Thanks Bd awsome stuff.

I saw both conferences on the gamespot site and both were underwhelming to me. Maybe I've been playing games too long or just don't buy into the hype machines anymore. I would have been more impressed if they showed some more PSP sports games tonight.

It's all about online: If the PS3 doesn't have a better online service than XBL, it could have enough power to launch the Space Shuttle and I still won't buy it.

Take care,

I like the look of it better than the X3, if nothing else because you can choose the color.

Controller does look very odd, but with its boomerang shape, maybe it will come back to me when I throw it across the room.

BD, thanks for all the updates.

I definitely like the look of the PS3 better, but looks won't sell me a console of course.

The controller is a major concern--I don't see how the triggers can be completely analog like the XBox controller. I can not go back to "pressure sensitive" analog for racing games.

The online part is huge as well--Sony has to have something up their sleeve, but they don't have the best track record on stuff like that (Sony Connect music store?).

The early pictures of games certainly look more impressive than the X360's; that much I will admit.

But the controller looks like sh**. Based on the shape, anybody with small hands will have a serious problem reaching the analog sticks.

I had a PS1 controller shaped like that, and it was literally painful to use. The buttons were hard to reach -- especially the triggers at the top.

An PK is right.. If Sony's online model still stinks, I'll stick with MS. I plan on getting in much more live in the next gen. That will easy with FREE live weekends.

The dealmaker -- and dealbreaker -- for me will be online capability, service and interface. The graphics and hardware of the PS3 don't mean sh*t to me if the online component isn't as robust as Microsoft's. System specs and pretty visuals don't hook me up for hilarious times online with DSP buds.

We'll see what Sony offers. It might be a bit telling, though, that MS made a big point of pimping its next-gen XBL during its Xbox 360 launch while Sony seemed pretty mum about online gaming during its PS3 launch presentation. Maybe I missed the details.

Well I'm pretty sure after watching Microsoft's success with Xbox Live there's no way Sony releases another console without a state of the art online community. They know without a doubt that this is the one area where Microsoft has destroyed them...I can't see them letting that happen again.

Doesn't make any difference to me, I'm buying both the 360 and PS3. Online is just a bonus feature to me...I spend 90% of my gaming time playing single player anyway. Until someone comes out with some sort of plan to combat cheaters, cheesers, and pricks, online play will ALWAYS have flaws.

Did anybody else notice this quote from one of the press releases:

"Each generation of PlayStation has made a dramatic improvement in how we create and play videogames. PLAYSTATION 3 will be a breakthrough in how the world experiences entertainment. EA is fully aligned with Sony Computer Entertainment -- we share their vision and applaud their success."

Larry Probst, Chairman and CEO, Electronic Arts

Does this mean that once again EA will be developing for the Sony console and porting to the MS console? I guess that might not be a bad thing, if the PS3 ends up being the more powerful of the two consoles.

If you watch the Xbox video, the EA guy says that they have 25 titles in devlopement for the 360 and that is the largest commitment they have every made to a console pre-launch.

In other words all of this is hype and BS from EA, whom ake a living out of it.

I'm in a wait and see on the PS3 because Sony has not been truthful too many times for me to jump in without looking again. I know what I will be getting with the 360 and Live and I like it.

I want someone to tell me they saw a functioning PS3 or 360 at E3 and actually played a game on it, before I get too excitied about supposed game play footage.

In the poll about buying plans, most people cited XBL as well as early release as the reasons they were leaning towards X360.

If you're invested in XBL, there is no reason to change. After all, you have your settings and friends list all set up. No point in going to another service even if it's "better" (which is going to be subjective).

MS says they want over 50% of X360 owners to go on XBL. Well the Silver accounts are free (but probably requires credit card registration, so that they can bill you for microtransactions) so if they count those, it will go a long ways toward that 50% threshold.

I think the thing about free online play on weekends for Silver members was a rumor before the X360 unveiling wasn't it? It hasn't been confirmed by MS?

If EA does 1080p games without sacrificing frame rate and uses Blu-Ray discs, that would be a good sign of how much they're supporting the PS3.

If they just make it 720p and stay with DVDs, then probably there won't be too much difference between different versions of their games.

Of course, you just need a $5000+ 1080p display.

I'm not so sure about that, Bad. MS may have destroyed Sony in online gaming, but since the numbers of people who game online regularly are still smaller than we think, then maybe Sony won't go balls-out on online interface.

I'm the exact opposite -- I spend probably 90 percent of my gaming time on Xbox Live, so the console with the best online interface and service gets my money. I will remain console monogamous, as always, in the next generation, so the online gaming model will be pivotal.

Word. That's all I care about. I don't play much console now that my WE buddy moved away. I'd buy an xbox and go for live but given how close next gen is, it makes sense to wait.

The console looks great, it's the controller that looks but-ugly.

From Gamespot

It will also sport a slot for a detachable 2.5-inch HDD, somewhat similar to the Xbox 360's. Sony did not mention if the drive would be standard.

Weaver2005 wrote:I dont know what all those specs mean but will ps3 have jaggies or no jaggies?

Probably less jagies than PS2 BUT there will still be a VRAM memory bandwidth bottle neck for the PS3. This is where the XBOX 360 has an advantage with the embedded DRAM.

I read that the PS3 hard drive will be sold seperately. Hopefully it will be included with the PS3 hardware.

The PS3 CELL will have several advantages: Much greater floating point calculations, will run game engines better, better phyics.

The XBOX 360 CPU will run branched code for AI routines better.

You are right, it will come down to the talent of the developers because the better specs only make it possible to do more. It will take time to learn the new hardware and to code for multi core processors though.
