Re: NHL 2010/2011 Season
I really wish all players had to wear visors. Shawn Thornton had his forehead sliced open last night by a skate and had 40 stitches as a result, which would have been prevented had he had a visor on. I know it probably won't happen any time soon due to the macho culture in hockey, but I think it's nuts for the league not to implement a visor policy.
Re: NHL 2010/2011 Season
When you think about it, 65% + of the players are already wearing visors nowadays. Yes, there's a little macho ego culture lingering around but for those guys that don't wear it's still a comfort issue which is dumb to say the least. Let's see play a bit uncomfortable now (adjustment period) or risk losing an eye.toonarmy wrote:I really wish all players had to wear visors. Malhotra's injury happened in neutral zone, in a total innocent play and not only he's gone for the year but his career is in danger too.
I am sure it's not in the immediate GM's agenda but I would give 3 years max before visors are mandatory.
Re: NHL 2010/2011 Season
Actually, 59% of NHL players currently wear visors. The younger players have a higher percentage though. In 2005 only 38% of players wore visors, so we've gone from 38 to 59 in a fairly short amount of time. That's at least encouraging.10spro wrote:When you think about it, 65% + of the players are already wearing visors nowadays. According to the latest survey 65% of players under the age of 30 wear a visor and 59% is the average of guys protecting their eyes. Yes, the numbers are much better compared to a few years ago. Here's an interest read from C. Cole.

Re: NHL 2010/2011 Season
It's still 41 percent too low. And the "comfort" excuse is a steaming load of horsesh*t. There's nothing uncomfortable about wearing a visor. It doesn't touch your face or tighten the fit of the helmet. It doesn't even impede your vision like some players say.toonarmy wrote:Actually, 59% of NHL players currently wear visors. The only argument is fogging, but anti-fog solutions have all but eliminated that problem. It's also nothing that a dry towel on the bench can't fix, either.

Anyone see the little clip on Versus last night of Crosby practicing stickhandling drills? He went thru like 3 of them and then made the goalie look ridiculous as he backhanded one top shelf. It was nuts!

Good story. Hopefully Cole interviewed MacT on purpose to help make his point. MacT put the Neanderthal culture prevalent in the NHL on full display by saying visors don't need to be mandatory because he can't remember the last time a guy lost an eye playing the game.10spro wrote:According to the latest survey 65% of players under the age of 30 wear a visor and 59% is the average of guys protecting their eyes. Yep, Bryan Berard didn't lose that eye, so he's doing just fine, MacT.
I guess MacT saw no danger or problem in this, either:

Moron.

Re: NHL 2010/2011 Season
Yo, what happened to the Wings? I know there are having some goaltending issues but 10 goals from the Blues? DET's record has been mediocre at home and they certainly got clipped tonight.
Re: NHL 2010/2011 Season
Another trophy is this remarkable year for the 'Nuckers as they continue to celebrate their 40th year of existence. They take the President's trophy after beating the Kings at home while D. Sedin continue to lead the league in points after taking 2 more points tonight. MVP, MVP was the chant for Daniel as he's a serious candidate for the Hart silverware.
Now, there's only one Cup that matters in this city and everyone knows it. Nothing matters more than reaching at least to the finals of the Stanley Cup.
Well done boys. Now let's go get Lord Stanley.

Ominous warning, James: Only one Presidents' Trophy winner in the last 10 years has hoisted the Mug the same year. Red Wings.
Good luck!
Good luck!

Very interesting part one of a Hockey News feature on how the NHL can end the concussion epidemic:

Re: NHL 2010/2011 Season
Well aware of that fact. Just check the Caps last season. But as a fan, I can't help but give them kudos for a season well done. Injuries and all, they overcame hurdles and obstacles, they've been virtually unbeatable on the road something they've been having problems with last year and more importantly they've been setting up all these little goals and achieving them with a quiet confidence. First PP, first PK, most goals scored, etc.pk500 wrote:Ominous warning, James: Only one Presidents' Trophy winner in the last 10 years has hoisted the Mug the same year. Red Wings.

