Wow. 8O I heard them talk about a possible goal of the year on On The Fly last night, but I had to go to bed before they showed it.

Crosby could be out for a month with a high ankle sprain. I don't know who's more upset, Penguins' fans or Gary Bettman:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/h ... index.html

Bettman probably will order Colie Campbell to ban Paul Ranger, who hit Crosby from behind on the play in which he was hurt, for life. It would be part of the consistent justice that is such a hallmark of the NHL.

I was kind of surprised Crosby didn't make more of an effort to turn his body so he didn't go feet first into the boards. It seemed like there was enough time for him to do that, but I've only been ice skating once in my life so I may have no idea what I'm talking about.

Flyers keep rolling on the road! 5-3 win over the Islanders. Hartnell is really starting to heat up. 2nd hat trick in 9 days. I love his attitude. After last year's debacle, this year has been huge fun. 2nd place, 2 points behind the Pens and now Crosby is out for a while.

If you saw Hartnell's wife, you'd presume that he heated up a long time ago ... :) She is a beautiful girl.

Interesting post from the always-insightful James Mirtle about the record each NHL team needs to post down the stretch to reach the 95-point mark, which historically almost guarantees a playoff spot.

The Oil needs to go 23-9. Gulp.

Really :)

Hartnell gets another goal and the Fly Guys thump the Sens 6-1! This is so much more fun than looking like an AHL team and finishing last.

It's only the second period between PIT-WAS and the game 4-3 in favour of the Pens. It's one of those wide open games where the result can go to double digits. E. Malkin and A. Ovechkin are putting on a show. How could the Russian not be voted for the AS game?

M.Green. This guy reminds me a lot of the younger years of P. Coffey, very confident going to the attack and he 's got some great wheels.
Very entertaining game.

I would be surprised if I. Kovalchuck didn't get a call from B. Campbell after his cheap hit on M. Rozsival in NY. He's a skilled player but he clearly elevated his feet in nailing the NY D-man. I say minimum five.

Oh, joy -- three more years of Versus:

<<<<<

The NHL and Versus have agreed to extend their contract by three years, the cable network confirmed Tuesday.

Terms of the deal were not immediately available.

The network, formerly known as OLN, began televising NHL games during the 2005-06 season. It paid $65 million for the first year, $70 million for the second, and exercised a $72.5 million option for this season.

Ratings for NHL games on Versus are up this season. Through 29 games, average viewership has increased 34 percent from 195,666 to 261,760. Versus is airing 57 regular-season games this season.

S. Downie is a punk but I. Kovalchuk is not far behind after getting away with murder today with his dirty hit yesterday night and saying: 'I was just finishing my check'. Another sour excuse for a guy that has a lot of talent, but made the wrong decision. If you look carefully at the video, he's in full stride, elevates his feet and drives Rozsival to the boards heavily. The hit takes place also almost at the end of the 1st period, something was going on.

One game suspension only, what a joke.

I like almost everything Buccigross writes on the NHL. The guy has a distinctive style and a passion for hockey. This excerpt discussing the Pens/Caps game made me laugh.
Bucci wrote:Yes, Monday's game had it all. Ten goals, stars shining brightly, monstrous hits, blocked shots, a shootout and little balls of hate. The only thing better would have been if Georges Laraque and Donald Brashear got into a fight, knocked each other's heads off, and then, after sliding across the ice, the two heads started fighting.

Brian Leetch's # 2 was retired at MSG. They also announced that A. Graves will have his number in the rafters next season.

No one likes S. Downie but G. Laraque will be suspended for his hit from behind on the rookie. It was intentional.

What a night for Alfie in OTT, seven points night including a hat-trick.

The Rangers are really getting carried away with the number retirements, honestly. Before the rash of '94 Rangers seeing their silks hung in the rafters, Rod Gilbert and Eddie Giacomin were the only Rangers to have their numbers retired.

I have no quarrel with Messier. Richter is justified, considering his career in N.Y. was equal to, or better, than Giacomin's. Leetch was a stud.

But Adam Graves? Come on. I loved Gravy with the Oilers and respected him as a Ranger. But other than his 52-goal season in 1993-94, this guy was a power forward with some pop, a guy who was good for 40 to 70 points per year. A leader, yes.

Still not worthy of a number retirement, though.

You can make the argument that Brad Park was a much better and more dominant player with the Rangers than Graves. And what about "Bubba," Barry Beck? He was just as good at defense as Graves was at wing during his Rangers' tenure.

Finally, what about The Beezer? Jean Ratelle? Espo? Vic Hadfield? They're all just as worthy as Adam Graves.

Sadly, teams are using jersey retirement ceremonies as marketing tools more than tributes.

I shed zero tears. Georgie was teaching Mr. Downie a hopefully painful lesson about NHL justice. This isn't the OHL anymore, Stevie. I hope you're sore as f*ck for about the next week.

Also a sign of great leadership, taking on greater responsibility while Heatley is out. Ottawa still isn't going far in the playoffs, though, even when Heatley returns. The goaltending is too inconsistent.

And during the ceremony when they announced his name, he looked as surprised as anyone in the building. I don't think he expected it.

Stat of the day: Minnesota is 20-0 this season when entering the third period with the lead.

Not a huge shocker, considering Wild coach Jacques Lemaire is the biggest proponent of the neutral-zone trap in the NHL. And stats like this only will continue the plague of the trap in the league.

Ridiculous comment, pk. Laraque plays for the Penguins, not the Senators, who are the only NHL team who have any reason to seek justice against Downey. If an Ottawa goon had done that, I would say fair enough.

If you believe in karma then Downey has nothing to complain about. But that doesn't excuse what Laraque did, which was deliberately shove a defenseless player head first into the boards. Laraque got away with diving skates first into Biron in the last battle of PA, but I'm sure he won't be so lucky this time.

Only an Ottawa player can seek retribution on Downie? I'm sure many guys around the NHL secretly appreciate what Laraque did, just as I'm sure many would be happy to see Sean Avery or Jarko Ruutu get stapled.
Feanor wrote:If you believe in karma then Downey has nothing to complain about. But that doesn't excuse what Laraque did, which was deliberately shove a defenseless player head first into the boards.
Much like Downie launching himself into Dean McAmmond's head or punching Jason Blake in the face when Blake was tied up by a linesman?
Feanor wrote:Laraque got away with diving skates first into Biron in the last battle of PA, but I'm sure he won't be so lucky this time.
If you mean Laraque won't be so lucky because he'll be suspended, fine. If you mean Laraque won't be so lucky because a Flyer will take him down, that's funny. There's arguably no one in the NHL who can beat Laraque in a fight. Laraque only needed his arms to staple Downie -- can you imagine what he could do with his entire body?

Maybe Downie now will think twice before he does something stupid next time.

If Downie is truly tough, he'll challenge Laraque to drop the gloves the next time the Flyers play the Pens. If Downie does that, I'll respect him.

Take care,

I meant getting suspended. Laraque should have got at least a couple of games for what he did to Biron.

Many players around the league would also like to see Laraque go flying head first into the boards for some of the cowardly gooning he's done, but that doesn't mean it would have been justice if the situation last night had been reversed.

Laraque is a great fighter and a fair one; Riley Cote said this morning on the radio that Laraque helped him up when Cote slipped at the start of their fight last night rather than take advantage of it. But already this year Laraque has used his stick, skates and the boards to attempt to injure players on the Flyers. He's in no position to be the NHL's policeman.
