Made the switch from the 360 to PS3 today. Picked up the 40 gig console, HDMI cable and Unchartered.
Haven't played a game yet- the wife and I are just watching Borat on DVD. However, even the DVD playback is much improved from anything I've seen before. Nice to have the upscaling/full screen.
Can't wait till March for The Show (basically why I bought the system) and Pro Yakyu Spirits.
Also considering Planet Earth on Blu Ray but it's a bit pricey.

Welcome aboard Fanatic! Be sure to send me a friend invite. DVD's definitely look pretty damn nice on the PS3's blu-ray player. Now that Warner Bros is going exclusively blu-ray in a few months, you can look forward to plenty of big time movies on the horizon.fanatic wrote:Made the switch from the 360 to PS3 today. I can imagine...I didn't go out for dinner tonight just so I could justify the $90.Leadfoot5 wrote:Was lucky to get this for Christmas this year. It's as good as you would imagine it to be. You'll enjoy the hell out of the blu-ray player and their are finally a small handful of decent games. Uncharted, Rachet and Clank and one being overlooked I highly recommend Folklore.fanatic wrote:Made the switch from the 360 to PS3 today. Picked up the 40 gig console, HDMI cable and Unchartered.

I still personally couldn't get by with just a PS3 I don't think it is going to be the front runner games wise for a long time if ever but I am finally getting enjoyment out of the system besides watching movies.

Yeah, I've heard amazing things about Planet Earth....
Danimal- Yeah, I'm not looking for the PS3 to be the end all be all of gaming. Basically, I'll play The Show, Unchartered, maybe F1 and a couple other games. Combined with the Wii, I'll have my hands full.
The F1 demo is pretty cool...any other must have downloads?

Definitely makes a nice difference......I'm also thinking that my tv is ok for this setting (I'm hoping actually)...The dark scenes are certainly darker, but not sure if I'm losing detail, etc...sportdan30 wrote:Maybe this is old news to some of you, but were you PS3 owners aware of this?
EDIT: From what I understand, this is only for people using HDMI cables.

I wasn't sure where to put this but I am in need of some help. I bought the program Scoop reccomended for ripping my DVD's so I could view them on my PSP. It's called Apollo DVD to PSP and it is ripping my DVD's fine and saving them as mpeg-4 files.
Now I haven't copied one of these to my psp memory stick yet. But I wanted to see if I could view these things on my PS3 and 360. I have Nero's Media Server running and they view fine on the 360. But whenever I try to view one in my PS3 I hear it start and the audio and it plays for about 15-40 seconds and then comes back and says the data is corrupt. I've never had much success playing any videos on my PS3. In tiversity other videos lag and now this. I even hard wired the PS3 thinking it might have been the wireless connection.
I plan on trying it on my PSP tonight to see if it works, but I am a little nervous that if it's not showing on the PS3 then I am in trouble. I need to get these movies working on the PSP by Monday the day my wife leaves for a trip with my girls.
So on to my questions:
1. Is anyone succesfully streaming video to their PS3 from a PC and if so what Media solution are you using?
2. Is this program I'm using the best method for watching on the PS3? I plan to make a media server with a spare Alienware machine.
3. Is there a specific format I should be saving them in for play on the PS3 and PSP?
Again I have not tried this on a PSP yet because until now it didn't hit me that I might have similar issues.
Thanks in advance.

I would pick up Unchartered...a great experience, and visually very impressive. That should keep you busy for a good 10 hours. In terms of accessories, I did the same as you- hdmi and that's it. An extra controller can come later (when rumble returns).XXXIV wrote:Im heading out to Best Buy a little later...
Besides and HDMI cable and a copy of Beerfest on Blu ray what else do I need to get when I pick up my PS3?.....
Formula One is another game I'm itching to try...
The most money to be had is from the Craigslist/Ebay route I suppose. However, I couldn't be bothered to go through the process of having people over, etc....So I took it into a local store that give you more than EB would. Not much more mind you, but good enough.kicko wrote:wow the resent bly-ray brew-ha and my new hdtv are telling me to get my 360 fixed and trade it in for ps3.
well that and The Show.
where's the best deal? on trade in's?
Ditto. And don't overlook Ratchet & Clank if you even have a passing interest in action platformers.fanatic wrote:I would pick up Unchartered...XXXIV wrote:Im heading out to Best Buy a little later...

I bought a PS3 today. I've decided to bite the bullet and switch from HD-DVD to blu-ray and the PS3 seemed like the best choice. I traded in all my HD-DVDs at Amoeba music (my fellow Californians will know of this great place, although their movie prices suck) and bought a few Blu-Ray titles with the credit. It wasn't exactly an even trade but at least I got some value for them before they become worthless coasters.
I also bought the Nyko Bluewave IR remote for the PS3. It comes with a USB dongle with an IR sensor and a remote. Now I can use my Harmony 880 with the PS3. The lack of IR was one of the biggest reasons for not purchasing an PS3 a while back.
I'm not getting rid of my 360, no way, no how. I still plan on doing most of my gaming on the 360 as I love live and prefer the 360 controller. I'm glad I can finally enjoy The Show and any other exclusives I might have missed out on.
I also have a question. Do you guys think I should get the extended warranty from Best Buy? I haven't oppened the box yet, how long is the standard Sony warranty?

Well not that anyone responded but the movies play fine on my PSP.
I'll try copying the actual mpeg to the PS3 hard drive and playing it. If that works then I know the issue is not a format issue but a streaming issue.

Save the package for that HDMI cable so you can take it back when the much cheaper one you get off the Internet arrives. I think I paid $6 for my cable.XXXIV wrote:Im heading out to Best Buy a little later...

Uncharted is one of my all time favorites, but again, there is no need to pay full price when the ebay values have really plummeted (I'm assuming that a lot of people got it for Christmas and finished it quick flooding the market). The Show could be purchased for probably $20 as well so no need to buy any games at Best Buy if you've waited this long. Rent something if you need something to hold you over.
I actually bought my first Blu-ray today (Planet Earth) because I had a Christmas gift card that was burning a hole in my wallet.
I haven't looked but I assume it's one year.
I've never bough an extended warranty for anything.
So either I'm covered until December by my Amex or Sony had a 90 day labor warranty and my Amex would have only extended that to 1 year so I'm not covered.
No sign of problems though (knock on wood) other than NHL sometimes locking up online and my having to quit out of the game or resetting the PS3.

I'm using Nero Media Home as my media server and have no problems streaming videos to my PS3. Originally I did but it was because of my Linksys router...they are not to "friendly" with the PS3. I changed routers (Netgear) and bingo. Well, that and I had to make an adjustment with my anti virus program. I use Norton 360 and I had to make my network "trusted" as compared to "limited." After that I have had no problems. What router are you using?Danimal wrote:I wasn't sure where to put this but I am in need of some help. BTW, I use a number of programs to convert videos to MPEG4 - Nero 8 Ultimate and PS3 Video 9 being the two main ones.
