Yeah, for some reason I thought Noronen would be the goalie to be moved instead of Biron. Having said that, I think the nucks needed another D-men or two as the blue line is pretty thin because of injuries. Now that the domino effect is taking place, perhaps a big name is still yet to come by 18:00 EST.Sully wrote:Things are picking up...
Flyers acquire D Denis Gauthier from the Coyotes
Kings acquire Brent Sopel and Mark Parrish from the Islanders
Sens claim G Mike Morrison off waivers
Ducks acquire Jeff Friesen
Canucks acquire G Mika Noronen...Biron will stay put
Noronen for a 2nd round pick is OK, better than acquiring Theodore or Joseph for that matter, and he only makes over 600 K's. Roloson is a solid goalie but I still think the Oil gave too much for him. Especially as he becomes a free agent at the end of the season.
It'll be interesting to see how he plays in Carolina. Laviolette demands his players to contribute on both ends of the ice. Doug Weight isn't working out too well, and I think that, as well as the Cole injury, forced them to make this move.tjung0831 wrote:Recchi to Carolina....wow the Canes are stacked! I like them coming out of the East over Ottawa.
Weight has 0 goals and 1 assist in 10 games, and is a -6.

Weight's actually done ok. He's starting to get used to Laviolette's system.Sully wrote:It'll be interesting to see how he plays in Carolina. I think this is a great trade. We basically give up a 2nd rnd pick, a minor leaguer, and a guy that's been a healthy scratch for us the last few games for a proven winger.
Time will tell...

He went to Edmonton. Details still TBA as of 3:35 p.m. I'll wait to comment until I find out what the Oil gave up.Sudz wrote:anyone know what the bruins got for samsonov?
Samsonov could be a monster on that fast ice at Rexall, though ...

I was starting to worried about the Canucks without any D-men but D. Nonis acquired K. Carney and veteran E. Weinrich in the mix as the core group stays intact. Good moves without giving away too much.
Samsonov will thrive in the western conference but I imagine if Roloson cost a 1st rounder, then ditto for this guy and a player or 2 back the other way.

The Hurricanes have been picking up all of my favorite players in the last few weeks with Recchi and Weight. Might have to jump on the Carolina bandwagon as a former resident of NC. Weight's numbers look awful, but last night I thought he was one of their best forwards against the Flyers even though he again came away pointless.
As for the Flyer's deals, I was hoping they'd get Recchi back as they desperately need offense from the wings, but the Dimitrakos pickup seems about the right thing to do. Sounds like Gauthier will be a good shot in the arm too, but 2 second round picks sounds like a very high price for a pending UFA.

I have no problem with that, depending on who the junior player is.10spro wrote:Pk, M. Reasoner is going to BOS + a 2nd rounder and a junior player to be named later. All for Samsonov.
Reasoner is a fourth-line grinder. A gritty hustler, and I really like him. But he's not a first- or second-line player, and he's -12 this season. Plus he's returning to Boston, where he was a star with BC. That's a nice deal for Mah-ty.
I don't mind losing the draft picks for Roloson or Samsonov because most analysts have said this will be a weak draft year outside of the top few picks. Edmonton won't have one of those top few picks, and the organization still has some nice young depth.
There is one Oiler also headed to Boston as part of the deal that you didn't mention: Yan Stastny. He's a forward prospect who made his NHL debut last week after being recalled from the AHL. Looked decent but not amazing. He is the son of NHL great Peter Stastny, though!

But I am curious as to which junior the Oil gave up for Samsonov. That's the lynchpin in the deal in my mind. It better not have been Cogliano, Dubnyk, Pouliot or Schremp.
Take care,
PK

I'm no fan of his, but Pierre McGuire likes the Oil's deals. From tsn.ca:
>>>Pierre McGuire on the Sergei Samsonov trade - Imagine having Ales Hemsky coming down one side, Sergei Samsonov flying down the other and Ryan Smyth crashing the net up the middle. There's a lot of weaponry in Edmonton now. kevin Lowe added Dwayne Roloson in net and now Samsonov. They are going to be a scary team in the postseason.<<<
My only problem with Samsonov and Roloson is that they both could be rentals for the rest of this season and postseason. Samsonov makes $2.77 mil, and Roloson makes $1.6 mil. That's significantly more than Reasoner and Morrison were making, respectively.
Then again, it will be interesting to see what the Oil does with Peca after this season. He's making just a short curly one shy of $4 million and becomes a UFA after this season, I think.
Peca had an awful start but has played better since Jan. 1. Still, he's not doing much offensively, so I wonder if Lowe will want to pay him big bucks to stick around and kill penalties, take faceoffs and backcheck next season.
Take care,
PK

Stastny is not a junior player. He's 23 and was recalled last week from Iowa of the AHL. The deal is Reasoner, Stastny and a junior player.10spro wrote:Prospect Y. By the way the Oilers and Blues had a deal done for Dean McAmmond as well but the NHL nixed the deal. Not sure what the Oilers were going to give up.pk500 wrote:Stastny is not a junior player. Hell, the Oilers just signed Rem Murray last week, and now they wanted McAmmond? What is this, a 1990s Oilers revival?

another Oiler trade I will reserve judgement on, only because Samsonov probably will be a rental, but in today's age, maybe not......
I just want my boys to get out of the first round! Hell, being IN the playoffs would be good.

As an aside, the Sens got Morrison off waivers, so I may get to see him here in Ottawa this year.....

Yep, Gang, I owe an apology to 10s. The deal initially was reported as Reasoner, a second-rounder and a junior prospect. That's why I thought there was no way Stastny could be the junior.
But now the CP is reporting it as Reasoner, a second-rounder and a prospect, minus the "junior" tag. That prospect is Stastny.
And I just received this in Oilers' e-mail newsletter:
>>>The Edmonton Oilers have obtained left wing Sergei Samsonov from the Boston Bruins in exchange for Marty Reasoner, Yan Stastny and a second round draft choice in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.<<<
Sorry, boys! You were right.
Eager to see Rollie in goal for the Oil tonight and see Samsonov flying up the left wing hopefully by the weekend, as the Oil plays Saturday and Sunday.
As an aside, I don't think players will have nearly as much trouble adjusting to the grind of playing a game every other day in the playoffs. Hell, it seems like the entire regular season has been like that due to the Olympic break!
Take care,
PK
