It sort of is an election year for the consoles, Sony and Microsoft are the two main parties fighting to win the new generation of consoles while Nintendo sits as the Independent party with some really good first party titles with no chance of winning the election.Teal wrote:I think a lot of false and overstated BS is being invented and trumped up over all this. Re: New Xbox AND PS4 Info/Rumors
The more I'm watching and reading about the improvements to XBL that have been revealed at E3, the more impressed i am. I never knew what Twitch was, but now I see - we really will be able to straight up "broadcast" any game session, super easily and in any game, because it's integrated into the console. Meaning at the very least, sports games leagues can easily have those big championship or playoff games watched by other league members, or while waiting in the Ice Dragons' locker room, we can watch the game the guys are playing. Also the new reputation system could be a massive salve to the problem of persistent greifers. It might not work as well as advertised, but it seems they are making serious strides in the right direction. And the multitasking matchmaking, where you can go off and do something else while you wait for your friends to show up, or for the matchmaking to get you into that exact match you've set the parameters for, or whatever. Meaning, gone will be the days of me sitting and waiting for a spot to open up in a Battlefield room where everyone is already in. I can go play some other game for a bit and then as soon as the spot is open, immediately swap over and jump right in. Or I can watch TV, if I decide to pass my cable box HDMI through, and then get the indication on screen and jump right over with ease.
I'm sure there will be a lot more information about other improvements to XBL, but as I've said before they do not seem to be sitting on their laurels when it comes to their online service. They do seem to be pushing to make it much better and to expand what it is quite broadly.

First of all I'd like to say to all whom that have posted in this thread, thank you for doing so. I've been vacationing and my better half got upset every time I looked liked I was trying to get online.
For those of you that have chosen the console of your choice(myself included), why? We know very little about each one, I know, there's info out there, but to be honest, I, nor my friends and family does not have either one yet, so to be honest, I know absolutely nothing. But I made my choice and it will be XBOXONE. Why? I'll tell you:
COST, no biggie, $500 is still cheaper than what the 60gb PS3 debuted at. Besides, there's still 5 months to go, and if I put away $80 a month, I'll be ok. Did anybody here purchase a 3DO at launch? I remember that monstrosity came with a $699 or $799 tag with awful games.
NO SHARING OF GAMES, still no problem. People don't bother me about my games, to tell the truth, I'm pretty anal about my toys/hobbies/possessions. I don't like to loan them out after one of my friends returned my game with the wrong game in the case. I treat my stuff with care and refuse to loan them out anymore.
NO RESALE/USED GAME TRADING, not an issue, other than sports games, I've kept all of the GTA'S, RE'S, other non sports games that I've brought over the years, too many to name.
ONLINE EXPERIENCE, the PS4 new environment may rival what the XBOX has to offer, but I'll have to see it to believe it.
CONTROLLER, every since I've had the S controller in my hand from the original XBOX, nothing has felt as good in my hands. The Sony controllers feel cheap compared to the way Ms controllers feel. The 360 controllers are great, and I replaced the original Sony controllers with wireless Nykos that comes pretty close to what the MS pads feel like.
24 HOUR CHECKIN, again, no big deal, I travel for a living, I don't care what the console is doing while I'm gone.
ALWAYS ON KINECT, seriously, if someone is watching me while I game, they'll probably decide its not worth the eye pain to see ddtrane game.
NO PHYSICAL MEDIA/DOWNLOAD ONLY, About time, what took so long? I buy codes to add MS Points, and codes for ITunes. As Teal spoke of earlier, it's nice not having to swap discs or something like that. I really enjoy IOS gaming just for that reason, changing games on the fly.
There you have it, my reason for preordering the XBOXONE, I know it's not the best way of looking at this generation, but that's the view through my eyes. I plan on getting a PS4 somewhere down the line, I'm not a baseball fan at all(baseball is dead to me), I do enjoy playing The Show every so often.
So next year I'm hoping to be playing NHL15 with the DSP Ice Dragons. Sorry for the long post and thanks for reading.

It would be pretty cool to watch an opponents game or previous game so we "scout" them, learn there tendencies and habits, or am I asking for too much? I'd just settle fr watching other matches in progress.Zeppo wrote:The more I'm watching and reading about the improvements to XBL that have been revealed at E3, the more impressed i am. Re: New Xbox AND PS4 Info/Rumors
The lengths Xbox fanboys will go to in spreading fud to try and make it seem like the PS4 and Xbox One will have the same restrictions on used games is hilarious. The PS4 has the same DRM as the PS3; and as such is far more consumer friendly than the brand new DRM system Microsoft has come up with for the Xbox One.Teal wrote:Well, I'M a gamer, as is the writer or the article, so I'm pretty sure you can't make that generalization. Further, what "gamers want" is going to tank the industry that gamers claim to love before long. It's been heading that way for some time. Make zero mistake about it, PS4's big "announcement" was a smoke filled PR stunt and little else. They will do the same thing without being up front about it, and use some technocrat language to try and make people believe they aren't seeing what they're seeing.

So, following up my own info:GameSeven wrote:Well, I'll just get this out here in case anyone missed it. More grist for the anti-XB1 mill:

The official statement now seems to be that banning wouldn't result in losing your paid games. Further, the question of what will happen when authentication servers are inevitably shutdown has been raised. While an answer was not forthcoming (nor promised in any short-term) I hope to hear some very clear end-of-life implications sooner rather than later.
Re: New Xbox AND PS4 Info/Rumors
So if you're a paying XBL member in good standing, you can play singleplayer games as long as you check in every 24 hours.
But if you get yourself banned from XBL, you can play your singleplayer games without checking in every 24 hours?
But if you get yourself banned from XBL, you can play your singleplayer games without checking in every 24 hours?
Re: New Xbox AND PS4 Info/Rumors
I think that's conflating two different issues. The official statement would seem to imply that you don't lose the rights to your content by being banned. I don't think that it should be implied that it eliminates the need for the 24-hour checkin.wco81 wrote:So if you're a paying XBL member in good standing, you can play singleplayer games as long as you check in every 24 hours.