No one was overjoyed last night for getting the President's trophy yesterday, everyone knows which silverware matters the most.
Hey, I've been a Canucks sufferer for 40 years now, and even tough the franchise has reached the level of respectability for the past 15, 18 years, the beginning was hard to watch.
OK, the pampering stops here, coach V better start resting some dudes now with four games left. Look forward to the playoffs.
Re: NHL 2010/2011 Season
With fan support like this, Vancouver can't lose.

Re: NHL 2010/2011 Season
Saw those dudes on TV last night, no wonder chicks are having problems dating in this town.
Re: NHL 2010/2011 Season
Not too shabby. The Canucks have scored the most goals in the NHL (253), allowed the fewest (177) and have recorded the top power-play and penalty-killing percentages (24.7% and 86.6%, respectively). No club in the League's 'expansion era' (since 1967-68) has finished first in each of these categories in a single season.

Very impressive, indeed. Wouldn't bother me one bit to see the Canucks win the Cup.10spro wrote:Well aware of that fact. Just check the Caps last season. Re: NHL 2010/2011 Season
Being a Sharks fan I know how worthless the President's trophy is when it comes to winning a Stanley Cup. Vancouver had a great season and is a fun team to watch, but I'm not sure if they are the best playoff team going into the NHL's "second season." I think everything for them depends on Luongo. If the dominating Luongo shows up they have a great chance at the Cup, but if he is merely mediocre then I think the Cup goes to someone else. On paper I would hate to face Van in a seven-game series, that's for sure.
Re: NHL 2010/2011 Season
Ya the Presidents trophy doesnt mean anything but like chicken soup it cant hurt.
It will be interesting to see if the Nucks can play at the same level when the game changes. Playoff hockey is a different game.
For what its worth, I think they are far better prepared as a team to play for real than the Caps were last year.

Re: NHL 2010/2011 Season
Have to agree with that last statement. The Canucks, IMO, are far superior to the playoff Caps last year. I never felt as if the Caps of last year were really all that of a dominant team, whereas the Nucks this year are pretty clearly a dominant team.XXXIV wrote:Ya the Presidents trophy doesnt mean anything but like chicken soup it cant hurt.

Re: NHL 2010/2011 Season
Of all the stats, I am most proud of the least goals allowed so far. For a D that's been decimated by injuries since January, the rash of injuries would have gutted the team in previous years faster than the East side chop shop.Naples39 wrote:Not too shabby. The Canucks have scored the most goals in the NHL (253), allowed the fewest (177) and have recorded the top power-play and penalty-killing percentages (24.7% and 86.6%, respectively). Of course Luongo and Schneider have a lot to do with their stingy blueline.
Agree with you gens about the playoffs. Personally I think if they don't reach to the finals with this team it would be a complete failure despite all the accolades achieved so far.
Re: NHL 2010/2011 Season
The Flyers should pull their goalie with a minute left in OT if they have possession of the puck. They would have a better chance of winning than in the shootout.
Re: NHL 2010/2011 Season
I jokingly said the same thing to a friend today. In the 5 shootouts the Flyers have been in in the last few weeks, their goalies' save percentage is 44%. Take away Bobrovsky saving 5 of 6 against Dallas, and that percentage drops to 25%. Hopeless.Feanor wrote:The Flyers should pull their goalie with a minute left in OT if they have possession of the puck. They would have a better chance of winning than in the shootout.
Re: NHL 2010/2011 Season
Run for cover, because Leighton is on re-entry waivers.Feanor wrote:I just don't think he can make a come back in Philly after giving up that goal and how he played the whole Finals. And Bob will only get better the more he plays, barring injury, so I'd like to see them give him a chance in the playoffs. He was great against Pittsburgh.
Dreger says he will likely be claimed though because, although the claiming team couldn't use him in this years playoffs, they'd have him locked up next year for $800k. You could certainly do worse than Leighton as your backup at that cost.
