Re: DSP Boxing thread. Ding! Ding!
Never saw that outcome in the tea leaves. I thought Marquez had a shot at a decision, but a detonating, one-punch knockout? No, sir.
I'm not sure I want to see a fifth fight in the series. Plus I think this outcome also should soften the demands for the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight that's never going to happen. There should be few questions about the outcome of that prospective bout, as Mayweather clearly is the best boxer on Earth this morning after last night's fourth Marquez-
I wouldn't mind seeing a Mayweather-Marquez II, as it appears JMM is more comfortable with the extra weight at welterweight than ever. But Mayweather still would win that fight.
Honestly, I'd rather see Money May stay at 154 and fight the likes of Trout, Canelo and possibly even Martinez than drop to 147. I think he has more competitive, entertaining bouts at junior middle than welter.

Enjoyed both cards HBO and Showtime had to offer last night. Also happy to see CBS jump back in the ring. Plenty of boxing on TV brings me joy. Merry Christmas to all the DSP fans of the Sweet Science.

Carolla's interview with Tyson was fascinating. I've read and seen tons of stories about Iron Mike, probably the most interesting, complex athlete of my 47 years. But Carolla still extracted new nuggets from Tyson.
Thanks again!

Re: DSP Boxing thread. Ding! Ding!
PK are you intrigued by the Mayweather v Guerrero fight? I was reading an article on ESPN that says Money really shouldn't be considered a LEGEND in that his desire to keep his undefeated record meant he usually fought fighters on the way down but never took on or rarely took on the very best fighter in their prime. Those were the attributes given to Macho Camacho who was known to fight the very best always in their prime.
Anyway here's the article as you are the Boxing aficionado around here. http://www.grantland.com/blog/the-trian ... mayweather
I'm intrigued to see how Money looks at 36 and after serving some jail time.

Money by wide unanimous decision. Guerrero is slower and less skilled, a bad combination against Mayweather.
There could be some good exchanges, as Money is getting a bit slower. So he's being forced to trade punches more often instead of relying on his quick feet and shoulder roll to evade shots.
Am I interested in this fight? Is Pope Francis Catholic? I'm having between five and 10 guys over tonight for a party to watch the bout.

Re: DSP Boxing thread. Ding! Ding!
Masterful performance tonight by Money May. But at what point does he start to lose box-office appeal because there's simply no one in the world who can beat him? Mayweather is FAR and and AWAY the best boxer in the world. No one is close.
A fight between Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez could challenge the 2007 bout between De La Hoya and Mayweather as the biggest pay-per-view in boxing history. DLH and Money May coaxed 2.5 million buys.
But Canelo has NO chance against Mayweather. He's too slow, too mechanical, too easy to hit. Plus I'm not sure De La Hoya wants to risk Canelo's unbeaten record this early in his career.
As much as I would like to see Brandon Rios fight Mayweather at 147, Money would KILL him with counterpunches and ring movement.
It's a chilling fact for boxing: Mayweather is unbeatable right now. Hopefully people still tune in, either to see his mastery in action or with the faint hope that he could lose. I hope fans are satisfied with the former, because the latter isn't happening any time soon.

Despite his talent I cannot stand Mayweather. I love the sport of boxing but when it comes to him, I cannot overlook what he's done outside of the ring. He got away with beating a women in Traverse City while we lived there. She was my son's yoga instructor. When Mayweather visited Dom's gym,Dom walked out. He was 12. Wise beyond his years. I'd rather play putt-putt than watch his fights.

PK, you were saying that it's too soon in Alvarez career to risk fighting Money. Golden Boy didn't listen to you.
I guess Mayweather is serious about just 6 more fights and he's gone.

Re: DSP Boxing thread. Ding! Ding!
Gennady Golovkin is the REAL DEAL, man. That was one of the most devastating body-punch knockouts I've ever seen tonight in his victory over Matthew Macklin.
GGG is a BEAST. He is the next superstar of boxing, especially since Canelo is going to lose to Mayweather. Golovkin has enough technique and boxing ability to please boxing aficionados, and he has the kind of rare, detonating power that causes even non-boxing fans to gasp when he connects.

