I came in to post this exact thing myself. For the first time (ever, in any NBA2K game), I tried the career thing last night. I love these player modes in sports games, but know almost nothing about basketball so I never tried this one. Holy crap, this is easily the most fun I've had with any of these modes. I was up until 12:40 last night in my first experience. I figured I'd just play a game or something and go to bed, and that was at 10 PM. Instead, I played for almost 3 hours.

But now I'm eager to start over with a guy that I really actually put some planning into. I held my own in that showcase game, with 20+ points and 4 or 5 assists, but I still ended up going in the middle of the first round. The draft thing was amazing. I was laughing at myself, imagining what it must be like for these real athletes, because I was sitting on my couch going "REALLY? They pick that dude? I destroyed him in that showcase game!!!" and just watched as I slid down to pick 15 or 16. It was thoroughly enjoyable, and very immersive.

I can really see putting some time into this, and of course the next thought was "damn...I hope the EA exclusivity expires for NFL, so 2K can do this crap with a football game". It makes Madden's CCM stuff really seem silly and totally bare-bones.
I'm with you 100%.. I figured since I don't really watch the NBA much, this mode would immerse me.. and it has!

Love reading the twitter feeds too.. some of them are outright hilarious.

Enjoying MyCareer mode, but not as much as last years.

I can't see any way to sim games, so its going to take a big time investment. Last year you could advance to the next "Key game", so you could get through a season by actually playing about 1/3 to 1/4 of the games if you wanted.

I also don't see the Training Drills anymore. These were (some) fun minigames that earned VC to improve your player.

Why couldn't they use some voiceover during the cut scenes with your NBA teammates?

It looks like you will get the same cutscenes (which can't be skipped) and same results (ie teammate's game 3 injury gets you in the game) around the same time no matter what.

They should tone down the penalty you get to your game grade when the player you're defending makes a shot. Maybe since I'm an SG, I can really get hammered in tougher match ups. Then there's also picks and screens taking you off your man.

I was going to get this but heard lot if options from old gen are missing.

I may wait for a price drop but having all those old great teams is going to be hard to pass up.

One question about controls: did they leave in shooting with the r stick? I always felt this was a more natural motion mimicking shooting than pressing the button.

What options are missing from the old gen? Outside of the horrific menu change, it's basically the same game.

Path To Greatness (You control Lebron James' career)
Association was replaced by MyGM
Online Association (I think this is still in 360/PS3 versions) replaced with the old 2K league system (all teams must be user controlled, no franchise aspects). Online Association was my most played mode by far, hope it comes back for 2K15.

Oh okay. Never play anything outside of MyGM, MyPlayer and some NBA Today games. Association and MyGM are the same...just a different name. Not exactly missing.

So the online was working today and I was able to play NBA Today. But now it seems like the only rosters I have are current rosters with Kobe and Derrick Rose injured. Is there anyway to play with these guys?

I played MyCareer most of the night. Made a slashing SG and absolutely tore up the Rookie Showcase. Shut Jackson Ellis down completely (2 points on a bucket that went over my outstretched arms from about 18 feet, not much more I could do there), but other than that he didn't do squat. Think he ended with 9 points, but only those 2 points while I was on him.

Yet that clown still went 3rd overall and I went 4th to Charlotte. Talk about silly. I realize it's for their story purposes, but that's kinda crazy that I completely dominated the guy and a team would still take him over me when we play the same position with the same skill set. Oh well.

I was really getting into the season stuff, but I'm running into a problem--with a slashing player, I don't have the speed or ball handling to get around NBA players very well without turning the ball over, and my shooting skills are crap. So I'm having an issue where I can't knock down jumpers without raising my shooting, and I can't do that without the VC currency. I can't get that currency without playing better.

I'm stuck in a rut--I think I'm turning into a 1st round bust.

It is tough starting off as your player definitely sucks out of the gate. I have a similar player to yours although I'm a bit more of a shooter. Try adding the deadeye skill as that seemed to really help with the jump shots. Also grab the app for daily VC bonuses.

I don't even have a clue what either of those things are. Deadeye skill...is that separate from the short/med/3 point shooting?

Deadeye is one of the signature skills. You can find those in the menu where you upgrade your players stats (if I remember hit shoulder buttons to cycle through the different categories). I think Deadeye costs 1,000 VC.

By the app I mean there is a 2k14 smartphone app you can download which awards you VC credit once per day (typically around 1k).

It's kind of amazing to me that this game launched in this condition. You can't play it half the time because of server issues. Needing VC to change things in MyGM is just complete BS. If EA launched a game like this it would be a daily story... oh wait they did it's called BF4. :)

Seriously I don't know what 2K was thinking or why major sites are not skewering them for it. I'll not buy this game again next year of it requires online connection to play.

That's weird--I've played it the past 2 nights non stop and haven't had one "online" issue as far as disconnects or whatever. Sounds like I've been very lucky.

If you look at 2K twitter feed you would consider yourself very lucky. I don't think I've ever seen them get this much backlash. It's not my goto game so maybe when I decided to play I hit it at just the wrong time but last time I played I wanted to change my rotation (I think that is what it is called) in MyGM and it said that would cost me VC. Maybe I am doing something wrong but if I'm going to be micro transacted to make changes in a career mode then that is the end of sports gaming for me.

I realize I acquire VC while playing but it seems the rate would never keep up if you were playing MyGM and MyPlayer as you need VC for everything.

Again if I am doing something wrong please enlighten me.

Shouldn't need to use VC in MyGM...only in MyPlayer I believe. I manage my roster/rotations/etc. all day long in MyGm mode and it doesn't cost me anything.

Hmm. I'll try it again and see if I can reproduce what happened.

Just got the game and it's taking forever to install and update. Did anyone else have this problem? It says QUICK GAME is the only mode I can play right now and it's been stuck at 80 percent for a while.

There have been about 4 updates to fix their shitty server issues so I think its normal.

Quick Impressions :

+'s
-Unreal Graphics
-Great Presentation
-Tons of teams, NBA Classics and some Euro Leagues.

Minus'
-Gameplay is a bit stale like previous gen.
-Menu's are Horrid. Why did they change it from the previous years.

My kids love it, but I'm ok with it. if you're a big NBA fan you are better off with X360/PS3 versions which are around 40 bucks now. This game makes me wish 2K can make a NCAA for next gen.

Presentation is better than any other game I've played. I wish NHL had this type of presentation. I get so pumped up to play a game just on presentation alone.

Is there a way to play with Classic teams in My GM? I know you could on previous versions but I can't figure how to on the new gen version.

Had some friends over last night for New Year's Eve. A friend of mine who hasn't has a video game system since the Xbox played NBA 2K14 and couldn't get over how incredible it looked and played. He said he's seriously considering picking up a PS4 this weekend. I told him yeah...if you can find one!