Re: New Xbox AND PS4 Info/Rumors
I'm leaning towards PS4, but I'm more likely to hold off a while for a few reasons:
NCAA 14
GTAV
NHL 14
None of which will be on the new consoles at launch.

Re: New Xbox AND PS4 Info/Rumors
I have no idea what I am going to do -- in addition to the two consoles, I have getting a good PC for gaming as an option on the horizon -- but Microsoft is starting behind Sony for me. The simple question is do I want to pay $100 more for a system that is going to have a lot of the same games yet more DRM restrictions and requires a daily check in because I have to prove I didn't steal that game I paid $60 for? I might -- the stuff Zeppo posted about sports leagues would be awesome, and I do like some of the Kinect possibilities. At the same time, as someone who is going to be using a console primarily for gaming, will I get more out of being a an Xboner than a PS4er? That's what I'm not sure about.

+1
This is why I am keeping 360 around another year too. Also, I am trying to play more non-sports games and rediscovering all the great adventure games this generation I've ignored like Batman Arkham City, FC3, RDR, AC3, plus numerous others. Those games now sell around $20 so saves me a lot of money too!
Re: New Xbox AND PS4 Info/Rumors
Just to check, but does everyone realize that this "check-in" will be automatic? You don't have to turn on the xbox and then hit some "check-in" button once a day or it's going to ban you from your xbox. As soon as the xbox is turned on and is connected to Live it will do the check in the background. It may even do it in sleep mode as a tiny background task for all we know.Brando70 wrote:I have no idea what I am going to do -- in addition to the two consoles, I have getting a good PC for gaming as an option on the horizon -- but Microsoft is starting behind Sony for me. This is basically how Steam works. Every time you open the Steam application it's "checking in" by way of simply using the system. You can then put it into off-line mode if you'd like. You don't have to check-in every 24 hours but you aslo can't loan games or share them with family members the way XB1 will let you.
That being said, I think getting a new PC is a great idea. I just built a new rig a few months ago, the firs time in maybe 5 years (I did some upgrades now and then). It's hooked up to my TV. I'm playing everything on PC right now and I've haven't gamed this much in years. I've played a ton of games, a lot which i've gotten on sale from Steam. Since I built the rig in February I've played Far Cry 3, Xcom, Spec Ops: The Line, Bioshock: Infinite, a little bit of Just Cause 2, currently playing Skyrim which i've modded like crazy and looks a million times better than the console version, and I'll be moving on to Sleeping Dogs next.
If I had to chose a between the two consoles I'd probably go with XB1. I have more faith in Microsoft's ability to create an ever evolving and connected system. I think they are doing more to move gaming forward than Sony. I'm a huge fan of Steam and the XB1 is trying to emulate that model. I also much prefer the xbox controllers. I don't understand how Sony still insists on putting the left analog stick toward the bottom of the controller. It's not ergonomic.
I should also note that since I live with my GF i consider myself part of a dual income, no kids household. We both like to game and will likely own both systems at some point, if not on day one. The only reason I might wait is because none of the exclusives for either system look all that intriguing and my only known must have game for consoles is the NHL series and it won't be coming to either system for another year after release.

Exactly. Of all the things mentioned this is by far the one I just don't get why people care.LAking wrote: Just to check, but does everyone realize that this "check-in" will be automatic? Seriously who here has a console that is not connected to the internet?
When is the last time you had an internet outage that has lasted more than a few hours? Or better one you even noticed?
Who really lugs their Xbox to a relatives house or on vacation? Don't most people just entertain themselves with an iOS device or a handheld?
When is the last time you turned on your Xbox and didn't sign into Live automatically?
I hate the Kinnect integration and I'm not happy about the used games policies but this one I just don't get.

Bottom line is that this is an additional +X ways over last generation that you can be separated from your games, for no reason other then the DRM.Danimal wrote:Exactly. Servers hacked, you do go offline, etc...
My main concern is end of life for the system. All your games can become useless should MS decide to go the 'pull the plug' route, and then your system is a big expensive hunk of plastic. This question has been asked of MS and reps (Major Nelson, etc) and they side-step it all of the time. Do you trust MS to support legacy issues with old platforms? Anyone try to get XP support from them lately?
And to answer your last question, I turn on my xbox and play single player games all the time without logging in. Why bother waiting the extra time if what you are playing doesn't need the connection at all? My last few sessions of State of Decay were offline.
Re: New Xbox AND PS4 Info/Rumors
I forgot about server attacks. I remember when Ubisoft was attacked due to their always ON DRM, gamers were SOL. Also what does happen with an EOL system? You raised 2 good questions.webdanzer wrote:Bottom line is that this is an additional +X ways over last generation that you can be separated from your games, for no reason other then the DRM.

Extra time? Are you on dial up. It takes 10 seconds to connect to Live. My Xbox turns on and it auto connects. It's always on so if friends pop on and want to play something etc. So yeah those 10 extra seconds don't bother me that much.webdanzer wrote:Danimal wrote: And to answer your last question, I turn on my xbox and play single player games all the time without logging in. As for worrying about playing games 10 years from now when and if they pull the plug on the system its not much of a concern.
