Raiders win 2nd straight Super Bowl Title 30-3 over Cowboys

The Oakland Raiders had been dominant all season against the run, and effective at forcing turnovers and converting those turnovers into points.
In Super Bowl XLV against the home-stadium Dallas Cowboys, they couldn't stop the run, but were just as effective at forcing turnovers and being efficient in the passing game to build an insurmountable lead and coast out a victory for the franchise's 5th Super Bowl championship and a cap on the first perfect 19-0 season in NFL history.
Both teams would trade punts on their first possessions as the offenses felt each other out. The Cowboys were able to put an enormous amount of pressure on rookie QB Dane Morrow, who was just as good as advertised in his first championship game. Morrow completed 11 of 15 passes for 192 yards and 2 scores (154.2 QB Rating) and iced the game with a 4th quarter TD pass to Darrius Heyward-Bey.
What was very uncharacteristic was the Raiders' lack of discipline in defending the run. Numerous times defenders overshot a gap, missed a tackle, or just completely missed a play.
"I think we played a little scared out there", Coach Crouch was quick to point out. "Those guys across the sideline can really hurt you if you let them get in a groove in the running game, so I think we just tried so hard to force the big play that it hurt us a few times. It also helped us swing the game in our favor, though. I'll take that."
Indeed it did. On the possession after Oakland scored its first touchdown, FS Michael Huff annihilated Dallas tailback Felix Jones, forcing a fumble that oldie-but-goodie DE Greg Ellis returned 71 yards for the score and a 14-0 lead.
The Cowboys came in with a smart gameplan--try to pass the ball, throwing the Raider defense off-balance with what it expected, and to some extent, it worked. But on their first possession of the third quarter, down 20-3, they decided to return to their roots and hammer away at the Raider defense.
That led to a clock-burning drive that pushed all the way inside the Raider 10, but turned the ball over on downs. That left Dallas Coach Badgun wondering what would have happened if they had tried to pound away earlier.
When the Cowboys turned to the pass, they discovered that the Raiders' pass defense was every bit as good as their #1 ranking. Tony Romo completed just 7 of 17 pass attempts for 85 yards and had 2 interceptions in the game.
As a team, though, Dallas more than doubled the average yardage on the ground that the Raiders surrender--and they actually outrushed the Raiders 149-144, something that hadn't happened all season, and out-possessed Oakland 24:16 to 23:44, out-converted them 4-10 to 2-7. The only place Oakland thoroughly outplayed Dallas was in the passing game, throwing for 100 more yards and 2 touchdowns.
If Badgun resists the temptation to retire, the regular season matchup next year could be a wild one. As it is, the Cowboys hung in there against the two-time defending champions statistically, but 3 mistakes led to a much more lopsided score than the game itself would have indicated.
The Raiders will take it, though.

C'mon Badgun, come back! I want those rematches, and we play the AFC West next season so you get another shot at Terry (assuming EA works it the way it should).
Congrats Terry on your continued dominance in our league. I can't wait to play you next season and hope I can give you a good battle, because I know it will be a good chat online in any case.
Congrats also to Badgun for making it to the big game with only 3 losses all season. I want that Division crown next season, but it won't mean nearly as much without at least three in the division.
Now the big question - when is the draft! I will be out of town from Friday through Sunday. Monday night should be ideal for me, though, as I won't be working - will be traveling back home and going directly to Citi Field from the airport for the Mets game at 1:10 or so. I hope I get in by the start of the 4th inning.

I'm going to go ahead and commit to returning. I really enjoyed this season a lot more once I was able to use my favorite team. I am looking forward to the off season stuff as well.Danimal wrote:Ok I'll get in touch with Jared and we'll get a forum opened and get moving.
I do need to know if Badgun is returning before listing all the free agents.
I've enjoyed this league so much that I feel like I can still commit 2 hours a week to it. I do hope it moves faster this season, though.
Good to hear, man. Like I said in the game, it really was a blast to play you. Very tough D to figure out. The league is better with you in it.
Danimal, can the season be flipped before we do the FA stuff? As far as I can recall, we can go into our rosters and see our progression and whatnot as soon as it flips, so we can start planning drafting strategy, etc.

Indeed congrats to Terry for his repeat SuperBowl win--it certainly sounded like another exciting game. . .
I'm looking forward to season three, but especially so the new FA period and the draft. . .this should be a blast. . .the only bad thing is that we're down to a dozen dedicated virtual gridiron gladiators. . .

Agreed; if I stay as the Dolphins, I will be very lonely with Slumberland leaving. Any way we can recruit?tmdba37 wrote:I'm looking forward to season three, but especially so the new FA period and the draft. . .this should be a blast. . .the only bad thing is that we're down to a dozen dedicated virtual gridiron gladiators. . .
So just tell me what I need to do to keep Witten and Ware. I read through the free agents rules, but I know you said you were changing them some for the next season. I just don't want to do something stupid and cost myself two of the best players in the game.Danimal wrote:To round out the FA list.
