The delay of game penalties are annoying, but for some reason I never score on a 5-3. I suck so I am playing on Pro. I started a season post-patch and am averaging 3 and giving up 2.77 after 19 games. My record is 12-4-3, but it's only recently took off because I've won 6 of 7. We'll see if the challenge remains or if I need to bump up to All-Star. This is on PS3.
Seriously. do I just effing suck now, or can you ever score on a wrist shot? The only goals I get now are rebounds, pokechecking 100 times into the goalie, or one timers. I can deke the jock off everyone in the rink, but that goalie somehow reads the controller inputs, BEFORE i put them in.
Sorry, I'm not the best player ever, but going from 2-3 goals a game, down to 1 (or less) after the patch???
Yes, I set up plays. Yes, I vary my attack. I'm going to try upping accuracy to the max and see if that helps at all, else this is going to go back to EB and I'll find some other sports game to play, because I love hockey, but right now I despise NHL09.
(yes, I'm ranting like a little wuss!!!!)

I'm convinced the only way for me to really enjoy this game vs. the CPU is on default (9 minute periods). When I slow down the gameplay/pass speed then the scoring dries up. Increasing poke/hook effectiveness gives me more penalties, but less scoring as well. On default it doesn't play the most realistic hockey (even with slider tweaks it's not too realistic anyway with the tape-to-tape passing and lack of board play), but it's a lot of fun IMO. I played 4 games yesterday and I lost 5-3, won 6-1, lost 2-1, and won 4-3 in OT.Gangrel wrote:Seriously. do I just effing suck now, or can you ever score on a wrist shot? I'm not sure if it's the "sports game of the year", but it's certainly my favorite.
I completely agree with you Leebo, playing on AS defaults with 9 min periods and penalties turned all the way up and fighting half way, I'm having a blast!!!Leebo33 wrote:I'm convinced the only way for me to really enjoy this game vs. the CPU is on default (9 minute periods). I've been playing with defaults as well, only tweaking fatigue effect and recovery, and the penalty slider. However, my first few games were all still low scoring, 2-1, 1-0, along those lines. Then I upped the shot power slider to 4. My first game was 2-0 I think, and i just had a 4-3 Shootout win against LA.
ONe thing I think I noticed is that with the increase of shot power, the goalies just move that much more quickly to get the puck. I have managed a few blasts from the point with Souray into the net, but still.... somthing seems off. I think this may be the best I'm gonna get however, so I'll stick with these settings and see how long it is before I get mad.

I have been playing OTP mostly with this game, so I tried a few offline exhibitions and I can see where the rant is on goals. They all seem of the garbage variety, crashing the net, a lucky bounce here and there, etc. I'd like to see superstars like AO, SC score more frequently on wristers, one timers because they just do in real life.
One way to maybe create more chances on scoring is to have your D-men shoot more often from the blue line and set your strategy to crash the net. If you can't score pretty goals must as well get the garbage ones.

I play almost exclusively with the Sharks online and I find that Cheechoo's goals are usually far more skillful (i.e. wrist shot into the top corner past a diving keep) than Thornton, Goc, Grier etc... To be honest I haven't looked at his ratings (i don't think I've looked at anything other than overall for all the players) but he definitely scores more frequently than anyone else. Thornton's one timer passes to Cheechoo are DEADLY.10spro wrote:I have been playing OTP mostly with this game, so I tried a few offline exhibitions and I can see where the rant is on goals. I'll also add something that I picked up in one of the OS discussions on scoring. It is really really important to AIM your shot based on the goalies position. I realize that sounds pretty "duh" but I can't tell you how much it helped me to practice being able to instinctively be able to shoot the puck exactly where I want it. I used to just rocket the puck at the goalie and hope for the best and you can sometimes get away with that but it isn't going to wiinn you a ton of games. Its all about quality of shots (not quantity) at the end of the day. This is probably why I'll sometimes win games 2-1 where I've had half as many shots as the other team. I tend to pass a lot just to get right look at the goal and then try my luck with a quick wrist shot.
Deke'ing is mandatory for me. I have to move the puck around on the stick a bit too which seems to get the goalie a bit off balance, out of position for a shot.

