I am still on the fence with the 360 version but from Zep's impressions it sounds like the online version has improved with no lagging which I experienced while playing the game in Europe. Not even a patch fixed the issue then. I think I'll wait for a few more comments, especially for the online games, then I'll decide if it's the PS2 or 360 version for me.
I'm assuming it works like WE10J, but the quick restart option is pretty money. You can't control who you pass to when you do it, but given how useless midfield free kicks are in WE, and how much the CPU likes to break up counters with cheap fouls, I found myself using quick restart on the vast majority of midfield fouls in WE10J.Zeppo wrote:I don't know what's up with the 'play on' function, but it's definitely different, likely for the better, and I haven't yet figured out how to use the 'quick restart' but it's in there. I don't know if it's in online games, but one would think it should be. Of course, it's Konami here, so . . . .
Really looking forward to this game, much publicized drawbacks and all.
Option files from the PS2 version of PES 6 have already been converted, and they work on WE 2007. But unfortunately the faces on a lot of the players are screwed up. I never heard of a problem like this happening with converted PES 4 or PES 5 Option files, so it's a real shame.
You can fix the faces by going into Edit mode and setting each player to default, but that's a pain in the ass even if you know exactly what every soccer player in the world looks like.

Turns out my wife bought this for me when she was at the mall yesterday. So much for all of my complaining...
Haven't even opened it yet, but my first impression is that Konami really needs to work on their graphic design/marketing staffs--I think this cover/backpage looks awful.
Zep, looking forward to hearing about your league. Someone has to be the Watford of the lowest division, right?

I have found a bit of a fix for the players faces. Below is link to a post that lists all the preset faces in the game (and their numbers in PES 6.) So now you can go to each of those players in Edit mode and set their appearance back to default. If you don't know what team they're on, a quick google or wiki search should do the trick.
Scroll down to where it says "Normal faces":

I only got to play 2 games on the 360 version, but my first impression is that I like it *much* better than the demo, a little better than WE9, and a lot better than FIFA 07 360.
I also played a handful of games on the PSP. I'm disappointed with the slowdown in the box with the wide camera. It is also much faster than last year. It is also way too easy to score on the normal skill level, which surprised me since I've always been a "3 star" player. I played a bit on professional this morning and it seemed better.
Does anyone know where I can find an option file for PSP?

Quite happy with the online games I played last night... smooth in every instance. I like the tweaks they've made, and the slower pace. The control switcheroo threw me initially, but I like the new setup better in theory, so I'll just get used to it. Definitely have to learn the touch on long passes and shooting all over again. They mess with this every year, and there's always the requisite period of cluelessness.
I'll be on tonight if anyone wants to give it a go. I've decided I need to play more just-for-fun pickup matches to offset the stress of Zeppo's league. When there are actual standings and record-keeping, I convince myself it's life or death! Whereas last night I was just having a good time with it.
The most frustrating part of procuring the game was walking into EB and seeing 25 copies (at least) on the shelf but not being allowed to buy one because I didn't have a pre-order. This was like an hour before closing. I asked when I would be able to pick one up pre-order-free and he said they might be getting more tomorrow... in which case I'm sure I would receive one of those copies that was just sitting there in the first place. So I just went around the corner to the mom-and-pop and picked it up tax-free. Why didn't I go there in the first place? Something to do with trade-ins and whatnot. But every time I go to EB they do something to remind me that this particular branch is the worst store in the world. And this whole pre-order thing is based on the myth they like to propogate that new games are going to be scarce. Which they almost never are.

I haven't seen any US version files yet. I don't know if the Euro version files would work, but it might be worth a shot. There are several different ones linked from http://www.evo-web.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=38410.
Option files are a bear to get working this year as they seem to be tied to a particular firmware version. At best you will get names and not much else, as kits edited in the PS2 don't transfer like they did last year.
If you can still run DevHook on your PSP, you should take a look at http://www.evo-web.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=38410 as this includes everything. HTH.
Played two games of the PS2 version last night. My brief impressions:
-I haven't played a PS2 game in awhile, man the graphics seem crappy. And that's just coming from an xbox.
-I wonder if PS2 and 360 versions are different. To me, the game seems FASTER than last year. I played on "Regular" difficulty (which I equated to the old three-stars) and it was easy. I was blowing by defenders using the turbo button. I have never seen that before in WE. Definitely need to bump up the difficulty. (I won both games: 4-0, Man U over Bolton, all four goals from Saha. 2-0, Real Madrid over Villareal, Robinho and Beckham scoring.)
-The game seems choppy to me and not as fluid as WE 9 (which I played on the xbox).
-ML seems pretty much the same with some new options regarding diffculty of the ML (in addition to gameplay difficulty) and transfer activity. (I think they had this in WE8?.)

