Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
What seemed to really excite them was the fairly creative engineering Microsoft did to squeeze so much extra out of the parts they used. I don't think Sony can match them by just matching up specs, I believe. I think Microsoft is finally gearing up for an arms race, and that is probably not financially wise for Sony. Microsoft can spend them into oblivion.
Of course, it's too late for the short term. But this is setting the stage for a long game.
Price will matter a lot. If this goes $500, it's not going to lure many former 360 owners back. Well, unless Crackdown 3 reveals as the mother of all beastly games, with the Scorpio version doing backflips over what the lowly XB1 version can do, then maybe they can get some of those customers back. The first Crackdown was a seminal moment in Xbox gaming, something that really drove XBL's popularity. Crackdown 2 blew, so this version needs to rekindle those old feelings of the original.
Even if it is $400, I think we suspect the Pro will go to $350. Then we will have two 4K consoles not doing huge numbers, and definitely not changing the landscape.
For me, it's all good. They HDMI In remains, which means it will still be the centerpiece of my entertainment center. But I'm in deep into the ecosystem. All of my XB1 games will move right over. I have the PS4 Slim now, but I don't see me upgrading it. It's pretty much a baseball playing console right now. When my wife finishes Zelda, I will pick up HZD. My console,le came with Uncharted 4, but I haven't even broken the seal on it yet. I should do that today. But I don't see me building up much of a library on the PS4. I can buy XB1 games knowing that come fall, they are going t o get a big upgrade.

Scorpio will be my holiday gift to me, probably along with a 4K TV.

Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
Scorpio may do 4k games about as well as X1 and PS4 did 1080p gaming, which means render below 1080p and upscale.
2019-2020 should see a nice jump, at least over 10 TFs, if either company chooses to launch new hardware then.
It's not clear what Microsoft's commitment to the console business is after Scorpio. They've made moves to bring Xbox games to the PC.

I'd be more excited about Scorpio if there were actual games I was excited about. For me, it's the Forza series and ..... that's pretty much it. I guess having the sports titles on a more powerful system would be nice, but how much better will they look?
EDIT: Maybe at E3, they will announce new exclusives that will peak my interest. Here's hoping!

Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
I'd be willing to bet games are going to look better but more importantly run better. Plus the 1080p crowd who hasn't jumped to the 4K market yet doesn't appear to be an afterthought. But let's assume you're right and they are slight better looking. Do I want to play Madden, NBA2K or RDR2 on a system that looks slightly better and will likely run the game much better? Bet your ass I do.sportdan30 wrote:I'd be more excited about Scorpio if there were actual games I was excited about. For me, it's the Forza series and ..... that's pretty much it. This is the comfort that comes without being console monogamous.
I'm not too concerned about launch games before it has even had an official launch announcement. Also IMO exclusives account for such a small part of the market now it hardly seems like a valid point.

Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
If it runs at 60FPS in 4K, the sports games will be NOTICEABLY better.
I can't stress how much better looking the PS4 version of something like Ghost Recon looks on the same TV. Just running in 4K.
Add to that a further-out camera that sports games inherently have, and you end up with no jaggies in player models, or individual blades of grass that you can make out? Wrinkles in jerseys? What about all that left over processing power for crowds or dynamic chants? The possibilities are literally endless.
The downside is it's really up to developers to use it, and in the case of EA, they'll drag their feet for a few years.

But it's perhaps the 900p third-party games (where base PS4 typically hits full 1080p) that will be more illuminating. Microsoft says that while the porting work will be more involved, these too should hit native 4K."

You can put together a PC which has about the same power GPU and a much faster CPU and they struggle with "native" 4k.Pete1210 wrote:The article today indicated native 4K.wco81 wrote:Scorpio may do 4k games about as well as X1 and PS4 did 1080p gaming, which means render below 1080p and upscale.

It depends on how MS defines "native 4k."
Games will look great but it may not be due to rendering all 4k resolution pixels.

I was kinda wondering this too. I play mostly the 3rd parties and I'm assuming they'll just develop for the lowest common denominator, which is the Pro and we may not see Scorpio's full potential.TCrouch wrote:The downside is it's really up to developers to use it, and in the case of EA, they'll drag their feet for a few years.

Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
I don't own a 4K TV. Hell, I don't even own a 1080p TV. I'm still rocking a 2009 Panasonic plasma at 720p. So while you guys are parsing tech specs like 14-year-olds trying to spot nipple slips on Instagram, I'm curious about the Scorpio for another reason: Xbox Live.
Live has been the main reason I've stayed with the Xbox ecosystem exclusively since 2002. The other reason is I far prefer the Xbox controller to the PS Dual Shock.
So I'm really keen to see how the extra power of Scorpio will be used to expand and improve XBL and also create an even better, more intuitive and smart user interface for the Scorpio and Live. I also want to see no lag and quicker load times due to the extra processing power.
The more immersive games and graphics will be lovely. But my main focus is on how Scorpio improves the speed and consistency of games and also how it improves Live and the overall user interface.

Well they're reportedly reserving 4 GB of the 12 GB of RAM for the OS.
So they can either make a smoot, responsive OS or load it up with features which make it slower than it otherwise would be.

Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
I read this, and the only question I have is still unanswered. I know the games I currently have will play on Scorpio. But, will there be games developed for Scorpio that will be unplayable on my XB1S? And if that's the case, one, I'll be pissed that I jumped in when I did, and two, the trade up incentive better be unbelievable. But if everything stays the same so far as I see it on my own tv, I won't care and will stand pat.

Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
You won't get shut out of anything for at least two years, I suspect. Further, Scorpio and XB1 are linked so that even multiplayer games will have everyone in one pool. It's more like a new iPad than a new console. The caveat is how publishers will begin to target their games. In the short term, they aren't going to give up the PS4 and XB1 base of players to make games that won't scale down. Depending on how sales of the Pro and Scorpio go, they may in the future.
In three years, Sony and Xbox will probably have newer iterations out, and the Scorpio will be cheaper, and still compatible with the new consoles. Look at it this way, when everyone jumped to the XB1 and you were left on the 360, you were kind of cutoff. From now on, that won't be the case. There will be even less reason to jump up to the fancy new console. You just have to decide when it is worth it to you. Someone playing ghost Recon on their Scorpio will be the same to you as if they were playing on an XB1.
But this is uncharted territory. We'll see how smooth it all goes. There is a chance that publishers will continue having games scale down to XB1 for many years, after multiple iterations are released. They amy start labeling games as Scorpio and above. My guess is that as long as there are plenty of gamers still on a system, the games will keep coming.

The lowest common denominator are the XB1 and PS4 aren't they? I can't imagine the Pro or XB1s have a larger base then the original consoles.Murph wrote:I was kinda wondering this too. Typical development is push the limits and scale back to make it playable, no idea why that would change in this case.

Thanks for the tip, Dan. Slitherine makes good games. I played the hell out of Commander: Europe at War on the PC about five years ago. GREAT grand strategy game.
