Crosby's injury could end up being a huge blessing in disguise for this Penguins team. Malkin has stepped up and is carrying the team right now, with 15 points in his last 5 games and now only 3 points back of Ovechkin for the NHL scoring lead. I'm wondering what the new lines will be when Crosby comes back, since Malkin and Sykora have incredible chemistry right now.

Malkin is playing lights out, but much of the Pens future success will ride on Ty Conklin, who seems to have sold his soul to the devil and is now leading the league in save percentage.

Any see the Zednik incident tonight? Clint Malarchuk all over again. I hear he went straight to surgery and is now stable. It's a good thing Zednik never went down and skated straight the bench while he was bleeding uncontrollably.

Strange timing too. Yesterday in the Flyers-Rangers game the linesman got a skate to the face in a very similar incident resulting in serious cuts to the face and a broken jaw. Gruesome stuff.

Dear God, that's horrible. I hope Zednik is OK.

Or wear kevlar neckguards. I'm going to do my best to avoid seeing that Zednik video; too scary.

Gagne suffered another concussion and he could be on the Lindros/Primeau path to early retirement:

I'm amazed that a manufacturer of football helmets, such as Riddell, isn't being commissioned by the NHL to introduce greater shock-absorbing materials and other technology into hockey helmets. If you've compared the inside of a hockey helmet to the inside of a football helmet, the cushioning in a hockey helmet is laughable.

What isn't laughable is that hockey players often have greater velocity during their collisions than football players.

The NHL also should ban all hits to the head, but that never will happen until Crosby or Ovechkin are sidelined for a long time due to concussion or have their career ended by a big hit to the head.

Take care,
PK

As James Mirtle said in his blog this morning, this image says it all about the gravity of the Zednik incident:

Image

Between this incident and the Kevin Everett injury in September, the trauma centers in Buffalo have a sterling track record at saving athletes' lives. This truly was a matter of life and death for Zednik.

Take care,
PK

A ghastly fact about Zednik's injury, from a report at ESPN.com:

>>>By the time he reached the hospital, Zednik needed five units (roughly five pints) of blood, a figure that suggests one-third of the blood in his body gushed from the wound before bleeding could be controlled.<<<

Good Lord. Thank God for the excellent emergency care. It saved Zednik's life.

Take care,
PK

Nice to see that the D.C. area is waking up to the Capitals:

The Caps are my favorite team to watch in the NHL right now, other than the Oil, of course!

Has to be my worst fear as a hockey parent and shivers go down my spine at the thought of it and in a pro enviroment if the player can still lose that much blood there is no way in hell at a kids game are we going to get that kinda response and even from a proffesional more than likely a dad with cpr training.
I dont even wanna think of it.
Dont post stuff like this it tugs at the heart strings.(yes i do have one)

As freaky as the cut showed on R. Zednik, who remembers the incident to C. Malarchuk who needed 300 stitches for his neck injury? That was also pretty bad with blood spilling all over the ice. There's a youtube video of the incident if you search for it, but watch it only if your stomach can handle it.

Good win for your Oils last night PK. I was really pulling for them, gotta close the gap in this tough division a bit. Those damn Flames have a habit of coming back late in the last minute lately and they stole two precious points in SJ.

Canucks face the Wild tomorrow and W. Mitchell may come back from his back injury. Oh Please do, I don't know how much longer this thin D can go any longer without four-five of it regulars while fighting for a playoff spot.

A very physical and entertaining game between the 'Nucks & Oils at the garage. The game ended the same way it started with both teams playing very physical and a few fights. EDM had a bit more momentum coming into this game as they won three out of four while VAN has been in a bit of a funk, and with all the injuries this season, they haven't been properly rewarded as of late.

I was impressed with EDM's fourth line of Glencross, Brozdiak and Stortini, especially the latter with his physical play creating most of the chances for their team, while VAN's checking line of Kesler and CO shutdown the Helsmky line, but in the end the Sedins' line was the difference. Unlikely combatans in the brouhaha at the end of the game were S. Gagner, M. Weaver, C. Glencross, and R. Kesler among others.

With so much at stake in the Western division, this game had a playoff atmosphere with both teams playing an emotional and hard game, can't wait for the next game when they face each other again. Two hard earned points, we'll take it.

The Oil's fourth line has had a ton of jump since MacT combined Glencross, Stortini and Brodziak. These guys play really well together, for some reason.

Very physical, entertaining game. It almost was as if two teams that had a reputation for being soft made a point from the opening draw to prove to each other that soft tag was a myth.

Take care,
PK

Very nice picture of Richard Zednik, his wife and the Buffalo surgeon who saved Zednik's life:

Zednik's wound area doesn't look as bad as I thought it would. Oh, and Zednik's wife is SMOKE.

Another good old time Hockey game this afternoon in the Habs-Flyers game just like the 'Nucks-Oils last night. Lots of hitting, fighting and scoring. Flyers are struggling ugly lately.

It was the lesser of the two devils, but it was nice to see the Ducks beat the Flames tonight. R. Getlaf made a great move to score his goal.

GM's meeting in Naples this week to discuss general NHL issues. I say start the damn wheeling and dealing...

Yeah, that Canucks/Oilers game looked pretty intense, at least from the highlights they showed on SportsCenter Sunday morning. They showed my guy Alex Burrows WHACK that Oiler across the shins with his stick, which led to that big fight at the end of the game.

But I'm sure that Oiler deserved it. :D
