I'm ashamed to say it, but GCB is my guilty pleasure. Stupid, funny, and those bitches act like the housewives in my neighborhood
Re: The really great TV thread
Depends on the person, the program, and the TV set. In most cases, I'd agree, but I think Netflix streaming looks a little more grainy. Plus the occasional streaming hiccups are really annoying. For most shows, the difference is nothing special, but Mad Men really does look amazingly crisp on BR. I still get BR discs from Netflix specifically for shows like this along with movies.Aristo wrote:Yeah, I get that Blu-Ray looks better, but convenience trumps that everyday.

Was a little concerned if the show kept its momentum after the first season. You and Tjung have put my fears to rest. Thanks!pk500 wrote:To quote Bachman-Turner Overdrive, "you ain't seen nothin' yet."sportdan30 wrote:Almost though the first season of Breaking Bad and it's frickin' great.

Re: The really great TV thread
Actually the first season was shortened by the writers strike. So there were only like 6 or 8 episodes.
Season 2 is controversial.
There are many incredible confrontations to come over the next 3 seasons. But the signature one was when Walt walks into Tuco's office, demanding money from this gangster who's beat Jesse to a pulp, and then blows up the windows in the office and walks out with Jesse and the money. It's mild compared to what happens later but it was completely inventive and like nothing else on TV.

Fortunately saw that episode! I'm done with the first season now. I just love the main cast of characters. Walter Jr, Jessee and especially the brother in law DEA are great and I never know if I'm going to bust out laughing, shed a tear, or scream holy crap!

Yeah Hank's a great character.

My wife and I started watching Sons of Anarchy this weekend. Damn!! It's got the same addictive qualities of Breaking Bad. Can't stop watching....

Has anyone else watched the BBC's modern update of Sherlock? It's a very enjoyable rethinking of the traditional Holmes stories, especially the way Sherlock is portrayed as having borderline Asperger's.
Re: The really great TV thread
I watched the first season last week and the premiere on Sunday. Utterly awesome! Really inventive update, particularly the approach to visuals. Great sense of humor too.Brando70 wrote:Has anyone else watched the BBC's modern update of Sherlock? Heard good things about it but DirectTV doesn't have BBC America in HD so no go.

That's a bummer. BBCA is one of my favorite networks. Filled with good shows.wco81 wrote:Heard good things about it but DirectTV doesn't have BBC America in HD so no go.

It's being shown on PBS. I think the first series is on Netflix, too.wco81 wrote:Heard good things about it but DirectTV doesn't have BBC America in HD so no go.

Definitely worth tracking it down.

One of the guys from the British version of the Office plays Watson, I believe.
Re: The really great TV thread
Yeah, and he's awesome enough in it to never think of him as being from The Office again. But he played Tim, the equivalent of Jim in the US version.fsquid wrote:One of the guys from the British version of the Office plays Watson, I believe.
Anybody watching Person of Interest? It's been one of my favorite shows of the year. It's totally Batman withut a mask and cape. Jim Caviezel has been fantastic as an ex-spy turned vigilante, supported by a computer genius Harold Finch played by Michael Emerson (Ben from Lost). The entire series played out like a comic book story, with arch villains and special powers, but does it in real world setting, and absolutely no camp. It's been a really fun first season.
My wife still says, "Let's watch Batman!" when she sees it on the Tivo list. The key is, Caviezel has Batman's wit and dry sense of humor, along with a healthy sense of duty, and an unrelenting need to punish bad guys.

For the Battlestar Fans who like british TV, I've been watching OutCasts from the BBC. Pretty good but your typical BBC show.
The new Sherlock Holmes, for me, seems boring. I don't like Cumberbatch (that's his name) as Sherlock. I'll probably give it another try but found it lacking.

On PBS this week, American Masters has Johnny Carson documentary. I saw it last night, just awesome. 2 hrs of worth of a great entertainer. Narrated by Kevin Spacey.
One Note to ponder - Jay Leno is on there kissing Johnny's Ass. Same guy who helped him push him out the door. Leno is the only guy who would want to murder you but then right after the crime act like you were his best friend he would never hurt.

Re: The really great TV thread
Parks and Recreation was good, NBC keeping it on the air based on good critical reception more than ratings.
Girls on HBO is a more controversial show about 4 women in the big city. Along with Louie, shows based in NY without the glamor.

Re: The really great TV thread
I'm really digging "Veep," the new HBO show starring Julia-Louis Dreyfus. Very witty, clever, but a bit cruel. A bit of Aaron Sorkin, a bit of the BBC version of "The Office."
Funny!
