OT: Can anyone recommend a good stationary bike?

Post by Theo »

Also, a good place to buy one. I tried the local sporting goods store and the selection is very small. I would like to have an upright stationary bike. My budget is around $600. Thanks for any advice.

Do you already own a road or mountain bike? If so, buy a trainer and ride your existing bike indoors. It's what I do all winter here in upstate N.Y.

You can get a quality trainer for $300. You can get an inexpensive one for $100. Riding your existing bike on a trainer is more comfortable and efficient than any indoor stationary bike. A hell of a lot easier to move around, too.

Check out www.nashbar.com for deals on trainers, and don't hesitate to PM me with questions.

Take care,
PK

Have to echo Paul's view - get a trainer if you already have an outdoor bike. Otherwise, I'd recommend picking up a used:

Lemond RevMaster - http://www.lemondfitness.com/products/r ... index.html
one of the CycleOps products - http://www.cycleops.com/clubSales/06Cyc ... atalog.pdf
Or if you really have cash to burn, a Velotron - http://www.racermateinc.com/velotron.asp

If you already have a bike, my favorite trainer is a Computrainer - http://www.racermateinc.com/computrainer.asp

The Tacx i-Magic may be another one to consider. What these trainers have in common is that they have a PC interface so it's not as boring as being on a regular trainer. They also have power feedback which is nice for tracking weight loss and performance increases.

Where in Houston are you?

James:

Most people have an existing solution to trainer boredom: a TV. Works for me! :)

But the Computrainer solution is very nice if you have the cake. Very nice, especially if you're serious about indoor training.

I just use indoor training to keep some semblance of a cycling fitness base during the winter. Plus I just love being on the bike, just like you. Indoor soccer, pond hockey and X-C and downhill skiing also provide other means of cross-training during the winter for me.

Thanks for the feedback. I don't have a bike as of yet. I will consider these choices. Thanks again.
