Sid The Kid became the youngest NHL player to reach the 200 points mark beating an old record by #99.

Another player got drilled in the head without the puck while the refs looked on and did nothing:
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Tomas Kaberle was taken off the ice on a stretcher after being blind-sided by a late hit by New Jersey tough guy Cam Janssen in the second period Friday night.

Kaberle was hit in the head by Janssen about 2 or 3 seconds after he made a pass in his own end of the ice. The Toronto player then fell to the ice and hit his head against the side boards at the Continental Airlines Arena.

Kaberle lay on the ice for a couple of minutes before he sat up. A neck brace was attached and then he was placed on a stretcher and wheeled off the ice.

A Maple Leafs spokesman said Kaberle was alert after being taken off the ice and that he was being taken to a hospital for observation.

Referees Kelly Sutherland and Brad Watson didn't call a penalty.

Im still waiting for a call against Carolina when they cheap shoted Saku Koivu out of the playoffs and nearly into a cemetery last year. The refs looked right at it and pretended they worked for the NBA.

That hit was so blatantly late that he should be canned for the rest of the season. Disgusting. But good for P. Maurice to keep his cool instead of telling his players 'Go & run them'. TO's tough guys D. Tucker (who's still injured) came out of the dressing room to yap at Janssen, while W. Belak wasn't in the lineup.

With incidents like this in the last two weeks, I'll say it again, since the NHL is doing nothing about late head hits, bring back the instigator rule.

Gary Roberts who was brought to PIT for his grit and toughness had a good tilt in CAR.

After seein Laraque in just two games with the Pens I'm really impressed with him. I thought he was just a guy with muscle but when he's on the ice he makes plays and actually drew a penalty while controlling the puck last night, what a great pickup.

Toronto came back and won the game 4-3 in the shootout. I think they might have been better off putting their biggest guy in the shootout and have him skate directly into Brodeur at full speed, maybe putting him out for the playoffs.

I guess I don't really mean that, but I think the tough guys/thugs on team like the Devils and Senators would be much less likely to throw such terribly late and high hits if they knew there would be some decent retaliation.

Finally saw this hit this evening, James, and I beg to differ with you. I think it sends a pretty clear message that the Leafs are a soft team since no one on the ice immediately went after Janssen after that hit.

It's a pretty pathetic commentary about the Leafs that the only guy willing to stand up for Kaberle was Tucker, who wasn't even in the lineup.

Teams will get that message and continue to run top Leafs' players. Chicken-sh*t move by Maurice and the Leafs' lineup.

Take care,
PK

I think we have to be careful here, for the sake of the game. Because a particular team sees ahead that their counterpart has not dressed any goons or has dressed mostly skilled players on the ice, doesn't mean that you can go at liberty and go head hunting like C. Janssen did. Even D. Cherry called it a cheapshot.

TO's tough guys were D. Tucker who was injured and W. Belak who wasn't dressed. I am sure any of those two guys would have taken Janssen on a fight. By the way he was just suspended for three games. Ridicoulus.

PK, nice feature on Smytty tonight on HNIC and still more to come if you're watching. Now, I hope your Oils take care of those Flames tonight.[/i]

7-10 games would have been better, but I'm surprised and fairly pleased there was any suspension at all.

I don't actually think Toronto not having its tough guys dressed made much of a difference here. If don't think a player like Janssen or Neil is going to worry about fighting another tough guy when they see an opportunity to seriously injure one of the other team's best players with a headshot. Fighting is something they might do in the game anyway.

Let's say Pittsburgh play Ottawa in the playoffs, and Chris Neil takes out Crosby with exactly the same hit he used to knock out Drury. Laraque might fight him on the next shift, but Neil is a tough guy who can defend himself and isn't going to be scared. Even if he loses the fight, the Senators would almost certainly win a series against a Penguins team without Crosby.

If we're going to rely on the threat of retaliation to keep skilled players safe, then the threat has to be that if you take out one of our guys, we take out two of yours. Tough guys obviously aren't scared at all by the threat of having to fight another tough guy.

