Are you sure about that? That would be perfect timing for us as my wife and I are near the end of season 4 on Netflix. Otherwise I was going to just buy the last episodes when we get there.TheTruth wrote:That's pretty sweet. Awesome. I bought that for my father for Christmas.

AMC will end 2013 in style with a four-day marathon of Breaking Bad. From Fri., Dec. 27 through Mon., Dec. 30 (starting at Noon/11c each day), the series' critically acclaimed five seasons roll out back-to-back starting with the Pilot on through the unforgettable Series Finale.

Thanks. I thought Truth's post was relating to Netflix getting all episodes. Marathon is probably not for me. This show is intense, so I like to watch one episode at a time and think about it in between. My wife and I have been watching about 4 a week.vader29 wrote:Was in the Breaking Bad email newsletter:Pete1210 wrote:Are you sure about that? I accidentally clicked on page one of this thread, and PK was dropping mad knowledge.

Now I'm re-reading his recent posts so I know what I'll be watching in 2017.pk500 wrote:"Breaking Bad" -- AMC (superb new dark comedy-drama)
"Friday Night Lights" -- NBC (have watched every episode since its inception, although it has slipped a bit this season)
"Dream Team" -- SkyTV via Fox Soccer Channel (my guilty, soapy pleasure)
"Mad Men" -- AMC (the most atmospheric, well-written show on TV. Season 1 is over, in reruns. Season 2 will start in June or July)
I'm catching up on "The Wire" via the torrents. On Season 3 now. Sheer brilliance in every aspect of writing and acting.
Another show very worthy of catching on the torrents is "Trailer Park Boys." One of the three funniest shows I've ever seen on TV, right there with the BBC version of "The Office" and "All in the Family."
Take care,
PK

Just started catching some episodes of the Big Bang Theory and find it hilarious. I would love to start from season 1, but can't seem to find any online services that stream it. Any suggestions?

Completed a binge of Downton Abbey. Good series to see with the wife. PBS is airing Season 4 now.

My wife and I watched the first two seasons of Girls (HBO) this weekend. Totally dig that show.

The wife and I are big fans as well. Great writing and very real content. I think it helps connect to the show if you were ever a 20 something in a big city after college which we both were.FifaInspected wrote:

I had not heard of it until I saw the lead actress/writer (for get her name) on Conan just after season 1 started. What got my interest is when she described the premise something like "it's what really happens when young girls try to recreate what they've seen in 'Sex & the City'".

Saw the movie 'Cloud Atlas' the other night on MAX and my wife and I came away impressed. I think we had largely missed this one as it's release coincided with Sandy in 2012 and extended power outages in my area had displaced us for a week or two. The interweaving stories and styles were reasonably engaging and the lengthy runtime passed without ever really dragging or overstaying its welcome. Beautifully scored and often visually striking, particularly if you can overlook the occasion of performers playing, at times, characters of different ethnicity using makeup with varying results. It's over arcing themes about connections between people and karma are touching and while central, not overwrought. I read somewhere that it is story-telling for story telling's sake, and I agree. I'd definitely recommend it for anyone with a passing interest.

It's funny, i think i've started the book three or four times but either get bored or confused so early on that I give up. As a result it has caused me to have little interest in the movie. I guess I'll have to give the book another try after these reviews.Brando70 wrote:The book is astounding. Brando, is it a book that gets better after the first "x" number of pages? With so much out there to read if I don't get grabbed quickly I bail out, but obviously there are some stories that are worth sticking with and maybe I jumped out too soon.

I thought it was a good start. I liked how they went into the past for the current storyline.
Re: The really great TV thread
personally, haven't viewed any TV show which matches up to Breaking Bad.
while it's an apples & oranges comparison, the nearest current show have uncovered is ARCHER. In the context of intelligent writing, creativity, and overall perfection. A near 10/10, in these respective categories. In other words, as in the case of Breaking Bad, it is at genius level.
as it's basically a cult-show, don't know how many of you gentlemen have seen it. Unlike Family Guy, Simpsons, American Dad, which i consider to be low-brow (sorry if this offends), in contrast Archer is an animation which is very "fast", witty, with excellent writing. In 4 seasons, the show remains completely fresh. Additionally, the globetrotting, and visually appealing design also set it apart from all peers. The characters aren't bad either, (Archer himself, the lovely Lana, the heroin addicted Woodhouse, etc)
thankfully, after checking the season premiere Monday night, it look like Archer Season 5, will be one fun ride. 4 words: Smokey, And, The, Bandit
outside of liking a few episodes of South Park, never really been a fan of modern cartoons/animation. I find the majority very negative, sarcastic. Archer is different. I recommend you give the show a chance, if you haven't yet.
look forward to Season 5

We finished Breaking Bad last weekend. One of the best series I've watched, just under Band of Brothers and The Wire.

I also watch Archer. I wouldn't say it's a great show, but every episodes hits some quality lines. And for reasons I cannot currently put my finger on, season 2 of that show stands out above the others for me as being pitch perfect. I'm hearing good things about the new season and completely changed setting.

As I finally plow through Justified, which I am enjoying immensely, all I can think is how Walton Goggins never won a Best Supporting award. He's fantastic.
Re: The really great TV thread
The worst part about Cloud Atlas is that the first two sections with Adam Ewing and Robert Frobisher are the two most boring parts of the book. I stuck with it because my wife raved about the book (and occasionally teaches it), and by time I hit the third part with Luisa Rey, I was hooked. I not only loved the story, but how David Mitchell jumps from style to style.RallyMonkey wrote:It's funny, i think i've started the book three or four times but either get bored or confused so early on that I give up. The other part that's tough is Sloosha's Crossing in the middle because of the dialect, but I just read a little more slowly and got through it.
It's not an easy read by any means, but I found once I was pulled in I couldn't put it down. A good number of my wife's students don't like it either, because it can be pretty confusing in some sections.

Nice choice of thread.
Bout the first 20 minutes. Liverpool’s 4-0 lead was the fastest in Premier League history.

Anyone a fan of Mr.Selfridge? It was recommended to me as a filler since I finished Downton Abbey. Saw the first episode and really did not like it.
If you don't know, the lead is the actor who played Ari on Entourage. The problem is he plays exactly the same 'Ari' role (at least in the first episode) in this series but the series is set in 1910 London!!!