Gotta love this quote

"[Martinez] is not going to come off a 14-month layoff and fight this animal," DiBella said.

PK what are your predictions for the Mayweather v Canelo bout? Everyone who has seen Money prepare for this fight says he's sharper than ever with only a 4 mos layoff.

Re: DSP Boxing thread. Ding! Ding!
Devotion to a body attack is the only strategy that could create an upset for Canelo.
Alvarez is one of the best body punchers in the sport. It's probably the only in-ring skill advantage he has over Mayweather in this fight. So he must use it, and use it often.
One of the biggest mistakes committed by nearly every Mayweather opponent is to try and counter to Mayweather's head. Money May, even at 36, still has quick feet, rapid head movement and that cute shoulder roll to dodge nearly all counter shots to the head.
But Mayweather will discover a world of new trouble if Canelo counters a straight right by Mayweather with a left hook to the body. That will hurt Mayweather because he's a smaller man -- he'll enter the ring around 15 pounds lighter than Canelo Saturday night -- and also because a body shot stops Mayweather's escape route with his feet.
The big question: Can Canelo land this punch quickly enough? Probably not. Mayweather has shown an incredible ability to adapt to foes' strategies within the span of one round.
Remember when Shane Mosley ROCKED Mayweather in the second round of their bout? Floyd looked in serious trouble. Then he returned to his corner, talked strategy changes with his father and never was troubled again for the rest of the fight.
Everyone talks about Mayweather's speed. Everyone talks about his defense. But the two most overlooked skills in this guy's toolbox are fitness and tactical nous.
Those skills will help Mayweather win a fairly wide decision. Probably 116-112 (eight rounds to four) or 117-111 (nine rounds to three).
The main undercard fight between Danny Garcia and Lucas Matthysse, for the undisputed 140-pound title, will be a CORKER. Better than the main.

Re: DSP Boxing thread. Ding! Ding!
I love Alvarez. Stepping up in weight and at age 36 will slow Pretty Boy Floyd down in terms of punching and moving speed. However, his ring intelligence and skills both offensively and defensively will allow him to adjust to the step up in weight with ease. Floyd' great counter punching skills should neutralize Canelo's power who must be aggressive in the early rounds. But if he goes overboard, his inexperience will end up costing him the bout. I think it'll be a close fight, but at the end of the day, and still undefeated champion of the world...

Re: DSP Boxing thread. Ding! Ding!
The weight issue could favor Mayweather.
Mayweather fought at 154 against Cotto less than 1.5 years ago, and that didn't seem to hurt him much. The weight could hurt Canelo more if he looks drained and dry because of a superhuman effort to make weight.
Remember, Alvarez weighs around 175 or 180 on the street when he's not in training. Floyd carries about 155 to 160. MUCH easier for him to make 152. Canelo's future resides at middleweight or even super middleweight.

Re: DSP Boxing thread. Ding! Ding!
The only thing I see defeating Floyd at this point is his worse opponent "Father Time". He's still too good to be beaten as PK said. But if "Father Time" can allow Canelo to pound the body then he has a chance. The more I read about Floyd the more i'm impressed with his skills. They say that Floyd is like a chameleon. What you see in 1 round might look totally different the next round and during the fight. He rarely fights the same and if a fighter happens to fight Floyd in a rematch his style will probably be different in that fight.
PK where do you rank Floyd? Is he the best ever? The only knock I have read about Floyd keeping him from being considered the all time great is his choice of opponents whereas Macho Camacho always fought the best.

Re: DSP Boxing thread. Ding! Ding!
Not even close. He's the best fighter of this generation. That's it. He's inside my all-time top 20, moving toward the top 10. But you can make the case that Mayweather isn't even the best defensive fighter of the last 30 years. Anyone who saw Pernell "Sweet Pea" Whitaker fight in the 1980s admired his defensive mastery.Rodster wrote:PK where do you rank Floyd? Is he the best ever? It probably will be a chilly day in hell before I put Floyd Mayweather in the same sentence as Ray Robinson, Joe Louis, Willie Pep, Muhammad Ali, Jack Johnson, Roberto Duran, Henry Armstrong, Jack Dempsey or Harry Greb. Robinson is pretty much to boxing what Jerry Rice is to wide receivers -- the GOAT. Anyone who has read about Robinson or seen him -- sadly, there's very little footage available from his peak years -- knows that he had even better footwork, movement and ring nous than Mayweather, and he also had far more power.
That said, Mayweather is far better than Camacho.

