Re: NFL Season 2010
He'd still have his scholarship.
He just wouldn't have his eligibility if he entered the draft.
But by playing without being paid, he'd be putting his body on the line. All it takes is a lineman being blocked right into his knees. He would still be a good QB prospect but NFL teams might push him lower in the draft.
It didn't work out for Locker, it arguably didn't work out for Leinart and there are probably other examples.
Unless he turns out to be the next Frank Gehry and he owns a firm that gets commissions for all the biggest projects in the world, he's not going to earn first-pick NFL money. I think Bradford got a guarantee of around $50 million. Now if he was an engineering whiz like Stanford alums Brin and Page and he founded the next Google or FB, then that's another story. But I think those guys and the FB founder left school without completing their degrees.

The Google guys were PhD students who left I think. People follow the money so there's probably some uncertainty about the NFL next year.wco81 wrote:He'd still have his scholarship.

I don't give a f*ck about Luck, as the Bills had no chance to get him. But I suppose I don't like him now because the Bills' chances of getting Newton just dwindled.

Couldn't agree more. I think my Eagles drew the worst opening round team possible in the Pack. Don't get me wrong, I think the Birds can beat the Pack but it ain't gonna be easy. The Eagles are so banged up on D its ridiculous. Every team has injuries but the Eagles have been decimated by them from the D line thru the LBs thru the secondary.matthewk wrote:Danimal wrote: The NFC really is a toss up right now (with the exception of the Seahawks).
I would love another shot at the Bears but any opponent would look better than the Pack right now. They scare me.

Eh, you're better off not getting Newton, who played in an offense that is going to be nothing like what he will see in the NFL.

Sad to say I'm rooting against Newton after all the crap he got away with this year.wco81 wrote:Eh, you're better off not getting Newton, who played in an offense that is going to be nothing like what he will see in the NFL.

wow. Luck decides to stay at Stanford.
will this convince Harbaugh to remain an additional year, and try to win a National Championship ?

Re: NFL Season 2010
Looks like Harbaugh turned down 8 million a year to coach the Dolphins so the reports now say is that Tony 'lame duck' Sparano is still the HC. The Dolphins are a mess thanks to stupid owners like Wayne H and now Stephen R.
I need to find a new team these guys are a joke of a franchise.

Re: NFL Season 2010
ESPN said that Dolphins never made a firm offer.
It makes Harbaugh look a bit flaky, going from team to team and now back to school. He's more about the money than really wanting to coach at the highest levels.
Same question of Luck. Maybe he doesn't have the fire in the belly to excel in the NFL. Leinart liked the college life and apparently Locker did too. If things get tough once he's in the NFL, maybe Luck will decide to play architect?

Re: NFL Season 2010
That's utter bullshit and according to the Miami Herald that response was EXPECTED. Multiple sources said the Dolphins dangled $7-8 million per year and Harbaugh said no, thank you Jim and I mean it. Stephen Ross is the South Beach version of Dan Synder and possibly worse, if that's even possible.wco81 wrote:ESPN said that Dolphins never made a firm offer.

At least i'm happy with the fact that these turn of events all became possible because for the first time in the Miami sports landscape the Miami Dolphins are no longer the IT team in town. They have been leapfrogged by the Miami Heat and Stephen Ross is nervous that for all the money he spent on the Dolphins he'll have to put up with the Heatles for the next 6-8 years.
Ross is an idiot owner, and I hope the Dolphins finish dead last the next 6-8 years regardless of who coaches that train wreck of a team.

weak move.
a kid (Luck) passes on 50+ million, to remain in school to try to win a Nat'l Championship. And the coach can't wait one extra year, and jumps to the NFL. Not impressed.

Re: NFL Season 2010
Stanford loses a lot of key players to graduation/nfl this year (including major parts of his o-line). The odds they complete for a title next year are slim IMO. They won't be terrible, but hard to imagine running the table. Luck should have entered the draft & got his degree down the road (ala Shaq & other 1st rounders).vinny-b wrote:weak move.

