wins the derby too. In fact, I might go to the track here in houston and put a little money on him again. I haven't researched too much but apparently Bellamy Road hasn't been great other than the one race where he got the 120 beyer number.

By the way on my trip to Keeneland we got to take a couple of private tours of some ranches. We got to see some breeding sessions. If you have never seen a horse breeding session you don't know what you are missing. 8O
