I suppose the last game I played where Tom Brady threw 10 interceptions against my Bears in the Super Bowl led me to reconsider, lol.

I agree that the db AI is unrealistic, especially with defenders swarming to balls they can't see. But will dumbing down can the defense now lead to the offense being unstoppable?

There is always this imbalance in Madden gameplay, and it gets frustrating.
In a recent Madden producer blog, they said the upcoming patch (early November) fixes specific things, the DB acting on balls they can't see being one of the specific ones. Obviously it's a 'believe it when we see it' line, but it was mentioned specifically.

The gameplay just goes in cycles from year to year.

Bump and run used to be ridiculous and then they toned it down.

Now with hyper DB AI jumping or swatting passes, you can leave WRs singled up, play Cover 0 all game, and try to pressure the QB before the WRs can break away.

Sure with Moss and other elite WRs this can backfire.

The DB/WR interaction has never been realistic in Madden, going back to previous generations of consoles. There are few CBs who can play press all the time and not get burned in real life. In Madden, every DB, including the nickel backs, can crowd the LOS and they're not easily beaten off the line. It's a slow swim move animation that doesn't give you any separation.

This kills the risk/reward equation. Sure press takes away the short routes the it should result more often in WRs getting past the attempted bump and forcing the DB into trailing.

Oh and Cover 2 is still not right. One of the defenses used often in the NFL to take away the deep pass is the one that is vulnerable in this game, especially if the QB has time.

They need more than tweaks from year to year. Because they can only put a temporary bandage before these imbalances creep up again a couple of years later.

But we know they're not going to rebuild the whole thing.