Re: NFL Season 2010
After the soap opera this week, it's doubtful Harbaugh would have gotten offered this kind of money again.
49ers are overpaying because he's made a big splash in the Bay Area and that could help ticket sales.
Miami, apparently the owner there didn't like being overshadowed by the Heat so after the big Orange Bowl game jumped in. If Harbaugh got $8 million with the Dolphins, you can imagine Bellichek would try to run it up on the Dolphins every time they played.
Next year, teams looking for coaches may not be as impressed by Harbaugh as these two teams.
So you strike while the iron is hot. That's a lesson Harbaugh needs to impress on Luck. No degree compares to the prospect of $50-60 million. If he's going to succeed as an architect, it won't be because of that degree. The degree might get him in some firms with Stanford alumni, though at this point, if he never completed his degree and played in the NFL for about 10 years and then decided to try to get a job in a firm, some Stanford alum will give him a job. Once he's an architect, the degree won't mean anything if his designs are panned -- and a lot of well-educated architects have suffered that fate.

Re: NFL Season 2010
It's a fact and has been reported a lot in Miami the last few months how Ross got worried when the Heat signed LeBron, and Bosh to team up with D-Wade. Heat tickets are really tough to get and Dolphin tickets have been easy to come by. In Miami it's pretty much all Heat talk.wco81 wrote:Miami, apparently the owner there didn't like being overshadowed by the Heat so after the big Orange Bowl game jumped in. The only thing that will correct this disaster is like DB eluded to is clean house which means bringing in Cowher who like Parcells would demand to run things with his own staff. Jeff Ireland is now damaged goods and most feel sorry for Sparano, so he's probably milking it now.
Re: NFL Season 2010
Pretty sure the Football crowd will be focused on the Colts-Jets game tomorrow. Although the Colts have been rather inconsistent this season, I doubt R. Ryan's boys will be able to stop Peyton who thrives at this time of the year. Colts win 27-17.
Of course I will be following the Hawks-Saints game and in the best impersonation of the late R. Dangerfield, P. Carroll better have the speech of his life in the locker room against NO. Still, Seahawks will get no respect at home and even M. Hasselbeck looks ready to start the game, the Saints just have too many weapons to destroy SEA. Besides the cheering crowd, too many things have to be going perfect for SEA to pull any kind of an upset. Don't see it. NO 34-14.
But hey , Go Hawks!

Are Jim Harbaugh and Andrew Luck married? Why must Harbaugh stay at Stanford when his coaching star never will burn brighter than right now?vinny-b wrote:weak move.

If Harbaugh wins the national title next year, it only reaffirms the brilliance he established with this 11-1 season. If Stanford goes 8-4, then Harbaugh isn't the hottest coach in America on Jan. 7, 2012, being wooed by NFL teams.
LZ Granderson absolutely nails the question of "loyalty" of head coaches in this column:

What if Luck hurts his knee or shoulder next year? NFL scouts and GM's are terrified if a top prospect shows up at the Combine with a hangnail, so if Luck has just finished rehabbing a bad knee or shoulder, he's not going to be the No. 1 draft pick in the 2012 draft.
Or what if he stays healthy and has a mediocre year compared to 2010? Just look at Mark Ingram for an example. Heisman and 1,658 yards rushing in 2009, knee injury and 875 yards in 2010. I know Ingram couldn't have come out for the NFL Draft after winning the Heisman as a sophomore, but he's an example of a player whose numbers dipped after a great year.

Might want to look at Sam Bradford as exhibit A before you make that statement.pk500 wrote:What if Luck hurts his knee or shoulder next year? With his history and their offensive line, I really didnt think Bradford had a chance in hell to make it through an entire season. You never know.

He's the exception, not the rule. Plus, I can't recall: Was Bradford the consensus No. 1 after winning the Heisman if he was draft-eligible?dbdynsty25 wrote:Might want to look at Sam Bradford as exhibit A before you make that statement.pk500 wrote:What if Luck hurts his knee or shoulder next year?
