DB's solution is correct. And thanks for the correction on EA, Web.

I don't like spending dough on car packs, but this game includes 200 cars out of the box. That's a healthy chunk.

Spending money on time transport is different. MS isn't erecting a toll booth for access to certain areas of the map through this system. As I understand it, MS only is charging those who are too impatient to wait to drive to those areas. I have no problem with that.

I still have the option to reach those areas for free by driving, and that's exactly what I'm going to do.

http://forzamotorsport.net/en-us/Rally_ ... _Announce/

$20 expansion for more Rally in the game. With all the crazy season pass, car packs, pre-order stuff, in-game micro-transactions, this title definitely moves Microsoft up to EA Sports levels in variety of ways to get your money.
Depending on what they truly deliver in terms of additional rally options, I could see myself paying for this. However, they really need to "fix" the force feedback/control first. If it was Forza 4/Dirt 3 force feedback, along with true rally stage an rules, carrying damage across stages, proper multiplayer, etc. I would glady pay an additional $20, but I doubt that is what it will be. That is what Codies should have done for Dirt 3. Have a "hard core" pack for a true rally sim, close to the old Colin McRae days. That I would glady pay extra for it.

The bad thing is that this nickel and diming actually works on gamers with that "Gotta Catch 'Em All!" mentality. Even though I spend far less money on that gaming hobby than I used to, I find myself falling into this trap. For example, I ended up purchasing all the additional courses for TW13 even though there is no way I will ever end up playing them all. I just purchased the Trials Evoultion expansion pack, but I have not come close to finishing the levels that came standard in the game, not to mention all the free user content. I have been an iRacing member for 4 years and own every car and track, even though I have probably only raced on half of them (if that). Sadly, this model works on people like me, so I guess I can't fault them for capitalizing on it. However, while I will probably purchase the car packs, rally, etc., you guys can shoot me if I ever pay to "jump" to a point on the map.

If they increase rumble feedback, it's a solid purchase for me, provided it's more than a couple of tracks and a handful of cars. For 20 bucks, it'd better be. But if it is pretty full featured, and done well, it'd be a good purchase, considering that DiRT developers were also in on the development of this one.

You know, I really don't care one way or the other about the DLC, pay-or-not-pay, all that crap, personally. But I'm definitely guilty of what Don explained--"gotta have 'em all!". I do it with entire GAMES, not just DLC, a lot of the time.

But on the subject of the actual game, I had no interest in Forza Horizon. I don't know why, it just didn't seem like something I'd play much. Then I played the demo and made a couple of runs on the first two tracks and saw what people were mentioning earlier. Seeing the rival times and whatnot could be extremely addictive in the full version, I bet. The game was just fun and forgiving enough to attack the track even if you don't know the layout that well. I think it could be pretty fun.

Now back to your regularly scheduled rant on DLC and F2P strategies in full priced titles!

Sorry about the rant. The funny thing is, I probably wouldn't have bothered with looking into the game at all had I not tried and been pleasantly surprised by the demo. It went from 'ignore' to 'strongly consider' based on how much fun I had with that alone. I know driving from one spot to another just to enter races is the type of time-wasting thing that would drive me batty, though. (I hated it in BO:Paradise, too)

I'll wait for impressions now, I guess, or rent, before picking up, just so I can get a better idea of how annoying it is.

I AM a sucker for time/score chasing...

LOVE the demo. I could never get into Forza because I just am not into tweaking cars that much. I want to get in and drive (and crash!). I loved Dirt 2 and PGR, so this is really my kind of racing game.

I downloaded the Forza 4 demo the other night to see if maybe my impressions of that game were wrong, in the context of the fun Forza Horizon demo.

Nope.

Forza 4 is so damn sterile. It's so damn joyless and lifeless. It has ZERO mojo. It's a console driving and car-tuning laboratory and little more. It bored me to tedium.

Forza Horizon solves those problems. The environments, music, graphics, storyline, driving model and gameplay modes teem with life and spirit.

I know that sounds cheesy and metaphysical as f*ck, but it's true -- at least for me.

Seems like this might be a good choice for the racing game I buy once every 7 years whether I need it or not?

PK,

If you loved the Horizon demo you might also want to check out Dirt 2 and PGR 4 - both are very similar in terms of driving mechanics/feel and a crapload of fun.

I also really enjoyed the demo (reminded me a lot of Dirt 2 which I love) but I just have no idea when the hell I'll find time to play it with all the games already out and those coming out soon. I may end up picking it up in a few months on sale.

100% agree with web about the driving to different races - pissed the hell out of me in Burnout Paradise as well.

Macca:

Thanks for the tip, man. I owned and enjoyed DIRT 3 quite a bit, except for the Gymkhana crap. I dig Ken Block's YouTube videos, but I don't like doing it in games.

I also owned PGR 4. It was fun, but the driving model was nowhere near as grippy and weighted as the sublime simcade driving model of the first two PGR games on the original Xbox.

The idea of driving balls-out through traffic or even just cruising to the next race is VERY appealing to me. But I'm a car guy. So go figure! :)

I just don't understand that. Enjoy the ride...it's a driving/racing game, not a warping/racing game... :D

The other appealing thing is that this fits very well with my gaming habits today. I could hop in for a specific event if I have limited time, go online for DSP nights, or just drive around the landscape looking for adventures and virtual 20-something girls with daddy issues. :D

So which DSPers are getting Forza Horizon this week? I'd like to organize some DSP races!

I hope to buy it by Thursday. Busy week of work and kid activities might prevent me from getting to Best Buy until later in the week.

I ordered it from the MS store on their pre-order deal with standard shipping, so I presume I won't receive it until the end of the week. There might be some others in the same boat.

I will have it tomorrow. Now I am just trying to figure out which other two games to get from Best Buy. NHL13, Madden13, FIFA13, NBA2K13, XCom?

I think I'll be grabbing it in the best buy deal as well. I LOVE Xcom, so I would push that, but try the demo first if you have not yet. Style of game is not for everyone, but the demo should let you know where you stand.

I did the same deal but it appears they upgraded the shipping to next day saver for free. You should check your order status as it may be a free perk of using their pre-order offer.

Interesting... I just checked checked and my copy was sent next day air today! Not bad, 1600 MS points, $10 gift certificate, and free next day air - quite a deal! :)

Yep, my game is out for delivery today as well. Maybe I'll see some of you guys online tonight.
