Re: OT: Android Tablet Thread
Don't know why a reviewer would even state that "it's no ipad killer" when the Amazon CEO said he doesn't want his product to be compared to the ipad. The Fire was designed around the Amazon ecosystem so most expected it to be limited with what it will do unless it gets hacked.

Re: OT: Android Tablet Thread
It's clearly not an iPad killer. It's not meant to be either. It's a consumption device that gets people to buy stuff from amazon. Its perfect for that and they will sell a shitton of them (yes mine was shipped today lol) so its merely a compliment device. I am actually contemplating selling my iPad 2 to get another if it does what I need it to for 200 bucks. I'm finding I don't use my iPad as much as I thought I would so it seems excessive especially when I have a new MacBook 11" Air that does a ton more. But alas it is just my never ending journey to have every device at least once so that my opinions are from experience not just hype and heresay like most people.

DB was it you who said Amazon is going to release a 10" version of this next year?

Can almost guarantee with the amount of the 7" version they've sold so far they'd be dumb not to. There is also supposed to be a 8-9 inch as well.Rodster wrote:DB was it you who said Amazon is going to release a 10" version of this next year?

Re: OT: Android Tablet Thread
Well the Kindle Fire arrived today and wow...for 200 bucks, this thing is gonna sell like crazy. It's super polished and an outstanding value really. I can't believe they are selling these things for 200 bucks when the equivalent Galaxy Tab 7 is 400 almost. The community has already figured out how to sideload apps, so that means the Google Market is only a few days behind and it'll be a full fledged tablet (minus a few bells and whistles: camera, sd slot, gps, etc.). Pretty sure I'm going to pick up a second one and sell my iPad 2 at this point. I just don't need everything the iPad 2 does for me even though it's an outstanding device. I've got my MacBook air for couch use.
Plus, I can use the 500 bucks I sell it for to fund my Fire and my Galaxy Nexus purchase if the f'n thing ever comes out.

I'm curious to know, now that you've owned a 10", 9.7" and a 7" tablet if there is a downside to the 7" screen? And yeah Amazon has confirmed their sales not presales has far exceeded expectations. They are building several million more.
Does the Fire use e-ink?

Interested in your thoughts here DB. Obviously, I'm not selling my iPad2, but I am curious if there is room for a 7" Kindle Fire in my habits.dbdynsty25 wrote:Well the Kindle Fire arrived today and wow...for 200 bucks, this thing is gonna sell like crazy. There is no question (having played quickly with a Kindle Fire) that you give up a lot to get this gateway into Amazon services. The screen size, while great for reading, stinks for web browsing, magazines and email compared to the iPad. It also has no native Calendar, Contacts, and other basic Personal Management apps, nor the productivity (word/powerpoint, music creation, notes, drawing) that help to make the iPad more than just a content-consumption device. So I can say without question that it CAN'T replace my iPad2.
However, I like reading on the iPad, but would like a smaller hand-held reader. That tempts me toward an e-ink device, but for $100 more you can have the Fire which can do a lot more than a dedicated reader. I'm not sure how many of those things it can do are comparable to my iPad, but it's hard to justify even $100 on a regular reader compared to the Fire. I don't read outdoors that often, so any reader would likely be a bed-side device.
Curious if after a few days you decide whether there is room for both in your life (I have Macbook Airs as well, but a laptop is a different animal entirely for me)...
Thanks!

Sport:
It actually has a version of Open Office that you can use for documents...but you're completely right about the screen being too small for productivity stuff (web browsing particularly). It certainly won't replace an ipad for a lot of things, but, and it's a huge but...all of the google apps can be sideloaded to the device without issue whatsoever (Google Market coming soon). There is a native email/contacts so I'm not sure where you heard that (the BB Playbook doesn't have it, maybe that's where). So it basically can do everything the ipad can do minus the GPS/Camera stuff...just shrunk down.
As for the rest...we'll see. I'll give it the weekend and maybe I'll pick up a second Fire so I can't play myself instead of stealing my wifes. Then just return it, or sell the iPad next week. Hard to judge after only a night, but as far as e-readers go...it's pretty impressive.
Rod...7" is too small for a lot of things, as sport mentioned, web browsing is really limited, but still possible. And no, e-ink is for dedicated readers. This is IPS like the iPad.

Re: OT: Android Tablet Thread
They are not comparable. Completely different products. Any site that does a comparison and is serious about (like the above) is ridiculous.

According to the article: "Overall, though, there’s absolutely no comparison between the two."
But we all knew that.

I picked up a second one (you can just walk into best buy...they've got em) so that I can spend some quality time with it without the wife interfering. We'll see how it goes this weekend.
Re: OT: Android Tablet Thread
DB does the Kindle Fire from retail qualify for a free month of Amazon Prime? I know it does when bought directly from Amazon. I saw 12 of them at a local Target. I may get one tomorrow and cancel my Amazon order.

Re: OT: Android Tablet Thread
I am pretty sure it does because it notifies you when you sign in with your Amazon account. I haven't broke mine out yet, but my wife's did. Even thought I bought it with my personal account, not hers. Just deregistered my name and added hers...voila...amazon prime. Should work exactly the same.Rodster wrote:DB does the Kindle Fire from retail qualify for a free month of Amazon Prime? I know it does when bought directly from Amazon. I'm just giving Rodster some s*** since it seems like he buys just about everything that comes out.
