I would have thought Roli would be gone from the Oil, but nothing yet......

Also, the hometown Sens added Martin Lapointe for a pick, which adds toughtness and leadership. However, they need something a lot more to land on their feet again after what's been going on.

I wonder if after the deadline, the rumoured firing of John Paddock is going to occur. (I also hope Emery gets shipped out of town too....)

Oh, 3pm, the deadline is over! Now to wait for the backlog of trades to be announcined..... (on the TSN there's an interesting piece on how a trade actually occurs with the NHL office)

Nobody wants to pay $3 million next season for a goalie who turns 39 a week after Opening Night for the 2008-09 season. Can't say I blame them.

I bet the Oil will buy out Roli this summer.

The Hossa trade is hard to call.

On the one hand the Pens gave up a lot for a rental, but on the other, the Thrashers traded a marquee player for 2 third liners and future assets. Hard to be too excited in ATL.

Gaborik, Demitra and Rolston now are the most well-protected skill players in the NHL, as the Wild got Chris Simon to add to their goon squad of Boogaard and Fedoruk.

Forget the Flyers: Minnesota is the new home of cementheads in the NHL!

A Toronto reporter asked GM Cliff Fletcher that Bryan McCabe had indicated that he might waive his no-trade clause for the right team and then asked if there was a deal proposed for McCabe.

Fletcher's response: "There was no interest."

Actually, another good zinger from james duthie after a few reports of the various traded players being told to stay off the ice at team practices:

Ray Emery is also not on the ice at Sens practice today.

But it's just because he's late again.......

(you need to live here to appreciate it.

I wish he had been traded though!

PIT is definitely going for it this year with the addition of Hossa, although I think they gave up a bit much for a rental player. With E. Malkin contract's up next season, and the signings of Staal and Crosby, the cap is going to get right up there for the Pens and I doubt they can afford a rental guy like Hossa. But with this trade it's clear that management thinks that the time is now for the Pens. I would have back it up with another keeper though.

It's clear also that with all these moves, the Cup is going back to the West. DAL, and SJ have upgraded their roster significantly, ANA and DET will be in the mix but other than PIT who will really challenge any of those teams in the East?

I was surprised that the Habs did not get another goalie, puting all the pressure on C. Price. We'll see if it pays off for them.

COL should make a strong push for the playoffs now, they get the two D-men that I thought was missing in their lineup, I like the chemistry back in DEN.

I don't know about you guys, but it was a rather boring day for one of the biggest days of the NHL season. Blame it on the cap, blame it on the parity of the league, hey maybe GM's are getting much smarter than yesteryears.

Biggest loser: Toronto Maple Leafs. This franchise will have a long winding road ahead.

I'll miss Cookie in VAN. The Superpest will do just fine in WAS and I like the direction that they are heading. M. Pettinger is a younger version of Cooke with a more offensive upside although he's been struggling this year. Cookie is an UFA and with his rocky relation with A. Vigneault, D. Nonis felt that it was safer to go with a younger version of the pest role.

We needed another centre-man and/or wingman, but apparently the asking price was too high. The franchise is still a bit green in the farm department and it a way I am glad that Nonis didn't give up to the pressure.

Agreed. Although I must admit bias because the Oilers were major players on the last two deadline days, so today felt a lot more subdued to me since the Oil was dormant.

Teams that upgraded their rosters significantly were the Caps & Avs. Col will be back in the mix again but the most surprising move for me was that of C. Huet to WAS.

The biger names like C. Campbell and B. Richards will have an immediate impact on their new teams and the other names I thought would be involved today but nothing came out of it were O. Jokinen and P. Marleau.

LOL - Anybody who's watched McCabe this season could have predicted that.

I'm a little surprised at Montreal as well. Gainey's been really hot on Price, even going so far as pushing Carbonneau to play him in Montreal instead of leaving him in the AHL for another year.

And I'm glad they didn't give away a lot for Hossa. I don't think the Habs have much of a chance to win the cup this year so I'd like them to keep their powder dry and not give up too much young talent for a rental.

B.Stuart to Detroit for a pick and same with Aubin to Ducks a great move that last one, if they play him against Kings its a sure win for LA. Smart GM that, who is it Hextall?

I think Montreal came out the biggest losers of all the playoff contending teams. They gave up Huet so they can ride a rookie into the playoffs. Next, with all of the talk that Hossa will end up in Montreal, he ends up in Pittsburgh. Granted, I believe the price the Pens paid for Hossa was steep, and I don't blame Gainey for backing off. However, from everything we've read the past couple days, Hossa was a Hab.

Happy with what the Caps did. If they re-sign Huet, he takes over for Kolzig long term. LOVE Huet between the pipes, too.

Cooke for Pettinger is kind of a wash. Pettinger is having an AWFUL year, so it might be a change of scenario thing for Petts.

Fedorov is a deal that I think goes deeper than the final playoff spot this year. I think he can really add a lot of help to the young core we have, especially Semin, Bourque, Backstrom, Fleischmann, and Fehr. That is a TON of young forwards to mentor.

All in all, happy. We have a real look to the future view as of the past few years, and we are still a year or two away from making a serious run. That being said, I hope to see Huet here for a while.

I think they've got another really good young goaltender down in the AHL that they might bring up. I'm guessing that Huet was gone in the summer and maybe Gainey figured the price was too steep for Hossa, and he decided that with no Hossa he might as well trade Huet and get something in return.

I can't say I'm shocked that Belak got moved, because he hasn't exactly played much this season. I'm happy for him because he can at least get soms ice time now (hopefully). I sent him an email message today (he always responds) wishing him well on the move. Good ol' Wade.

The other two of the Leafs moves were nothing too groundbreaking for the Leafs themselves. I didn't think much would happen but I figured that one of the big contract guys with no trade clauses would go some where.

Then perhaps doing nothing would have been a better choice. Going to the playoffs with a rookie goaltender in hot bed crazy puck town like la belle province will be very difficult.

Gainey did well in not getting Hossa though for what they were asking.

They tried to move Kubina but he refused to waive his no trade clause.

I think it's a long road for the Leafs and will likely get worse before it gets better. They need to concentrate on the team's infrastructure because if they get that right (like the scouting) they stand a chance of being a top team for a long time. And with their resoures there is absolutely no excuse for them not to be. They should be like Detroit.
