This is honestly the coolest feature I can imagine; collecting 6 DSP players on any given night shouldn't be that hard. So, sign up and let's bring the cup to DSP!

Latest from Littman. Sounds like the D will be more aggressive during PK's even on Pro level.

Wished they kept the hip-checks.

Question, has the hockey genre passed me by to where I wouldn't like playing the game? I don't care to watch the game on TV, but I've always enjoyed the old video games of Hockey. Seeing PK post about all the NHL mods he had for the PC version interested me. Can I pick up and play this game or is it too techincal now? Danke.

Last years NHL 08 was very pickup and play because of the simple controls with the analog stick.

If you're inclined, this years version is purported to include an optional "NHL 94" control setting, with the simplified control scheme of that well-regarded (for its time) version. Of course, you can always then experiment with the modern controls which IMHO most could pick up without too much difficulty.

They call the right stick the skill stick and they plan to expand the use of it, especially to defense.

LOL. The local AAA affiliate of the Phillies, Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, had a PR issue back in the spring. There was a contest to name the new mascot, a pig, and the name "Porkchop" won the contest. It was then promptly shot down because a local Latino complained that the name was a derogatory term towards latinos. I never heard of this but the team then went with name #2, Ferrous. Iron, Ferrous, get it?

In an odd twist of coincidence, the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs were formerly the Ottawa Lynx, which is where i live. Now, we have the Ottawa Rapidz, in the Can-Am league. (think lower then single A)

Come to think of it, the AHL has another weird team... I think it's the Ak-Ben-Sur Flames? I can't remember why the funky "city" names.....

Oh, PS: If I'm in Be a Pro mode and i'm sent to the Pork Chops, I will wear that pig with pride! ;)

Thanks for the video. OTP is looking good. I like the idea of being able to scout for a decent dude that knows the game to play online instead of some bunch of 16 year olds thrash talking.

I'll be very disappointed if the game doesn't let you make alt OTP players, and so far I've seen no mention of the concept at all. They talk about it being like a guild in an MMO, but who has ever been in a guild in an MMO without having some alts in there too?

I foresee a lot of frustration when getting together OTP sessions and having four forwards and one defensman in the lobby. As much as I enjoyed playing goalie in the last game, there's no way I am making a goalie for OTP in this one if it's the only character I can have. C'mon EA, don't sabotage a great idea with a stupid oversight like this!

I agree. While I'm getting this game regardless, the ability to save different profiles per position, or alts altogether should be high among the list of must haves. I have a sneaking suspicion that EA *has* overlooked this and that it will be considered for NHL 10. Hopefully I'm wrong.

To my understanding you can play any position. Your created player enters the lobby and everyone selects their position from there, so you may be a goalie one day and a forward the next. I think the leveling up applies to all positions as long as you stay in position and play whatever position you're supposed to be in correctly. I consider this a big plus, because I think I want to be a goalie, but not ALL the time.

I guess it's cool to be flexible and be able to be thrown at any position available but at the same token I'd like the option to save my preferred Center position for future online games, instead of just picking the less preferred spot left which is probably in between the pipes.

Passing is way too accurate, but otherwise the game looks fantastic.

Can't wait to get this one...

Sport, if what you're saying about choosing your position from game to game is true, then that's good enough for me. Alts would still be cool if only because of the customization options, but flexibility from game to game is what I'm after.

Overall, I think the game is most in need of sloppy puck action along the boards, as that would help a lot of the weak areas. The producer mentioned how the new flip-dump would allow true dump and chase offense. That will help, but for my money, the achilles heel of dump and chase was the ability of players to easily pick the puck off the boards and skate away. So you'd dump it in, or slap it around, and the defense would just take it off the boards before you could even get near them. Lack of pinning didn't help either, but really there's no snow build up along the boards in the game, and in real life it's just impossible to grab the puck right off the boards as if it were in the middle of the ice.

But hey, as long as they don't screw up something fundamental, and the new OTP thing works half as well as we are hoping, this is going to be great stuff and seriously challenge for my attention from the new 10 on 10 FIFA OTP. It's great to see EA Sports really push the online multiplayer envelope these last couple of years.

Very nice animations. The passing is too tape to tape for me, and the speed a bit too fast but I am sure with the help of the sliders it can be corrected.

Interesting breakdown of some of the misguided player ratings in NHL 09 from one of my favorite hockey blogs:

http://mirtle.blogspot.com/2008/08/bouw ... r-and.html

Jay Bouwmeester is the fastest skater in the NHL? Georges Laraque and Derek Boogaard are among the best checkers? Fighters, yes. But it's pretty hard to be a top checker when you have the agility of a telephone pole. And Saku Koivu tied atop the toughness ratings?

Sh*t, I better stop. Now I'm starting to sound like a kid at OS monitoring whether a football player is wearing the proper number of Nike sweatbands in Madden. :)

Take care,
PK

Well PK, those numbers matters a lot to Hockey nuts like you and I and let's be realistic to a lot of people especially in the States, those numbers mean nothing as long as EA produces a decent game of Hockey, the gameplay flows and online works wonders. Fortunately, a patch would fix those erroneous numbers but you do wonder as they prepared to launch the game, who approves those ratings?
