LTE, and WiMax before it, could have been game-changers, having speeds that rival most home broadband connections.
Imagine having one 4G account to use at home and on the road.
But obviously with low caps, you can't use it at home.
It'll be useful for serving up mobile ads faster.

Speculation about 4G pricing:
http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2011/01/13/ ... djemTECH_h
Because of the higher costs of subsidizing handsets, carriers may price 4G data high or impose caps so that people who go over are paying higher monthly bills.

Re: The IPhone is totally awesome oh my gawd thread
Yawn. There was ALWAYS a cap...they just never advertised it! I know many people who have gotten letters from Verizon that have warned them about data usage. The only way to get to 5GB (which was the old cap w/ Verizon) was when you would tether your phone to a laptop (or use the wifi hotspot feature that is now included @ the cost of another 20 bucks btw).
The prices will be the same...all of this speculation is pointless. And why exactly are LTE handsets more expensive than 3g? They aren't...it's just a different radio w/ different frequencies. Cost is virtually identical.
Where do you get this stuff wco? Do you just make it up to see if anyone believes you? Is that fun?

Make what up?
The analysts who follow the company and industry think they will try to increase ARPU because a) Verizon was mum about 4G pricing and b) they have a greater subsidy to make up.
Not to mention the capital the carriers have to spend for new network infrastructure, the billions they spent to acquire rights to new spectrum.
The overage charges they instituted is a de facto price increase.
Verizon is going to keep prices low out of the goodness of their heart?

Re: The IPhone is totally awesome oh my gawd thread
Absolutely not...they are going to keep their prices competitive w/ the 4G competition which is in line with their current 3G pricing...you think they are going to all of the sudden double the price of their 4G product when there are competing (albeit inferior) networks offering significantly faster networks than Verizon's 3G one at the same price?wco81 wrote:The overage charges they instituted is a de facto price increase.

Of course overage charges are an increase...but no one is going to hit those overages but the upper 5%. Downloading and whatnot is not going to increase 20 times over because the network is faster for 95% of the smartphone toting world. That upper 5% has already maxed out their 3G and gets termination notices regularly for exceeding the 5GB cap that Verizon ALWAYS has had on their "unlimited" data plans. It's a shady way to do it, but it is in the TOS, just not very apparent.

Skype iPhone App question: Been using Skype lately. It's great except when I get a "real" (cell) call while on Skype, it cuts-off my skype call to show me the "real" call. Is there a way to stop this from happening? Even if I don't answer the 'real' call, it basically kills the skype call.

For all the rationalizations, I don't think this is very surprising. So much pent up demand for it.“In just our first two hours, we had already sold more phones than any first day launch in our history,” said Verizon Wireless president and chief Dan Mead. “And, when you consider these initial orders were placed between the hours of 3 a.m. and 5 a.m., it is an incredible success story.”
Re: The IPhone is totally awesome oh my gawd thread
Actually is surprising given it's a 6-7 month old model with a new model on the horizon.
Or it may be hype.
But if it's like several hundred thousand, then Apple is going to have a problem releasing iPhone 5 at the same time for GSM and CDMA. They had enough problems last year, having enough ready in the first few months, not being able to roll it out to all the countries at once.
So while it probably outsells any other smart phone model, you have several carriers releasing Android phones throughout the year, able to collectively ship more. These days, companies buy up manufacturing capacity as needed with contract manufacturers. But it's still one company and they have to make bets on what kind of demand over time a particular product will have.
Apple may have to go with simpler to manufacture designs, to be able to produce more units faster. They obviously though it would be easier to make white phones out of the glass back than it turned out to be.

Re: The IPhone is totally awesome oh my gawd thread
Yeah, Apple is screwed.

Re: The IPhone is totally awesome oh my gawd thread
No they have a nice problem on their hands.
They couldn't produce product fast enough and as much money as they made, they left a lot of money at the table.
I can still remember console launches where if they sold 100k on opening weekend, it was hailed as a big success. Apple is probably able to sell over 1 million units every year and it's still not enough to meet demand.
The difficulty is keeping the supply flow going so that in the weeks following launch, people are able to still buy. They couldn't resupply fast enough and they never did ship the white models. Even without antennagate, the design seems to be a hassle to manufacture.

I'm starting to buy into the thought process that there may not be any summer release this year and that they'll do a simultaneous release for both carriers at this time next year and that will become the new cycle.

I thought Apple hinted at an iPhone 5 during the Verizon launch. If I was a betting man, I'd say look for an iPad 2 to release around April. Look for the iPhone 5 in the usual iPhone time. I don't think they are skipping a year at this point when sales of iPhones and iPads are making them boatloads of money.
Re: The IPhone is totally awesome oh my gawd thread
They're definitely going to have something before Xmas.
And they probably sourced all the components for iPhone 4 months ago and now, they'd have to buy different components anyways.

Bloomberg review of Verizon iPhone turns out to be just a comparison between AT&T and Verizon models (not that there's much difference at all).

Does the droid have instagram? I just downloaded that and it's pretty awesome if you take a ton of phone photos.

It's cause you bought low-end Android phones. Of course you're not missing your Honda Civic when you're driving a Benz now...it's just that it could have been a Bentley.jLp vAkEr0 wrote:I'm loving my inferior iPhone 4.

Re: The IPhone is totally awesome oh my gawd thread
It's not the OS...I'll tell you that for starters. There definitely are a few horrendous battery life performers...Evo 4G being the biggest culprit. It sucks because it's a flagship Sprint device and HTC can't make a decent phone with regards to battery power. The HTC Incredible on Verizon is the same way. I'll always be partial to Motorolas...awesome battery life on the Droid, Droid 2 and the X.greggsand wrote:Had a few friends bail on android. could stand the battery life compared to the iphone 4.
Moral of the story...smartphones are all bad for the most part. If I can get one day out of them, I'm cool with that.

Nah, I get to use good Android phones (Galaxy S) on a daily basis and I just prefer iOS at the moment.dbdynsty25 wrote:It's cause you bought low-end Android phones. My wife has a Captivate and every time I use it, I can't want to get back to
my iPhone. The iPhone is so much more intuitive.
