I've heard that the new Weezer is pretty weak musically and lyrically. Haven't listened to it myself yet though.
I listened to the new Spoon CD (Gimme Fiction) today and it's quite good. Need to listen to it more to come up with better observations. I know that "I Turn On My Camera" is a free download at www.amazon.com and that song is quite excellent.
To clarify the Postal Service, it's a collaboration between electronic producer Jimmy Tamaraello (I think that's how you spell it) and Ben Gibbard (the lead singer of Death Cab for Cutie). The album is entitled 'Give Up' and is awesomely catchy although the lyrics a bit shallow (think teen love songs, sort of, but better).
I've been interested in hearing some Architecture in Helsinki. I hear they're great. I'll have to check them out for sure very soon.

Funny, I was listening to Meadowlake Street off the same album on the way home tonight and was thinking the same thing. Shame that there are virtually no radio stations that play this kind of music, and that most people will never hear a single song from the double cd. Good stuff.pk500 wrote:Man, "When Will You Come Back Home" off the new Ryan Adams album, "Cold Roses," is the prettiest new song I've heard this year. Just a gorgeous tune.
What rap were you listening to before NWA?Leebo33 wrote:LOL.RobVarak wrote:This thread is like a litany of bad white music!
I pretty much gave up on "non-white" music when Prince changed his name, Michael Jackson changed his appearance, and rap got violent. I'll hear a good hook on the radio and then the next line will be something like "roses really smell like poo."
Damn that s*** was dope!

Ah, but there IS a station that plays this kind of music: WDST, Woodstock Radio, from Kingston/Poughkeepsie, N.Y. It streams online. Check it out -- excellent station.GTHobbes wrote:Funny, I was listening to Meadowlake Street off the same album on the way home tonight and was thinking the same thing. I know it's not my quote but I'll answer the question from my perspective. Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, and Sugarhill Gang to name a few. Ah, those were the days. A fresh new style of music that really was a form of expression.Jayhawker wrote:What rap were you listening to before NWA?Leebo33 wrote:LOL.RobVarak wrote:This thread is like a litany of bad white music!

I picked up the new Dave Matthews Band cd and it isn't really doing much for me. I'm a big fan of DMB too. I'm not saying it's bad but it didn't make me take SOAD out of the cd player.
I am a patient boy.

Yeah, I loved those. Kurtis Blow, Fat Boys, and Whodini come to mind as well.ScoopBrady wrote:I know it's not my quote but I'll answer the question from my perspective. I know all of that was out there, but I never really made a point of listening to rap until NWA, but got bored with it by the time Dre started "discovering" talent.ScoopBrady wrote:I know it's not my quote but I'll answer the question from my perspective. I saw 24-7 Spyz way back in the day (as in Nirvana opened for them) at the Outhouse in Lawrence, KS. Great show (not so great records) but what really hit me was that they pumped out the first side of Straight Outta Compton before they came on. I bought it the next day. I was just blown away by it. Too bad the imitators never got what really made it such an awsome record.

I bought the new Sleater-Kinney album, The Woods. Absolutely rocks your socks off. I have never heard an all-girl group sound like this. It helps that they have one of the best drummers in popular music. She has this enormous, distorted drum sound that reminds me of the drums from Kiss's "I Love It Loud." Check out "Entertain" -- if you like that, you'll like the album.
I also picked up Stars Set Yourself on Fire. It's another 80s-esque CD, but very catchy pop that reminds me of The Postal Service. They have a nice male/female vocal duo going. One song in particular, "Ageless Beauty," is one of those epidemically catchy songs I am playing to death.

Somebody's probably mentioned Bloc Party already in this thread. Even so, Silent Alarm deserves another plug.
It's neo new wave with feet planted squarely in 1978 and 2005. They've captured the essence of "Drums & Wires" era XTC before Andy Partridge went all artsy-fartsy. Great rhythm section, lots of hooks and a sound that jumps out of the speakers/headphones.

Thought I would check this out since you speak so highly of it. First impressions: Damn, are these the ugliest 3 women in music?Brando70 wrote:I bought the new Sleater-Kinney album, The Woods. Nice to see someone else is keen on them - I saw them last year, and they were fantastic.Jared wrote:Kraftwerk is coming out with an album (Minimum Maximum) from their live tour Tuesday. I saw them in concert a few days ago...for a bunch of 50-somethings on laptops and mixer boards, it was an amazing show. Worth getting, especially if you're a fan of electronic music.
Minimum-Maximum is basically a 2CD live Greatest Hits, and is well worth getting hold of, even if you haven't heard much by them before.
I think it's fair to say that if Ralf Hutter farted in the bath and recorded it, it would still be far more interesting than the entire recording careers of people like Oasis or Coldplay.
Others may disagree

"The players come from all over the world, the money from deep underneath the Persian Gulf, but, as another, older City poster campaign put it, this is their city. They may now exist in the global spotlight, but they intend to keep it that way."
I picked it up last week. It is more mellow than their first, but it is still pretty solid. I just love Cornell's voice with distorted guitars behind him and there are a few songs with this. I think the "Be Yourself" song sounds like a U2 song, but it is still pretty catchy. I don't think it is better than their first, but if you liked the first, you'll like this one. I would recommend it.GTHobbes wrote:anyone pick up the new Audioslave? I've always liked Chris Cornell but couldn't get excited to go out and get this new one at release. I'd be curious to hear what anyone thinks about it.

SFZ_2.0, the Bloc Party album is really something. I am still playing it a lot, and "Helicopter" is my favorite song this year.
get the new Collective Soul CD "Youth"!
Ok, so they are my favorite band, but it's still a good comeback release for them. Not as good as their "self titled" CD or "Dosage" but good nontheless. Standout tracks are the beautiful accoustic "Satellite", the catchy poppy "Better Now", the hook-laden "Home" and the guitar riff driven "Counting The Days".

I've been meaning to check this one out, as well as the new Belle & Sebastian which is really a collection of EPs but is supposed to be fantastic nonetheless.Brando70 wrote:I bought the new Sleater-Kinney album, The Woods. Absolutely rocks your socks off.
sudz is definitely on point when he recommends Spoon - Gimme Fiction. I stopped listening to it for a couple weeks and over the last couple of days have been listening to it pretty steadily.
Oh, and Brando, I believe that the female from Stars (or maybe both of them) is included in the collective that is Broken Social Scene, so if you haven't checked them out already (which I'm quite sure you probably have) be sure to; You Forgot It In People is an amazing pop album. In any case, hurray for Canadian music that doesn't include rakish French women or manufactured r0ck punk0rs.
Oh, and if anybody still hasn't checked out Arcade Fire then you should probably be shot in the face.
