California Chrome’s co-owner steps back from rant

Post by JackB1 »

http://nypost.com/2014/06/09/chromes-co ... ack-rants/

looks like someone forced him to finally appologize for his post race rants.

What do you guys think about having "fresh" horses running against horses that have run 3 major races back to back?
I think it's just part of the deal and it's what makes winning the Triple Crown so difficult. I couldn't believe how much
money was bet on CA Chrome, since history shows the winner of the 1st 2 races almost NEVER wins the 3rd.

The bottom line are these are 3 stand-alone races that have nothing to do with each other. It's not a series. The
"Triple Crown" is just a phrase that someone invented, like in tennis we have the "Grand Slam". If horse racing
somewhere down the road chooses to make it more fair, they can, but for now there can be no complaints from
owners that choose to run their horses in all 3 races. I think it would be a good idea to space these 3 major
races out more, so that this argument is a non issue. Maybe one race per month?

On a related note, CA Chrome looks like he will recover from the gash he got on his foot at the start of the Belmont.
We will never know if it affected his performance, but you gotta think it didn't help :)

Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Affirmed, Citation and Man O' War would have kicked the ass of any horse put beside them. This was just sour grapes from the graveyard of many a Triple Crown favorite.

The Belmont isn't easy. Winning a Triple Crown shouldn't be, either. All of the horses in the race Saturday were 3-year-olds, correct? Shouldn't the Triple Crown winner be the best 3-year-old in the world for those three races? Chrome wasn't.

I agree it would be nice to spread out the Triple Crown over a longer duration. That would create a more fair playing field for horses that run all three races.

Still, Chrome would have won Saturday if it was a true great. And only legends should win the Triple Crown. Equine Darwinism prevailed Saturday.

I don't know....I kind of agree with what he's saying though. I've always thought that the Preakness and Belmont races should only be open to the horses that ran in the derby or qualified for it. I believe there is a points systems that determines if you make the derby. Does seem a bit unfair to have a fresh horse running in the Belmont that didn't run the other two races.

Then the other 2 events need to devise their own point system or requirements.

Nobody is forcing any of the owners to enter into all 3 events. If they do, they realize it's going to be awfully tough to win in succession.
Just part of the deal IMO. Is it "fair"? Depends on what you are trying to be fair about.

What PK said can be applied to any Sport. Was it fair the Heat had almost a week off before playing Indy? Was it fair the AC system quit working in San Antonio? Only the greats overcome adversity over their competition at any level. And yeah Secretariat was a BEAST.

Good point.

In the tennis majors, many times one of the finalists gets an extra day off and the other one may have just played a grueling 4 hour match.
It's impossible to always have a perfectly level playing field for all.

It's ironic this rant came from Coburn, a self-styled John Wayne type, because it was an anthem for the "everything must be fair; everyone must get a cookie" mentality that poisons America and American sport these days.

It's also ironic Coburn's whining came one day after the 70th anniversary of D-Day. Can you imagine if the Allied soldiers had Coburn's attitude? "IT'S NOT FAIR -- the Germans have been dug in on this coast in pillboxes and concrete bunkers for FOUR YEARS! How are we supposed to compete with that?"

Lets change the rules and lessen every great accomplishment of Champions before him, wouldnt it be great if we had a triple crown winner every year or if it was Xmas every day.

I don't see anything wrong w/ the guy said. I liked his passion and honesty. Also they interviewed him right after the race. So all that was still on his chest. His honesty was refreshing.

I agree with this.

His honesty and passion were refreshing, but his argument didn't hold any water.

He was very disappointed...I get it. He probably had everything riding on this race...I get it.
But those comments comparing the Triple Crown races to him playing basketball versus a kid in
a wheelchair were juat weird and nonsensical.

Rich guy pissed because he would have made more money if his horse won Triple Crown.

Nobody would care except he made an ass of himself.

Nice try. Steve Coburn works in a factory that puts magnetic strips on credit cards:

Wow, that's their business, magnetic strips on credit cards?

And he turned down $8 million?

Doesn't he know credit cards are going to chips instead of magnetic strips?
