Rented PES 2011 and I'm actually quite impressed. I like the fact that you can't just control the ball no matter how hard the ball was kicked or how off balance you are. The ball just seems more random and loose for lack of a better term. I also LOVE the new camera dynamic. It just makes everything seem a lot smoother and organic if that makes sense. I'm not sure which game I'm going to stick with, but so far, so good with PES 11...I guess I just have to see which annoyances are more annoying and then go with the opposite game.

Well said, DB. Do you have PS3 or 360? If 360, what is your GT?

Fifa 11 just feels like driving a tank to me after playing PES11. PES just feels more organic to me and there is just something about getting to a loose ball outside the box and hammering it when you get the chance....Fifa just doesn't have that feel. It's all about gameplay to me and PES just has that.

Yep I love the freedom in PES as well - having a blast with the game even though I'm third from bottom of division 2 in ML. Funny thing is I think I actually enjoy playing the fictional league more than the real league with my wonderful band of losers. Actually I don't think they're quite as inept in this edition as they have been in the past - just keep Ivarov away from net and make sure Stein is glued to the bench :D

I'm actually on a miraculous run in the Cup having followed up knocking out AC Milan by triumphing 2-1 on aggregate vs Chievo Verona. That brings me a quarterfinal date with Juventus which will likely be a Cup Tie Too Far.

Best wishes,

Doug

More good news on the online front. I played a number of enjoyable games online last night with minimal performance issues and some magnificent goals! At times there appeared to be a minimal button press lag, similar to last years OTP from Fifa, but it was for the most part silky smooth. I also created a "community" and all games played within the community between community members apparently are logged and I believe some stats are kept. The real fun came at the end of the night when we played a Legends game using our Become a Legend players.. We were on the same team playing against AI. In this world of FIFA's OTP, this seems trivial, however, i've always found playing co-op against the AI offline to be a blast, this was a welcome game mode. Does anyone know if we can do this in Fifa 11?

In this year's FIFA, within a club you can play a practice game and team up against the AI. We've never done that yet, as it just doesn't seem to have much appeal compared to playing against another team and advancing the club.

However, i imagine i would enjoy such a mode in Pro Evo. I always enjoyed local co-op in past pro evos. They have had it online in the game for at least one year prior to this, but I never got a chance to try it out. One problem I have is that I'd much rather play my ML instead of trying to level my be a pro. Online co-op with real teams would maybe be more compelling even though all I do in FIFA is be a pro games online.

At some point I'm sure I'll pick up this game but i got the last one on PS3 mostly because of the better D-pad and the 8-direction movement the game is based on. Have they gone away from the 8-direction movement with this iteration? I thought I read something about that somewhere a long time ago.

Zep - interesting.. I didn't know this was possible within Fifa. Thanks for that heads up. I believe you can also use real players in the PES mode. I think I remember having the option last night of choosing between my BAL player or using real player.. i'll have to look into that.

I've always enjoyed Co-op offline.. It's a whole new challenge and has a crack like additive quality to it.

Zep / others... Anyone know what the minimal number of players is for club practice? I know that in the past we needed three to play OTP.

That is correct, Rod.

Sorry, Doug, I seem to have a version of the game that doesn't offer online play. :)

I'm trading in FIFA 11 on PES 11 next week. FIFA is good.. but after playing 10 so much, it feels much of the same to me.

Same reason I didn't buy FIFA 11, NHL 11. After Madden 11 I realized it's better to skip a year.

NHL 11 definitely feels different to me.. love all the additions.. nothing much feels that different in FIFA.

I can't decide if the players are too small in PES or they are too big in Fifa...there's a significant difference in space available on the field. The PES field feels gigant when I switch back and forth between the games. I still can't decide which one I like better. Both are awesome really.

I think part of it is the different camera angle but yep the lack of space in FIFA compared to PES has been something that has struck me as well. They posted a comparison over at Evo-Web and there actually wasn't that much difference in the player size relative to the pitch (surprisingly).

Yeah I messed with the camera angles and it helped a little bit but I still think the space is a little more realistic in PES...it's not quite as noticeable when you switch from the default cameras.

Did all the tricks change? Finally got to play last night on the PC and none of my moves work anymore. Passing is great, but something I have to get used to it.

I don't have a problem with that. The MLS had so many Latino players already.

I think it's very unlikely. The travel would be absurd, the timing of the tournament probably isn't very good for MLS teams, and with the lack of depth mandated by the rules of the league, MLS teams already have trouble putting competitive teams into the CONCACAF Champions League and the MLS vs MFL Superliga games. There would be little point for teams to join the competition only to field rookies and watch them get humiliated. Remember, MLS doesn't even have reserve squads or any kind of reserve league at this point. The squad limitations are very severe in MLS.
