Dan you talk like the PS3 has no issues. I've had to send 2 of them back for Drive problems. Yes they aren't as prevalent as the 360 issues but they do exist.
Plus there is no comparison when it comes to Live vs what the PS3 has to offer as an online service. I'm by no means saying the PS3 is a bad investment, like I said I own 2, but if you've waited this long it makes no sense to buy one now.
Sony as crazy as they are have to cut the price this summer and I would bet it will be around E3.

If you ever have any inkling of EVER playing online with friends, be careful with a PS3. Yeah, it's (generally) more stable & u can play the same games, but those 'same' games are a pain in the ass to play online.
Last week, I saw a buddy try to play another person online with The (almighty) Show, it was interesting to say the least...

Danimal, there's issues with any electronic device you buy. But the sheer amout of the problems with the 360 far outnumber the PS3. Where else do you see a dedicated thread devoted to the 360 problems? Now, part of that might be because more people own the 360. I don't know. For me personally, I know I wouldn't have the patience some of you have. Then again, as stated by Greg online is fairly archaic on the PS3. But, I really feel that's dependent on the game. The Show has always been poor online, but Warhawk at least in my experience ran very well. As did Hot Shots golf. In either case online surely be a deciding factor whether or not to stick with the 360.
Luckily, it looks like they're gonna keep warrantying it forever.MizzouRah wrote:Well, it has only happened to me once and the repair process was excellent.
I don't know, the ps3 doesn't do much for me.
I'd buy another 360 if my warranty was up.

There is a dedicated thread here. the PS3 Drive Failure is no where near the number or RROD's but it's by no means a small problem.
I have 2 360's, my first launch one RROD in 2 months and I got a new one and it's been fine since.
The newer one I bought like 1.5 years ago has never had an issue. We have a launch one in our break room that gets used every day for lunch time Halo, it has never broken. In fact out of about 12 launch consoles here at work only 2 have RROD.
IMO sending it in for repair and getting a refurb your chances are about 85% that you're going to have the same issue. Trade that thing in and get an Arcade with the new chip set.
I also disagree about online on the PS3 it blows regardless. I have KZ2, Show, MGS, Socom and Warhawk, the online for all of them sucks. It's not even comparable Live owns that market.
Again I think everyone should own both system, the PS3 is a nice piece of hardware probably the best system hardware wise I've ever seen. But if I had to choose one it would be the 360 it's a better complete package.
Also Best Buy still offers the replacement plans I have one on my 360's, I think anyone who gets one without a plan is just asking for trouble.

Unfortunately for me the last one I had go bad was a 4 month old arcade unit with all the new goodies.
I am at the point online means very little to me. In all the time I played online in leagues and such, only one time did I ever see one completed (and that was just three of us at SGN playing NCAA 08, of course when we tried NCAA 09 it ended in failure).
For me the blurray is just a sidenote. Nice to have but not the reason I want it. Going PS3 opens up a whole new catalog to try. HSG and MLB are no brainers but I would also like Little Big Planet and rent out some other PS3 exclusive games.
I think I might even be picking up a Wii along the way. The PS3 will be first but if TW and the tennis game get good reviews, I might go for it.

If you're not into online play or shooters then I would say get a PS3.
I personally didn't and still don't get the hype about LBP although my work buddies are fanatics but I don't like platformers.
To me Uncharted is one of the best games I've played in the past 5 years so I highly recommend that.

I don't care about PSN vs. XBL but the thing that annoys me about the PS3 is that many of their exclusives have no online component at all whatsoever.
And no, I don't count high scores or showing trophies on your avatar as online components.
It's likely Uncharted 2 and God of War 3 won't have any kind of online mode. If MS had funded these games, you know there would be.

Well, I guess I can be added to the list. My video went green, then went away. So I suppose I'm going to get another one this weekend. <sigh> 100 bucks to get it fixed, or 150 to just get a new one with a trade in of the FUBAR'ed one...yeah, I'm buying a new one...

Sounds like the solder worked it's way loose on the system board. There's a service on ebay where they reflow the solder on the system board and it fixes the problem. The cost is usually $79 for the repair. The same thing happens to the PS3 which usually triggers the YLOD.Teal wrote:Well, I guess I can be added to the list. My video went green, then went away. What is the 150 trade in you're referring to? I don't have any current problems (3rd system though, both repaired by MS) but I was just wondering if this was a standard thing through MS or if you're talking about a retailer?Teal wrote:Well, I guess I can be added to the list. Retailer. The last time I checked, the much loved GamestopGameSeven wrote:What is the 150 trade in you're referring to? Ah, that makes sense. But really, I'll only have to shell out an additional 99 bucks after trade in and store credit, so for 20 extra dollars, I can have a shiny new one...Rodster wrote:Sounds like the solder worked it's way loose on the system board. The bad news - replacement 360 I've had for 2+ years went RROD on me
The good news - since it's RROD, I expect a free replacement
I called MS a few weeks ago stating I was getting video freezes and that from experience RROD would be forthcoming. The MS rep on the other end of the phone, who was clearly not born in these parts (good old call center outsourcing...) stuck to her script and wouldn't use logic. Was faced with spending $100 to send it in and get fixed, but I just told her I'd run it until RROD happened. My luck it did. This makes 2 dead 360s. If it weren't for my existing library, the great games on the 360, and my love of streaming Netflix videos through the 360, I'd be bailing on the thing.

I stumbled across this for those who forever want to eliminate RROD, a Lian-Li 360 modding case.

Well mine appears to have done the dance of death as well. Had just applied the update and was loading Madden in when funny characters showed up on the screen. Thought it might just be the disk but then the happy lights began blinking on the system power indicator.
Have a PS3 and might not bother purchasing a replacement (warranty period is over of course
I've been getting back into board wargaming via vassal so won't miss the console gaming as much as I might have a year ago. But will miss hooking up for the occasional on-line game with you folks.
Best wishes,
Doug

Doug you might want to check out the Xbox 360 arcade. It has the new Jasper chips which run ultra cool and should pretty much eliminate the RROD. Some retailers sell them for $169 on sale. Take off your old hard drive and install it on the arcade 360.
p.s. check Dell.com as recently they were selling the elites for $205 and the $169 Arcades sometimes are sold there.

Thanks I'll have a look and think about it - not terribly inclined right now to jump for another xbox as my gaming time is increasingly taken up with boardgames. Even getting back into ASL - good lord!Rodster wrote:Doug you might want to check out the Xbox 360 arcade. It has the new Jasper chips which run ultra cool and should pretty much eliminate the RROD. I'll be picking up FIFA for sure but likely for the PS3 now which in some ways I don't mind as I prefer the PS3 controller for sports games.
Best wishes,
Doug
