OT: Major League Baseball 2006 Season Discussion

Wow... a no-hitter tonight! Strangely enough, and with all of the talk of the longest gap between no-hitters, my friends and I had just started a pool for who would toss the next one. Needless to say, nobody won.

The Big Unit's perfect game against the Braves in 2004. I believe the last non-perfect no-hitter was thrown by Kevin Millwood when he was with the Phillies.10spro wrote:Great stuff, when was the last one? Two years ago or so?

Hey, it happens once every fifteen years...I sure hope you're enjoying it. I wouldn't want you to pass up this oppertunity...it may be a while before you get to gloat again.jLp vAkEr0 wrote:Mets sweep the DH vs the Braves and push them closer to elimination.
Too fun.
Magic number: 9
If the Mets can get their pitching squared away, they will be tough to beat...that said, their pitching is a disaster from top to bottom, so it doesn't look good.

Thanx. I am.dbdynsty25 wrote: I sure hope you're enjoying it. I wouldn't want you to pass up this oppertunity...
Mets future looks pretty damn bright. But you're right, I'm sure the Phillies and Marlins are going to be tough to beat next year in the East.dbdynsty25 wrote:it may be a while before you get to gloat again.
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ...... People have been saying the same thing for months, yet they keep winning. And the 4th best ERA in the league ain't too shaby. But I do see where your coming from.dbdynsty25 wrote:If the Mets can get their pitching squared away, they will be tough to beat...that said, their pitching is a disaster from top to bottom, so it doesn't look good.
I don't see the Mets being the favorites against any team in the AL in the WS. They don't have the dominating starting pitching to be picked to win it all, but they do have arguably the best bullpen in the league even after losing Duaner Sanchez. Who knows.
Doesn't matter what happens this year, this season has been a success and the start of a new era for the organization. Mets have young stars in place for years to come, and a great front office combined with the ability to spend some cash. You wan't to compare the current Mets organization with the previous ones, be my guest.
All I know is that the magic number is 9. That's all that matters today.

The magic number was met in June...so the countdown means nothing to Braves fans. When you win 6 games in a month, you've dug your grave already. The fact that people kept bringing up false hope with the wild card is just ridiculous to me. Congrats on a great Mets season. Eventually if you spend enough money...you'll be able to surpass the Braves and their ever shrinking payroll. Frankly, I was surprised it didn't happen right when Time Warner bought the Braves from Turner. I guess I got an extra 4 years for free.

Jose Reyes = Electric.
3 run inside the park HR and there wasn't even a play at the plate.

I'm seriously doubting it. I think Howard has it locked. I was nowhere near that thinking before, but now....

Ho hum, another game winning RBI for Pujols tonight (#24), a clutch walk-off 2 RBI double off Lidge with 2 outs in the 9th. The guy is as clutch as they come.
Albert is in the top 5 of every significant offensive statistic, while Howard's big draw is the HR and RBI totals, the "sexy" stats for casual fans. Albert has also struck out WAY less (156 vs 43), and is a much much better defender at 1B.
The East Coast biased media is all but handing the award to Howard, who's team might not even make the postseason, but I'd be shocked if the vote is not extremely close when it comes down to the actual people voting (and not stupid ESPN polls).

Well not so fast... since I last touted Pujos as the easy choice, Howard has gone on an insane run. He has now vaulted his average to .316 and is first in slugging, second in OPS and fourth in OBP. I still think Pujols is better but it's not like a few weeks ago when Pujols was comfortably ahead in the rate stats. Howard could easily finish number one in OPS, SLG, HR and RBI. That would be tough to ignore. Pujols would still have being a better defender and striking out a lot less, but if the Phillies make the playoffs he is probably going to get it.jondiehl wrote:Ho hum, another game winning RBI for Pujols tonight (#24), a clutch walk-off 2 RBI double off Lidge with 2 outs in the 9th. I agree. I think alot of the votes will hinge on that. The MVP race is all the talk around town on sports radio, with Pujols obviously, plus Howard being a local kid. Most of the national analysts that these talk shows get on are saying the same thing... Phillies in the playoffs and it makes it a close vote, Phillies miss the playoffs and it's Pujols in a landslide.Kazuya wrote:if the Phillies make the playoffs he is probably going to get it.

I doubt it would be a landslide either way, doesn't matter if the Phillies make it or not. Howard's numbers are just amazing and I don't think they will be overlooked.jondiehl wrote:Phillies in the playoffs and it makes it a close vote, Phillies miss the playoffs and it's Pujols in a landslide.Kazuya wrote:if the Phillies make the playoffs he is probably going to get it.
Was Carmona the short-lived closer who blew three games in a week?
And why the hell is ESPN and Fox subjecting us to National coverage for 3 straight days of Yankees-Red Sox? For f*cks sake, I'm so tired of the hype and attention for those two, especially when one team is fading fast (11.5 games back last time I checked).
