>>>BTW, Mix and I were talking last night about how this would be a perfect game for PK to get in on when he's had a few too many. The curse words would be flying... <<<
Teal:
I'm renting this game, for sure, and it's almost certain that I only will play this game online when I'm altered. Sounds like it's a game that almost demands intoxication ...
Take care,
PK

I rented burnout 3 at the Buster today mainly to put on my HDL. Anyway, I decided to throw it in and play it for about a half an hour or so to see how the PS2 version compared with the XBOX version.
I gotta tell you, I'm very surprised that it actually holds up well. I prefer the XBOX controller for these types of games, but the PS2 controls are very intuitive as well.... using the X as the gas, Square as the breaks and R1 as turbo. Even more surprsing is how nice the game looks on the Deuce!
EA struck it big when they acquired Criterion that's for sure. They're the same folks that make RenderWare and apparently they know their s*** when it comes to developing for the PS2 hardware. The game has better particle effects on the PS2 than it does on the XBOX. That's not to say that it looks better overall on the 2, but damn it is definitely one of the top looking games for the system. On top of it's great looks the load times are roughly the same length as on the XBOX. They may be longer, but without playing directly back to back I could not tell a difference in the length of load times. Thought for sure that the loading times would be just shy of decade on the PS2 version. Oh by the way, this is pre-HDL install.
If you don't have an XBOX and you've been on the fence about whether or not to pick up the PS2 version, by all means do so. They did one hell of a job with this game.

That's what I'm hoping for. I just picked it up tonight because I am simmed out. I played a little Indy Car last night for the first time in ages and I had this strange urge to slam into the other cars and cause a major pileup...lol.Boom wrote:Oh and PK,
Just the other day I could have sworn I read a post about you complaining that you were "sim'd-out". Well Jesus H Christ if this game isn't the cure for that!

Nope. Rental first. The first two Burnouts had amazing "wow" factor for about a week and then got dull.Spooky wrote:If you are really quiet and listen very carefully...you can hear PK rummaging through his closet to find an old Bills hat to sell on eBay for this one!
I also remember how the board was abuzz over Midtown Madness 3 -- including me, who purchased it a day or two after its release -- and how no one from DSP was playing it online after about three weeks, and the random games became infested with teen dickheads.
So I'm skeptical this game will have legs for me for more than a month, even with online play and a deeper World Tour mode. I'll pass judgment after a rental!
Take care,
PK

You'll probably get great enjoyment with this title during a rental period. I could see it going either way. To me at this point, it has just enough new to it to warrant a purchase.
My impressions after about 6 hours of playing time is that it is every bit as good as the last two and then some. EA has dome NOTHING to screw up this game at all. In fact, even the online mode is a ton more LIVE friendly than other EA titles. The sense of speed is absolutely mind melting! I have found myself feeling like Stallone in 'Driven', just blurring out the rest of the world and getting into a zone on these fast tracks!
Haven't started humming yet though...
Seriously, the speed it too insane. Dare I say a bit more than the last version!?!? Anyway, all the modes so far are proving to be extremely fun. I have now played most of the modes onlines (except for the 2 player crash ones) and they are a blast. Road Rage with teams is awesome fun. Even playing it one on one. A great game of hunt and get away!
On the flipside, I can se this game being similar to the 'Midtown Madness' syndrome, it is possilbe. I can safely say it is a better game all around (especially offline), but to some it might be debatable if there is really that much more than the first two to keep the 'cool' factor lasting longer.
I did find that the Mustang type car that is in the demo is definitely clunkier and slower manuvering than ANY of the other cars in the game which is why some may have gooten a bad impression from the demo. That car handles quite a bit differently than ALL of the others that I have driven so far. All of the others are a lot lighter and powerslide around corners beautifully.
Hmmmm...What else....
Have yet to play with any DSP'ers online so the random games I have played ahve actually been decent. That is a good sign.
The offline world touring mode is quite addicting. There is quite a bit to do in the 173 different races/crashes. The 3 different environments (USA, Europe, Asia) are really diverse and cool looking. The tracks are all breathtaking. There are some (the late sunsetting mountain track in USA comes to mind) that are just stunning and have some many great areas to both drift and lay on the boost. Great design! Great balance! Great use of traffic!
Basically, they seem to have totally nailed it for this type of game/series. To me, it is exactly where the 3rd installment should be of the Burnout games. I am impressed.

I only rented the first one so everything is pretty new to me. I do not regret the purchase one bit so far because it looks like I can squeeze 15-20 hours out of the offline mode alone. I was expecting some horrendous catchup AI, but I never felt like I lost a race I should have won.
I don't know how many DSPers will purchase the game, but I'd be willing to bet that the "online life" is at least as long as most racing games except TOCA2.

That would be impressive if true because we played PGR 2 and Moto GP 2 pretty steady on XBL for about three and six months, respectively, from my foggy memory.
Take care,
PK

I never saw many people playing MotoGP2 and I have most DSPers on my friends list. Maybe I was on too early (9PM-12AM). I usually just saw Kruza and BBR playing. I don't recall many MotoGP2 "poker nights" or leagues.pk500 wrote:>>>I don't know how many DSPers will purchase the game, but I'd be willing to bet that the "online life" is at least as long as most racing games except TOCA2.<<<

PGR2 certainly had a longer online DSP life than most games.

Just a heads up for those who haven't picked this one up yet and have a Frys near them. It's on sale (both PS2 and Xbox) for $34.99 starting today. I'm heading over there to pick up my copy later today. Gotta love being able to legitimely go to Frys for work purposes while taking advantage of deals like that for yourself.

I am a patient boy.
I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait.
My time is water down a drain.

I am loving the AI in this game!!! It cheats just the right amount for an arcade game. I had some races last night that literally took my breath away as I kept battling this a-hole for first. It was a one on one race and we must have exchanged leads like 20 times on this HUGE one lap track! Too intense. The thing is that I never really felt like it was cheating to catch up. I mean, I would nail him off the track in a serious takedown and then I would be ahead like 3 seconds. Then, if I I drove semi-flawlessly, he would stay at a couple seconds behind. Then if I screwed up, he would go flying past until I worked up enough boost to catch up to him and take him out again. I have had a few races like that. Seems fair to me.
The tracks are just amazing. I can't stress enough how well this game was developed to have tracks conducive to HUGE speeds and serious traffic and not have it be one big mess. What’s sometimes a bit frustrating but adds to the intensity is the visibility on some tracks. Sometimes it is a bit hard to see what is up ahead due to a slight glare or heavy clutter, BUT, I feel that this is totally intentional and just adds to the overall depth of the game. It is sooo cool when I find myself locking into a certain view ahead and just FLYING past/through heavy traffic like I am in a serious zone. I can't even believe some of the moves I have pulled off and obstacles I have avoided. There have been stretches where I think there is no f'in way I just pulled that off, but I did! Like times when the sun is glaring, there is construction on the road, the traffic is horrendous, and I am fixed on headlights coming at me at 200+ MPH and I am weaving in and out like it is 20 MPH. F*ckin' GREAT!
I am really lovin' this game. I hope to see some DSP'ers on tonight for a bunch of racing, crashing, raging, ect... That is another thing that is great, the different online modes really break up any monotony. We can race each other for a while, the do a party crash for like 5 rounds, the team up for some road rage and then race some more. Let's do it tonight fellas!

Damn man, this has been one of those games that I'm like totally addicted to. I'm struggling on getting the gold medal in a couple of crash games and I spent half the day at work thinking about what line or angle to take and what to hit to cause the pile-ups etc.
Almost started shaking. When a game really has me thinking about it at work, that's when I know it's good.
