360 HD-DVD

It's unclear at this point. Lot of firmware updates promised for various things on the "Insiders" threads at AVS.
There's also talk about increasing the spin rate 50% to get higher bitrates to match Blu-Ray.
Again, this may just be a gambit to pry loose one of the Blu-Ray-exclusive studios.
But if that doesn't happen, they may not bother to put it in the spec. At least that appears to have been the case with HD-DVD-45 TL (triple-layer).
Well if they obsolete all HD-DVD players sold thus far, maybe they rationalize it as not affecting that many people. In exchange, if they get another major studio or two, it leads to greater sales.

They get more and more each week, but you are right. That is why I want to get something that really showcases HD. I watched MI:3 preview on the 360 in HD (downloaded it from the Marketplace) and it was amazing...I really enjoyed the movie too. I might get that...who knows. I'll browse the selection at the time of purchase and see what strikes me....

Why would you want to buy it if HD-DVD is getting destroyed? I personally think HD-DVD will be fine...because, like Windows, MS loves it and they will eventually just start dropping HD-DVD drives in every PC that leaves Dell, Gateway, etc.10spro wrote:If you still don't own one, maybe this is the time to do so:

U read so much 'blu ray is kicking HD's ass' press, it was interesting to read this:
"Standalone HD DVD players have a bigger slice of the market than Blu-ray players. But when you count Sony's PlayStation 3 game console, which comes with a Blu-ray drive, there are more Blu-ray players in U.S. homes.
Rob Moore, president of Paramount Worldwide Distribution, said market data shows that people who own gaming consoles buy fewer movies than those who invest in a movie-only player."
I just wish either 1)one side wins (no preference who) or 2)dual format DVD players get real cheap real fast... what a mess.

Well Toshiba has basically been dumping players for under $300 for a couple of months now.
But perhaps it finally recognized that content is more important than hardware prices.
Still, at some stores, the combined sales of several Blu-Ray brands have been outselling Toshiba, because Toshiba is a second-tier brand to some buyers.
If it's true that Toshiba paid $150 million for this deal, that could set up a bidding war for Warners, which has had the biggest-selling HD movies so far.

No idea of their quality, but I think the cheapest one is $1,200 - yikes.10spro wrote:I was thinking of selling my HD and just use the PS3 until this. I guess I'll keep it a bit longer, anyone tried any of those hybrid machines yet (not sure if they' are out) where they're supposed to play both formats?

I think only LG has a player that plays both and is easily found at consumer electronic outlets, although it lacks the interactive portions found in HD-DVD discs (it retains the BD Java functionality for Blu-Disc).
Samsung has been threatening to release a player that does both with full interactivity and it looks like it may be out in US markets for Christmas of 2007. A link to a Gizmodo hands on:

They think it's better than the LG one already released. Then again, it's also listening for $1050 USD at the moment.

Lot of spinning going on.
Spielburg is reportedly a Blu-Ray fan and the only movie of his announced for either format is Close Encounters for Blu-Ray. Apparently, his preference vetoed any of his films from being included in the Paramount/Dreamworks Animation deal.
Or Toshiba/MS just didn't pay him off.
Michael Bay supposedly was vocal about his opposition to the deal. Obviously doesn't have the same clout as Spielburg because Transformers is one of the key titles.
The $150 million is suppose to be for 18 months.
