I noticed the IPhone comes in 8, 16 & 32 GB models. Does that mean you are stuck with that
amount of memory forever? Also, is 8 GB enough for "normal" amounts of mp3's, games, etc?
I would think that unless you load it up with tons of movies, 8Gb would be enough. I have a 2Gb
card on my current phone and I haven't used that up yet.

thanks for any advice. I think I might upgrade to the IPhone 3GS for $99 w/ ATT.
None of the cheaper options sound worthwhile to me. The other option would be
to get a IPhone 4 16Gb for another $99 ($199 total). Do you think it's worth another
$99 for the 4?

Yes it's worth the additional $99, which compared to what you will spend on the contract is nothing for 2 years with a better phone.

Better screen, more RAM, faster processor, more storage, etc. Go see it in person and compare.

The review I read on CNET doesn't make the IPhone 4 sound that much better than the 3GS. I guess whether or not it's worth the extra $100 is a personal
decision. My biggest issue right now is deciding if 8Gb will be enough for me? I really hate it that the IPhone's storage can't be individually upgraded. Apple is
getting as bad as Microsoft will all these restrictions.

8 GB is fine if you don't load several movies along with big apps (GPS apps like TomTOm which load a gig of maps).

But if you want a lot of music on there, it depends on how big your library is.

The storage is not a restriction. It's their way to get you to upgrade every couple of years. Sure other phones come with micro SD slots but minimal internal memory and limitations on what you can store on the micro SD cards. That and you don't get the thin design when you add things like removable battery covers, card slots, etc.

If you're not going to look at the phone in person before you buy, then you're just going to have to rely on that CNet review. The improvement in screen resolution alone should make it obvious it's a big step up, not to mention faster processor, more RAM, more storage, gyroscope, etc.

I hate to say it but smart phones have a lifespan of about 18 months these days. After 18 months, the phone is outdated. I could still be using the first gen iPhone but that's not like it held up well.

I do wish they could bring down the costs so that it was around $199 to upgrade regardless of contract status.

That is a problem when you have to get locked into a 2 yr contract to get one for a cheap price.

The 3G is just over 2 years old and it's performance has really degraded with iOS 4.

New features are nice but when the apps. and features you used to use are more painful to use because of the new OS, it seems the lifespan is only 1 year. You can attribute it to a conspiracy to make you upgrade but there's so much competition that they're trying to top each other in software features. As they add more and more such features, older hardware doesn't run the newer OS releases as fast.

Of course hardware is changing fast too. Moore's Law is not as much of a factor in computers but it is definitely a factor in mobile devices, with a lot of activity around the SOCs used for smart phones and tablets. Most of it is around ARM-based silicon but Intel isn't going to give up on this market so they're going to be pushing their platform next year.

Then you have other components like cameras and storage improving incrementally.

But most people do not upgrade every year. The upgrade prices discourage that behavior. The hype machine though is effective at getting people to window-shop well before their contract is up.

No.

iTunes will probably pester you tho whenever you sync it.

But with 3GS and 4, there's no reason not to. There are some useful new features.

You don't have to, but if u bought a new iphone, it may come already installed. I had a 3g on 4.0, & it was sluggish!

Whatever you do, do not upgrade your 3g / 3gs to the latest os4 updates. It took my speedy, reliable and really enjoyable 3g and turned it into a device I don't even like anymore. I can no longer listen to music and type (email or text) without the music stuttering and then finally hanging. The delay to get to my text messages now is in the 6-10 second range, same with accessing my music. Oh. My battery life is down to about 2-3 hours after a full nights charge. It used to get me to at least dinner time with heavy use.

As an Apple guy for the last 10 years i'm really disappointed in how they are handling this. Go into an apple store and mention the horrible side effects of updating and they will most likely tell you that "this is the first time we've heard of this".. Right. I can go down the mall to the ATT store and they are well aware of the problem.

I've had no problems with the os4 on my 3Gs and I really like all the new features. I do know quite a few people with a 3G that are having serious problems with sluggishness, but I've read that apple is aware of these issues and will male a patch available soon to address them as best they can.

They're trying to nudge 3G users towards upgrading to iPhone 4.

Even before the slower performance, which they're supposedly working on fixing, they're offering fewer features for 3G owners.

The latest feature they've dropped from the 4.1 beta is Gamecenter, which will apparently be only for 3GS and 4 models.

No issues updating to the latest OS4 from the 3GS for me, the issue is mainly with the 3G model.

Here are some suggestions if you own a 3G.

Jack,

I've got the 8gb and i'm fine on space. I've got loads of apps, music, over 700 pics and a handful of videos and i've still got 2gb free. However, my iPhone is not my primary Ipod, i've got 310 songs on my phone currently.

Yep. At least the photos and movies. The music should already be in your itunes. Connect your iPhone via USB to your pc then access it like a hard drive. Go in the folders and find your pics. Drag and drop them onto your pc and then sync them with your new iPhone.

Is there any way to access the photos that I copied to the iphone thru the usb connection and thru a "explorer" type interface? I copied too many pics over when I synched it with Itunes and cant find a way to delete them?

Well, after much deliberation I decided to go with an IPhone 4.

Was considering a Samsung Vibrant (TMo) but I have already purchased so many apps and games on my Ipod Touch plus, I really just like the iOS over all feel and navigation.

Att has great coverage in PR so, way better than TMobile so the switch was good in all areas.

I did have to get the 2gb data plan but I always use WiFi whenever it's available so that should be enough.

Anyways, loving the IPhone!
