I am lost. Where does the 100 bucks come in? Is that old price vs new price? I was just looking at apple.com considering getting one and was just looking for the sweet spot.
Previous MacBooks were $1099, $1299 and $1499.

As of today, they are $999 (in the old white enclosure), $1299 and $1599, or $100 more.

Actually, at the higher price, the MacBook Pro at $1999 makes more sense, with bigger screen, keyboard, better GPU with dedicated VRAM, faster CPU, bigger disk, Cardbus, Firewire.

But of course, bigger and heavier and you have to draw the line on price somewhere.

But then you have some of us who prefer the 13.3 inch screen rather than the 15. I really wish they made a Pro at 13.3...I would have bought that for 2,000. As it stands, I'll spend 1600 and end up with a slower graphics processor. No biggie I guess.

Geez wasn't it you who said Mac OSX was a toy? I saw their new notebooks today and just lacks the bang for the buck. That's why I switched back to Windows, their products are way overpriced. :P

Yup...that's back when they could only emulate windows. Now they can run it natively...plus I need to learn the OS for supporting physicians at work, so it's now or never since I've been looking to replace my laptop here pretty soon. It'll never replace my Windows PC. It's just a laptop! LOL.

Alright at least you have a good reason. Still they're way too expensive. I could buy a decked out, fully loaded IBM ThinkPad for $1999. Btw 13.3" screen is way to small IMO.

You've clearly never used a laptop on a plane :)

I had to use a 14" Dell with my last employer and it was hell trying to use that thing sitting in coach.

Exactly. On a plane the 13 incher is way better. If I need desktop space I use my 24" on my main pc. If I was replacing my destop I definitely would go bigger tho.

Hell for size I'd get a Dell 9" NetPC. Those things are sweet. You can get them with either a Slim Windows XP or Linux. And it includes a SSD HDD. Their like around $400.

If you want an 8 or 16 GB hard drive that can barely run windows...sure, a 400 dollar netbook is ok.

Actually from what I read it's a modified version of Windows XP that's a couple hundred MB or something like that.

Cool video about the new mac book...

http://movies.apple.com/movies/us/apple ... 8-9cie.mov

anyone have any ideas when they will show up in places like bestbuy? When I get one I will likely get it from Amazon to avoid salestax, but I want to look at it first.

They are in Apple Stores today...but I was also in Best Buy tonight and they don't have em yet. Probably be a few weeks if I had to guess. Best Buy probably wants to sell through stock. But who knows.

Hey guys,

Well I've finally purchased my first apple product - a 120 GB ipod classic (silver).

I'm pretty stoked, and was wondering what type of case (if any) I need. It's going to be in my pocket for the most part but it might be getting knocked around in my bag sometimes.

Do I need one of those cases that has a folding cover? Or just something around the frame with a screen protector? Not sure how much roughing up these things can take - I know the screen is still scratchable plastic on this one unlike the itouch, iphone.

Get a case...you'll need it. The iPod screens scratch like crazy.

I'm getting a MacBook from the school district I work for on Wednesday. I have never used a Mac. Is there anything I should know going into the experience?

Nah, you being a teacher, it'll take you no time to get used to some of the keys and terms used differently by Apple. You'll enjoy iwork, iphoto, safari is fun for browsing.

Thanks db/Rodster...bought a clear case today. Just turned on the ipod for the first time about a minute ago - I know I'm a little late, but holy, this is one great toy. Very happy right now. :D

Still getting used to the Mac but it is a very cool device. I like Leopard. It seems very stable.

Db, is that thing "PC game-able" at this time? Have you bothered to even try it at all? Reports seem to be very good for recent games, but do you think it would hold up into the future? I'm nervous about the integrated video in any case, and especially because all accounts are that the next OS X will be very rough on the graphics processing.

I need a new laptop but I can't decide if the MacBook will hold up for the next three or four years. But then, with Apple, I try my best to never get the first version of any product, because the 2nd revision is always by far the biggest improvement, and then the rest are relatively minor tweaks. Maybe I can hold off until. . . when? When, January? March?

I'm not sure what you mean by "game-able" really. I just finished getting my XP bootcamp partition updated and ready to go...so now I'll start installing some games to let you know how it works out. If I can run Pro Evo 2009 and NBA 2k9 on it as well as some text sims (which I KNOW will work great), I'll be a happy camper. I bought the highest end "regular" MacBook...so 2.4ghz and 4gb of ram. They did the upgrade right there on the spot in the Apple store.

This thing DOES NOT have integrated video...it's a separate chip now. It's supposedly 5x better than the previous MacBooks. The reports about recent games are all true from what I've seen...but just like ANY laptop, how is it gonna hold up in 3-4 years...they just don't. It's that way with any computer really.

From what I hear, the main reason they went with dedicated graphics is because of Snow Leopard. That's the reason I went with the 4gb of ram as well...want to be sure I'm as future proofed as possible. Had the MacBook Pro come in a 13 inch variety i would have seriously thought about it...but alas, it doesn't, so here I am!

I think you'll only see incremental upgrades after the New Year.

They just switched not only to the GPU but the whole nVidia chipset.

Don't be surprised if the GPU remains the same for another year.

They will probably integrate things like bigger disks, slightly faster CPUs.

Usually when they change the form factor, they have fit and finish issues or say problems with the latch and so on.

Other things to look for would include how the new trackpad holds up, whether it has software issues like not waking from sleep or the multifinger gestures not working right, battery life/charging issues, etc.

Well Zeppo...I'm sad to say that I thought the gaming performance would be a "little" better than it is. At 1280x800 (native res of the new MacBook), I can play PES 2009 at the low detail level without a problem. It looks decent...so I can't complain too much.

As for NBA 2k9...I pretty much have to run it at 1024x768 or 800x600 with the details down a bit to get a smooth framerate. It's definitely not ideal. I'll have to install a few more 3d intensive games here soon to gauge the performance a bit more, but first impressions aren't outstanding.

Playing PES is very good though...so that'll do in a portable state. I've got my regular PC for gaming anyway. I just would have loved to be able to play some games on the new MacBook...and it looks like I will, albeit with a detail or resolution hit. If you plan on doing some gaming, I definitely recommend going with the MacBook Pro since it has two video cards (and the second one is even more powerful)...but you'll be at the mercy of a 15 inch screen which is too big for me for a laptop.