I use the Sharks too. Cheecho doesn't work that well as a scorer for me but as a passer from the wing, it works out pretty well.
One thing I notice is that if you pass it back and forth quickly enough, the CPU goalie will do the splits at some point but aiming for the corners often ends in an errant shot, either hit the posts or the crossbar or miss entirely.
Human goalies tend to drift out too far one way or another.

Trying to hit the openings is all fine and dandy, but I find with the accuracy post patch that it's nigh impossible to do, at least the default settings. I find it's just as hard to pick a spot with Hemsky as it is Stortini!
I think the patch went a tad overboard with decreasing the accuracy while "on the move".
I kinda agree with the sentitment on OS, that this patch sacrificed the offline play for the online world.... That said, I'll probably keep it, as I need a hockey fix.

I don't play much human vs. CPU, but offline human vs. human play is a blast for me. While regulation may occassionally end 1-1 or 2-1, more often I'm seeing 3-4 goals for the winner. A 6-1 result was the standout deficit last time I played.
A few of the goals come from one-timers, but rebounds, dekes and wristers taken in place of the one-timer (as you wait for the goalie to overplay the shot) seem as frequent.
Also, WCO's goal on the goalie going into a desperation split is good for a goal once every game or two. I've also shot wide and rung them off posts during the split too, so it's not a guarantee by any stretch. It really shines for me in PvP...

Well if the defense in front of the goalie is good, you don't often get a chance to pass it back and forth and get the goalie to do the desperation split.
I like that name.
Other thing too is sometimes, you get a shot, or even an intended pass, where the puck is moving real slow.
That seems to really confuse the goalie. A lot of times, the puck bounces off the goalie, leaving potential rebound opportunities. Or those slow pucks actually slide right through the 5 hole and becomes a goal. Or the goalie covers up the goal as if it was some tough save and he has to recover (but the rocket ones, he snatches out of the air like nothing).
I don't watch that much hockey but that's one thing which seems to be rare in the real sport, the goalie kicking out the puck to start the rush the other way. Most of the time they seem to cover up and settle for the faceoff. In NHL, the goalie can drop the puck out with almost impunity. Opposing players most of the time can't easily pick up the puck.
And the boards play is nothing like the NHL. In real life, a player can shield the puck with his body and get control of it but in the game, if you're near the boards, you're going to get plastered just about every time and the puck comes loose.

Agreed wco.. and something they really need to improve next year is board play and goalie play.
I'd also love to see a fighting system close to NHL 2k9 and a faceoff system like NHL 2k8.
They also need to make players seem different than one another as far as checking goes.. I mean.. I can check a power forward on his butt no matter if it's Cam Jansen or Paul Kariya.

Well, I just had a game this afternoon against the blues, and beat them 4-2. (oddly, the same score as real life yesterday)
That's the first game I've hit 4 in forever, and they were all different goals. Neat one timer, a quick passing play followed by a wrister going against the grain, a deflection, and... can't remember the other one, lol.
If this keeps up, I"ll stop ranting.... I still think it's too hard to pick corners, but I don't want to crank accuracy as it would probably screw up shot totals... but that will be my first sacrifice if need be.

One thing I have done to increase scoring is increase Shooting Accuracy a notch up from default. This has led me to have more goals per game, 2-4, and also let's the CPU increase scoring too. Also, Power Plays become lethal for both the cpu and human player. I've had a lot of exciting games just with this minor change.
I had this breakaway goal a couple of nights ago. I kid you not this was to win the game in the final 10 secs. I would've been sooooooo pissed had I been on the losing end of this one
:):)

This is the funniest goal I've seen in the game, cpu scored on itself as I never even had to touch the puck, the defenseman slams his stick at the end to make it even more enjoyable.

So now the 400 threads about it over on the EA forums can stop.
I think some parents need to monitor their kids more closely.... I heard everything from threats of boycotts, to theories that Reebok was "punishing" EA for last years fiasco by letting 2k9 release their code before EA.

There is supposed to be one out "before christmas time" or so.
You know who gets more respect when Madden gets weekly rosters, with a FAQ file detailing the moves, and NHL gets only a few.
I took that last one and tried to make most of the moves myself.
I also have to say, since raising shot power to 4, on the default all star game speed, both sides are scoring goals.... averaging 3 to 4 a side, and the shots are even semi-realistic totals as well!
