It's interesting but as much as I loved Fifa....it just doesn't compare to PES in my eyes. I find PES much better and more importantly just more fun for me. It's on par with NHL 08 in my book.

I'm curious, what do you find much better about PES. To me Fifa just feels a bit more like real soccer. Let's call it sim. I love the controls of PES. Particularly the ability to run onto the ball when receiving a pass. That being said I don't like that lofted through ball on PES as it seems to simply fall out of the sky no matter how much power you put into it. Both games have their strengths and I will give PES the nod for offline fun... (and in my case, frustration as well)

As a former WE hound, i'm finding it really hard to adjust back to this game. For me I believe the pace of the game pushes me out of my comfort zone and forces me to play a style of footy that does not come naturally.

Too bad we can't blend the strengths of both games into one title.

Speaking of the Fifa Euro game. Why is it being released a month later here than in the Europe? Anybody know?

Ready to give up on this one in (online) multiplayer --> played another 3 games last night and I might as well have been using dial-up, absolutely horrid with the ball disappearing and lots of missed frames of animations. I was wondering if it was my connection so I fired up FIFA....and played a smooth lag-free match against someone from England. That said, I immediately missed the movement and midfield play that you find in WE.

In single-player I think PES 08 is better than FIFA 08 but then again you only have the same old Master League, rosters that aren't up to date, 15 stadiums and even the core gameplay isn't as solid as previous versions. Once you get used to the new engine you'll start pumelling the CPU like nobody's business because the balance of the game engine is tilted far towards offence.

Online wise there's no doubt that Fifa is more attractive by miles. I do prefer the way you build up plays with PES and the thru ball works better than their counterpart. Still the pace of the game goes to Fifa 08.

Agreed as well...Pace goes to Fifa but in PES, I just feel like I'm able to control more on the field. Sure, the speed can get frantic at times, but I like the predictability of it all. When I want a player to move, he does it. If I'm thinking about sending a through ball in, my teammate usually goes on the current run. Is the game super realistic? Probably not so much in many areas. But in the end, it plays a responsive, nice flowing game of football with lots of beautiful goals and a a different feel to each game.

It takes about 8 seconds to update the rosters...and then they are accurate as of yesterday. So that's a silly excuse.

If you're talking about the PS3- how exactly do I go about updating the rosters?

What would help Fifa is while the general pace is good the change of pace is so slight, they could make the sprint look a little quicker, would go a long way to helping that game.

I just picked up the Wii version of PES 2008. It's a very cool and different way of playing football. I thought it would be a royal pain in the ass learning all the basic moves and what not but it's very, very intuitive. Plus Konami has included a solid tutorial on how to execute basic, intermediate and complex moves.

The best way to describe the Wii version is to say it's like playing it in god mode. You tell your players where to be and what to do. Everything else is done automatically. For instance if your player is in front of the net he will decide based on his skills whether to perform a header or kick it in the net and also angles and speed of the shots are also done calculated for you as well.

All in all i'm very impressed with it so far. Let me know if you guys have any questions. :)

Great news...thanks for the impressions. I was all set to pick this one up at launch but then caved and got the PS3 version last week. I'm going to rent it first to see how it plays.

I've gotten the feeling from watching various videos that the CPU defensive pressure it a little softer, allowing you to really map out your runs, passes, etc...Is this the case? I would hate to feel like I had only a split second to line up what should be a simple pass.

As well, how do your offensive players perform 1 on 1? Is this part of the game lost because of the focus on the new passing system?

Thanks!

Well to answer your first question, is yes but then again i'm playing it on the beginner level. So they do play a little soft until you ramp up the difficulty.

The players perform very well 1-1 given that this is running on the PS2 engine. Also keep in mind that if you select manual passing which is what I have done it's up to you do move your player with the ball into space and find an open teammate. As far as having a set player initiate an off the ball run into space you have to perform that as well as a give and go.

I'm playing a friendly and I scored a goal fairly quickly but don't be fooled because i'm playing the game on easy so as to get a feel for it and playing it online is an all together different animal.

I too am finding the wii version a totally different experience. As Rodster said, it's kind of like a god mode. I've played 3 matches on easy and won them all handily. There is not much of a challenge there. Once I realized that you can control the player with the ball with the thumbstick as well, making things happen off the ball became a lot easier. It's great to be able to tell your team what to do, when and where to make a run etc...

I've not yet moved the wii down to my gaming room so i'm looking at it on a standard def tv and it looks pretty poor compared to the next gen games.

All that being said after years of playing footy the same way this is going to be an interesting experience..

Rod,, see you online.

I picked up the Wii version at Gamestop after work yesterday. I've only had the time to put about an hour or so into it, but so far it rocks. The controls take a bit of getting used to at first, but that is understandable after playing with a control pad for so long. Thankfully the training mode is very well done. Also, the manual is freaking huge and includes many, many moves that you can perform in game. Seriously, the manual has a wealth of moves listed, some of which I had no idea that you could pull off. For anyone who has this game, read the manual, and you will see just how indepth this control setup is.

With that said, there is definitely more freedom within the game which is a breath of fresh air. You can pick absolutely anywhere on the field to pass to, send multiple players on a variety of runs (and directions), and set up really neat plays on set pieces. The camera is pulled back farther than the other versions in order to see more of the field so that these type of plays are possible.

On the defensive side, I've seen where people have said that you cannot control an individual defender. That is not the case. All you have to do is click on a defender, hold A, and drag him any which way you like. So yes, you can have control over an individual defender as well as have control over your entire defense (zoning, man marking on the fly, etc.).

The crowd chants/reactions and commentary are actually fairly well done (they've changed commentators from the previous versions). The menus and menu music is actually very nice for the first time in a PES game. The music is different from the other PES versions. Shooting is responsive, the framerate is absolutely solid (sorry 360/PS3!), the ball physics are spot on, and the animations are superb. The only area that it lacks in compared to the other next-gen versions is the edit mode. However, there are many, many liscensed teams in here (excluding the EPL, of course). And since the camera is pulled back so far, it doesn't really matter that a few of the kits are unliscensed because you wouldn't be able to see the emblems anyways.

This is the deepest and best sports game for the Wii. Kudos to Konami for a job well done.

The biggest thing that strikes me about the Wii version.. All these years of console footy games and we could never really put the ball wherever we wanted... until now. The sheer amount of control that you have on the pitch opens up a whole new footy experience. The game started off feeling very odd to me.. but the more I play and better understand the controls, the more comfortable the game is starting to feel.

If you have the Wii version, read the manual. Seriously, it contains a wealth of information that the tutorial mode may not cover. The various passing combinations are very interesting. You can pass to someone and have your passer move to the point that you previously pointing to, which can open up other passing lanes. It may sound confusing, but this control scheme really does provide the possibility of so many strategies and tactics. You can also shift your team to the right or left side of the field and make your teammates more attack oriented or defensive oriented by using the Dpad on the remote on the fly, FYI.

For the 360, you need the Datel Transfer Kit (all of 15 bucks) and then just find the file you want on the forums:

http://www.pesgaming.com/forumdisplay.php?f=267

I've updated the PSP, the PC and PS3 version of the game...I don't have the 360 but there are a ton of people on that site who have.

db,
Well if I have to buy something else to update rosters (while in FIFA I just log into Xbox Live) I think it is a valid criticism of the game to say the rosters aren't up to date.

10spro,

No I still have the PS3 version...yes, despite the fact that this is my least favourite WE game in years I've bought 3 copies of it (PAL PS3, PAL PS2 and NTSC Xbox 360), lol.

EDIT: Best version is the PS2 one, IMO.