Re: DSP Boxing thread. Ding! Ding!
This post from BoxingForum.com shows the level of competition Robinson beat during his career. And remember, these guys fought every five or six weeks, not twice per year:
***
Sammy Angottx3-Robinson beat this HOF fighter at Lightweight, and Angott would become Lightweight champ 5 months after losing to Robinson. Less than 2 years later he would go on to beat the first man to beat the ATG Willie Pep. Very overlooked win. Robinson would beat Angott twice more at Welterweight.
Fritzie Zivicx2-Robinson would beat the HOF fighter Zivic twice in a row, Zivic was the Welterweight champ only three months before fighting Robinson(gaining the title from Henry Armstrong, losing it to Freddy Cochrane).
Marty Servox2-Robinson would beat him twice, the first time when he was 42-0-2. Servo would beat Cochrane to become the Welterweight champ a few years later.
Tony Motisi-top ten at welterweight
Jake LaMotta-Robinson would beat this HOF Middleweight 5 times, many times weighing in as a natural Weltweight or less compared to the much heavier LaMotta. Their first fight happened 9 years before Robinson beat LaMotta to claim the Middleweight crown.
Ian Jannazzox4-top ten at WW
Jackie Wilson-top five at WW
Ralph Zanelli-top ten at WW
Henry Armstrong-HOF, arguably #2 best ever p4p, multi weight class champ.
Tommy Bell-#1 contender at WW, Robinson finally wins the vacant WW title by beating Bell
Jimmy Doyle-top ten at WW
Jackie Wilson-top ten at WW
Bernard Docusen-top five at WW
Kid Gavilanx2-HOF, future WW champ, top ten at WW
George Costner-#2 at WW
Robert Villemainx2-#3 at MW, had wins over LaMotta and Kid Gavilan
Charley Fusari-top ten at WW
Bobo Olsenx4-HOF Middleweight, would go on to become Middleweight champ about 3 years after the first Robinson losses, Robinson would beat him again by decision during his MW title run, Robinson would KO him again after his first retirement to regain the Middleweight title in 1955
Jake LaMotta-listed again because Robinson won the MW title by stopping him
Randy Turpin-Avenging his loss to Turpin by KO, Robinson wins back the MW title from this HOF MW, Turpin rated #1 at MW
Rocky Graziano-Robinson KOed this HOF Middleweight in 3, Graziano was rated in the top ten but not prime
Rocky Castellani-Robinson would come out of retirement in 1955 and beat the #2 rated MW by decision(retiring after ahead on points but dying from heat exhaustion against HOF LHW Joey Maxim)
Gene Fullmer-Robinson would go 1-2-1 against this HOF MW, KOing him in their second bout. Gene Fullmer was champ and would go on to become MW champ again
Carmen Basilio-Robinson would avenge his earlier loss to the HOF former WW champ and regain the title
exhausting list, and I probably havent even named all his good wins either. 18 wins over HOF fighters from lightweight to middleweight

Re: DSP Boxing thread. Ding! Ding!
One more fact that affirms Robinson's spot atop the fistic pantheon: In addition to all of his incredible ring skills, Robinson was stopped only ONCE in 200 career fights.
Think about that: Ray Robinson fought in 200 career pro bouts and was stopped only once. Floyd Mayweather will enter the ring Saturday night for the 45th fight in his career.
I could care less if Mayweather retires with the zero next to his name. He still won't be the best. Hell, Marciano is the only heavyweight champion to retire with a perfect record, and he's not even in my top five heavies of all time. I put Ali, Louis, Frazier, Tunney, Johnson and Dempsey all ahead of Marciano.
