It's pretty bad when your teammates and organization don't back you up, as well as most of your fans. NHL players and fans are usually pretty quick to defend their own, but in this case you'd look like a moron to defend Cooke's elbow on Sunday. My guess is he's skating on very thin ice and will be traded or let go the next time something like this happens. It's almost like it's an instinct with this guy to give cheap shots. Really kind of bizarre.

Or maybe there have never been any real consequences?

At some point someone has to be the adult and say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. As we saw at the gm meetings, its NOT going to be the gms or corruption incorporated.

I'm sure that plays into it as well.

Big loss for Canucks as doctors confirmed that his eye injury is more serious than predicted. He's gone for the year including the playoffs. He's been a great guy in the PK unit, #2 faceoff guy in the league, quality guy, will be missed dearly. One of these days, everyone will wear a visor, one of these days...

The big key for me will be how do they deal with future incidents? Is this suspension just for show, or will they actually take incidents in the future just as seriously?

It was a thriller in Detroit as the Wings managed to erase a 4-0 deficit with the Cookeless Pens only to lose the game in a SO. This is the type of game that will bring people out of the couch, along the 'Nucks-Sharks game a couple of weeks ago that also went into a shootout, where emphasis is more on skills and speed and none of the crap that goes on these days in some arenas.

Back and forth chances, C. Jonhson had some incredible saves and Wings started rolling all their lines once Jimmy Howard was pulled out.

Good news for Pens fans. Crosby has been practicing on his own and only time will tell if he can get back in time for the playoffs.

Wow, didn't think the NHL had it in them. This suspension is just a first step though, and there's no guarantee a second step will be as strong. Still, you've got to start somewhere.
“The suspension is warranted because that’s exactly the kind of hit we’re trying to get out of the game. Head shots have no place in hockey. We’ve told Matt in no uncertain terms that this kind of action on the ice is unacceptable and cannot happen. Head shots must be dealt with severely, and the Pittsburgh Penguins support the NHL in sending this very strong message.”

It is a start ..but I am not believing that they are fully committed until I see it...They did just last week fail to commit to banning headshots as that would some how destroy hockey.
A five time offender isnt exactly the best test of strength. That will come the next time a 'star" tries to maim someone. Lets see if they treat it as seriously or with the full on milbury style "its part of hockey" spin machine.

Im glad they did it, it is a start and they do have to start somewhere. Just not holding my breath...

Alert---overly long post that only a few Flyers fans will care about...
A little while ago, Matt Carle made a comment about how every season has its ups and downs, and those momentum swings don't change in a day. The good news is that the Flyers seem to be crawling out of their lull, picking up 11 out of 14 possible points and notably playing with more passion the last two games.

The bad news is the goaltending. Surprise!! Who would've ever guessed entering the season with two career backups and a 22-year old rookie who went 9-22 in Russia last year might cause some problems??

I said in the past that I was looking for shutouts this season as a sign when a goalie is putting in extraordinary performances. Well, as of now, the Flyers are the only team in the league without a shutout this season. Because everyone is thinking it, only twice have teams won the cup without earning a shutout, both coming during the high-scoring 80s.

I keep wanting to support Bobrovsky, seeing his abilities, but too often he looks a little overwhelmed in there, reacts slowly and has bad stretches during games. My initial thoughts on him, that he gets 'small' on long shots and is uncomfortable with the puck in close and around the net, haven't changed since October.

Then there's Boucher. A vet who is capable of playing great for stretches of a few weeks, he still tends to get overactive in net and is prone to the bad goal. If I had to choose a goalie for the playoffs right now, Boucher would still be my guy, though it appears Laviolette has been leaning towards Bobrovsky. I also have to admit that Boucher's performance in the shootout last night was maybe the worst I have ever seen (it's miraculous that the Flyers entered the playoffs last year based on a shootout victory with Boucher in net on the last day of the season).

While the Flyers goalies flail, two other names have to be mentioned.
-Ray Emery just was just named one of the 3 stars of the week, winning two games and giving up one goal in each. I previously wrote he could have been a low-risk, high-reward gamble for the Flyers.
-Michael Leighton's stats seem to indicate that he is playing well in the AHL. He is 9-11 with a .921 save percentage (his teammate, Johan Backlund, is 8-15 with a .886 save percentage).

So should the Flyers recall Leighton now? I wouldn't rule it out, but it's not going to happen yet. Calling up Leighton would be an act of desperation and giving up on either Bobrovsky or Boucher. The Flyers will give them at least a few more starts, but then the question has to be asked, will it be too late to get Leighton into the team for the playoffs? Maybe.

I am under no delusions about Leighton being more than a journeyman goalie, but that doesn't mean he's not the best of the 3 poor options. What is certain right now, is that neither Boucher's nor Bobrovsky's current level of play is good enough to sustain a deep playoff run.

If Leighton comes back, I won't watch the games. Maybe he would do better than Bob or Boucher for a short period of time, but there's no way we can win the Cup with him in net, and I'd be happier if he never played for the Flyers again.

Woah. Tough words for a goalie that had 3 playoff SOs last year and had a 920 save percentage last year, not that I'm a great fan of him by any means.

Hope to avoid injury. Get points( at least one) and get tp the playoffs without anymore injuries.
I tried this before the last game ....and it didnt go so well.

For the Habs...No one act stupid and just play hockey as much as that offends the milburys of the world.

Hopefully get a point or two(the playoffs are FAR from a sure thing) but MUCH MORE IMPORTANTLY. No more injuries!!!

SJ/LA, Phi/Pit, Mon/Bos, NCAA tourney -- my plate is full tonight to be for sure. Great sports day! Even though the Bos/Mon GMs were talked to by the league about tonight's game it will still be interesting to see if anything transpires, especially with Recchi adding fuel to the fire.

Edit: 2

3-0 at end of first.

I dont get to watch that much nesn and Im glad I dont. Wow worthless . Milbury what a gutless c***. this piece of human waste is even more pathetic on this garbage network.

Do they always just make up stuff people say? or is that for my benefit?

Milbury really going off on the hit on Horton. Says it's worse than the one Chara did and called for a match penalty and a call to 911. Haha, he sure know how to fan the flames.

Not much of a showing by the Habs so far. Mainly taking dumb penalties and letting Boston practice its PP.