My personal take is, definitely. The gameplay has been tweaked. The quick-restart is one of the new things, and everything about player interaction is different. The ball is a little different. The pitch is more uneven and more random, with the ball hopping and bouncing along once in a while. The slower pace makes a huge difference to me, and really changes the nature of dribbling/ taking on players. The turbo is now a much bigger-feeling difference in every way, again making taking on players very differentseanmac31 wrote:Again, I'm wondering if anyone can comment on whether it's worth upgrading from the BC Xbox version. I'm pretty happy with the combination of FIFA 07 and WE 9 as is.
Filling the screen in 720p, the graphics are much better than the Xbox version. The game isn't the best looking 360 game, but it's clearly better than any Xbox game. And being able to stream tunes or internet radio while playing and mix it with the game sounds is gigantic, at least to me. The little 360-ish things are almost worth it alone, at least to me.
ML and such may still be the same, but the gameplay is different, nudged forward just a bit the way it always is. This may not be the best of all possible WEs, but I think it's the best one yet. I imagine next years version might be a real breakthrough, but this one is a nice small step forward. I can't imagine this is a straight port of the PS2 engine.
EDIT: then again, i just noticed you say you are 'happy' with FIFA07. In that case, you might not want to bother.
Blub- I'm pretty sure the regular classic teams are in the game, but you have to beat some tourney or other to open them up, like I think if you beat the Int'l tourney with England, you get Classic England. There's the option in the ML menu to enable classic players or not. I wouldn't put it past Konami to add that check box but not have classic players at all, but I'm sure I read somewhere that those teams are in there.

You've never even played the full version of FIFA 07 according to your gamertag Zep. At least play the full version of a game before you rip on it.Zeppo wrote:EDIT: then again, i just noticed you say you are 'happy' with FIFA07. In that case, you might not want to bother.

I picked the 360 version up yesterday and was able to play 3 games last night. I mostly play Serie A or national teams so not being able to edit team names is not the end of the world to me since Serie A is licensed.
It definitely is a stripped down version of WE but that didn't stop me from really liking Madden 06 on the 360 so it won't stop me from really liking WE on the 360. The full version plays much better than the demo. Everything seems much smoother and the graphics are improved. I didn't really notice any of the slowdown mentioned earlier. I really like the pace of the game as it seems less frustrating to actually attack certain parts of the pitch (particularly the middle).
Overall if you truly put gameplay in front of extras and graphics there's no excuse not to get this game. If you can't overlook some of the omissions I don't know what to tell you, I guess you'll just have to miss out on a very good game.
I am a patient boy.
I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait.
My time is water down a drain.

The games are very similar. I have both of them and I went back and forth with them last night (with a bit of PES6 on the PC for comparison) and I definitely like how the PS2 version plays the best. There is just a smoothness to the game that isn't there on the PC or 360 version. The game is probably a tad bit slower on the PS2 as well. Don't get me wrong...it's not BAD on the 360...it's just not as fluid and smooth. The graphics are ass on the PS2 compared to the other two versions, but that's not why we play WE. You can definitely blow past defenders if you get a step on them, but that's how it should be when you have strikers that are faster than the defenders. The speed cheat that used to be there for defenders, seems like it has been toned down a bit...which results in you being able to blow past them on the 3*(or whatever it is called) level.jimd wrote:I wonder if PS2 and 360 versions are different. Once I get my rental copy from gamefly, I'll be able to post the PSP option file. They have a great system where you can load up the option file from the PS2 to the PSP with the system link. That's what I did last year and I'll do the same this year. Once I do it, I'll get that PSP option file to you guys if you haven't gotten one yet.Blublub wrote:I haven't seen any US version files yet. Thanks for getting my back. We can't all be inveterate soccer snobs.ScoopBrady wrote:You've never even played the full version of FIFA 07 according to your gamertag Zep. Anyway, I'm sure I'll end up picking WE up.
I'm not dissing it. Where was I dissing it? I didn't say 'FIFA is crap' or anything like that at all. All I meant was if one is happy with FIFA07, then it's very likely one would feel pissed off enough about the lack of features in WE07 to have a hard time enjoying the game.
I said you might not want to bother with WE07 if you are happy with FIFA07. If that's read as dissing FIFA07, well, that's how you read it. I guess I shouldn't have put in the quotes.
Personally, I never felt the urge to try FIFA because, having been burned so many times by the 'it's all new, it's really good this time, everything broken has been fixed this time' hype in the past, I was wary, and (shoe on the other foot here. . . ) the back-compat WE was good enough for me, so I didn't want to bother messing around with FIFA. By the same token, if FIFA is good enough for you, you probably shouldn't bother trying WE07, because it's easy to get pissed off at all the bad stuff and feel like you wasted $50, and that will probably get in the way of your enjoyment of the gameplay.
