Ref's don't change their mind, so I'm not quite sure how this very over-rated individual felt that it was worth his while to run 30 yards to bend the ref's ear.

The sooner they institute the rugby rule that only the captain can approach the ref, the better.

Someone should have told him he's not playing for Chelsea because only Ashley Cole or John Terry can get away with that kind of thing. Actually, what happened against Spurs was a lot worse and all Cole got was a yellow for a red card offense and then "calm down Ashley or you're going to get sent off".

EDIT: Can I also say that Torres needs to dive more when he gets kicked, instead the idiot often stays up whereas players like Ronaldo roll on the floor like they've been shot and get the calls.

I may be missing the sarcasm but if not get real Macca your so biased. He flops more than a wet noodle.

Coles tackle didnt look worse at full speed but slowed down i agree it was terrible as was his behavior, Mascherano's at full speed looked bad and probly warrented a yellow although a little early in a game of that magnitude but for the refs sake a yellow is a yellow no matter who when or why.
Mascerano was either too wound up or couldnt handle such a big game and just wanted to get sent off he's a friggin' idiot and i hope doesnt get back on the field for a while. Benitez should have kicked him in the arse never mind show some 2 handed spanish affection.

Hey Jim,

All I can say is I disagree - look at the Reading match (both of them EDIT: actually, all 3 of them), that thug Bikey kicked the stuffing out of him and he didn't drop like many other players (incl. Gerrard) do.

As for the Mascherano sending off, after playing in a Copa America final and a CL final I don't think he had a problem with the big occasion - I think it had more to do with the fact that our best player (Torres) got fouled 3 times in around 10 seconds and then got a yellow card for complaining to the ref about being kicked! What he should have done is rolled on the floor for a good 20 seconds and screamed after the first foul instead of staying on his feet.

Anyway, Mascherano didn't race to Bennet, he jogged over - watch the clip again and then started complaining. Yes, it's a dumb move but I don't see how that's worse than what Chelsea do to refs every week when they surround him bitching about cards and it wasn't even half as bad as Ashley Cole's 2 minute hissy fit and refusing to face the referee when he had ALREADY GOT A YELLOW CARD - did he get a second yellow? No, just a "calm down". Where was Macherano's "calm down"? He was given a full 5 seconds from talking to Bennet before he was sent off. Ashley Cole gets to turn around, not face the ref, scream at him and he doesn't get another card.

Not to mention the number of times Rooney tells refs to f*** off to their face and doesn't get a thing. If it's Graham Poll he can tell him to f*** off 20 times and doesn't get sent off -(http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2005/may/0 ... ll.schools)

Whatever, we were the recipients of a dubious second yellow in the first leg against Inter so this evens things out. Besides, we were already 1-0 down in our annual loss at Old Trafford when Masch got sent off.

Good thing I'm not bitter. ;)

Mascherano told the ref at least 4 times on camera too f off and was told to hush by the ref. The referee was Bennet the players know his disceplinery record, Mascherano lost the plot simple as that , sprint, jog from the other side of the pitch does it matter when it is to have another go at the ref, that is Gerrards job.

Ill point out the flops from Torres next game and you point out the times he doesnt, i bet i win.

Saying Torres doesnt flop as much is not realy supporting an argument more like reinforcing it . He still flops way too much for a man of his size. Most do and i hate them all for doing it.
Saying someone doesnt do it as much doesnt count in my book.

A striker who does not flop is an idiot. It's the easiest cost/benefit analysis in sports. The odds of being booked are miniscule and the payoff is enormous.

Basic human behavior. If you want to change the behavior you have to change the incentives/disincentives. Until they do There Will Be Flops :)

On that we agree, but my point is not that what Mascherano did was RIGHT, I'm saying that we see worse week in and week out that don't get sent off.

I also think you misunderstand my Torres comment, I'm not saying it's a good thing that he doesn't flop that much - I'm not saying that because I think he stays on his feet more than others that he's a great guy and has wonderful moral fibre. Rather the opposite - I think he's an idiot, he should hit the deck like many other players and he'd win us more free kicks. Sure it's not very sporting but every team does it and you could see in the United match his reward for staying on his feet the first time he got fouled was to then get fouled 2 more times in the next 10 seconds and then get a yellow card for complaining.

I can think of another example against Boro at Anfield; he gets a breakaway, gets nicked from behind by (?) Wheater and instead of going down, getting a penalty and getting Boro down to 10 men he stumbles and rounds Schwartzer instead and scores. At least he scored, if he had of missed it would have been a completely blown play. If it was Joe Cole or Stevie Me they would have gone down like there was a sniper at the Anfield Road end....

Look at it objectively, Jimmy. There is a rule which is seldom properly enforced. The payoff of a dangerous FK or especially a PK is a potentially game-changing event. It's a no-brainer.

The only other disincentive is the traditional footballing ethos...which I submit, in the era of big money sports is as useful as the Chivalric code.

Looks like F. Capello will be investigated by the Italian authorities over match fixing when he was in Juventus.

Everyone knows there's only one MASSIVE club, and it ain't Newcastle. :D

Still, Squid must be breathing a sigh of relief that Wednesday aren't getting docked points for picking 6 loan players in their squad for the last game when the league limit is 5.

Only 4 played - points would have been deducted otherwise.

That was SUCH a FIFA 08 moment!! Crazy game. Kuyt for MOTM? Now I've seen everything!

2 good results for Liverpool. They snagged the away goal and they finally found a position for Dirk Kuyt...RB :)