I agree here....someone on the Leafs has to step up in that situation, regardless who was on the ice for them. If you go back to the original Neil on Drury hit, the first guy to step up for the Sabres was Drew Stafford....hardly an NHL tough guy but he wasted no time in dropping his gloves and standing up for his team. If Maurice knows that Janssen is dressing for that game, he needs to make sure that Belak is also in the lineup. As far as I know Belak was just a healthy scratch.

well - got to see the "new look" Isles in action last night at the Verizon Center..

1- Ryan Smyth was a great pickup (even if it ends up short term). Finally they have someone to crash the net/stay in front of the net

2- Another issue in the 3rd period where they gave up two goals in less than a 40 second span 8O .. that better be fixed SOON!

3- it must have been "Edmonton South" night as Satan (2), Bergeron, & Smyth provided the spark - ps.. i really like the pickup of Bergeron as well.. man has a blast of a slapper.

4- Nothing like hearing a "Let's go Islanders" chant in a road stadium.. most of the Cap fans sat quiet (save for the two goal outburst in the 3rd). Come to think of it, there were a TON of Isles fans at the game last night.

5- Shut down Alex, you shut down the Caps for the most part.

Playoff atmosphere at the garage where top place in the division and third overall conference standing was at stake. This Wild team is dangerous, and entertaining to watch believe it or not. They have more talent and they don't play as defensive as before. They also have a lot of speed led by M. Gaborik and they'll raise an eye or two in the playoffs.

Game ended in SO with the 'Nucks edging the Wild 4-3.

I never thought I'd live long enough to see the Penguins sweep a season series from the Flyers. I know the Flyers got at least one point in 8 games against them, but jeesh. Then again, if you would have told me when I was a kid that the Steelers would someday tie the all-time series against the Browns I never would have believed that either.

What's with NBC not showing the clock for time remaining on power plays. Was it broken? I don't recall that being an issue in past telecasts and it seems like something that would be standard in all hockey broadcasts.

Damn Pacific time zone games, I can never make it through the second intermission. The Canucks aboslutely destroyed the Wild in the second period, I hadn't watched MN get dominated like that for a long stretch in a long time.

Not sure how many points they had last night, but going into last night's game, Gaborik and Demitra had combined for 40 points in the last 14 games. Those two have a freakish sense of what the other is doing on the ice. Gabby's return also bolstered the second line, giving guys like Bouchard and Rolston more favorable matchups.

Should be fun to see what they do in the playoffs.

Georgie cycles the puck really well, for two reasons. One, he's brutally strong. Two, cycling has been a staple of the Edmonton offense for the last few seasons.

Laraque is extremely active in the community, too. Loves that part of the job. He'll become a cult hero in Steel City if he hasn't already.

Bergie can be very effective during a regular shift as long as he's paired with a very strong defensive defenseman who also can move the puck well out of the defensive zone. The kid has more defensive shortcomings than Lindsay Lohan has empty liquor bottles in the back seat of her Porsche.

Bergeron was made to look very good last season in Edmonton because he was paired with one Chris Pronger. Once Pronger left, Bergie's many deficiencies in his end were exposed. Very nice kid, though.

Who's he paired with on the Isles?

No doubt, especially now with Zubris gone.

I noticed that last week. I turned on NBC and thought one team was doing an exceptional job of keeping the puck in the offensive zone, only to realize they were actually on a PP.

hey, I'm still realing from the Patty LaFontaine deal :P

I dont know if it was just for the Caps game, but it appeared Bergeron was paired with, yikes, one more former Oiler, Tom Poti.

They are a fun team to watch nowadays, something I never imagined myself saying. They added more talent and since Gaborik came back from his injury, the team has been on a tear. He's a gamebreaker and like you said, he just makes evryone better.

'Nucks played very well last night but a late PP for MIN tied the game. They have two solid goaltenders and we all know they are very solid defensively. One of those teams no one wants to face in the playoffs.

After that hit, Brind'Amour looked like the Nick Brophy character in "Slap Shot" who just stood next to the boards, pissing on himself, after he was drunk on the ice and drilled by Ned Braden of the Charlestown Chiefs. Just lifeless, limp, standing there embarrassed.

It takes a very large, very powerful man to hurt Rod the Bod. And Georges is that guy. The only scarier physical specimen in the NHL is Boogaard of Minnesota, who is a Cro-Magnon on skates at 6-7, 275.
