NBA 2K8 impressions thread

I'm enjoying both 2k hoops titles. There is a patch out for ps3 and it should be out for us 360 users this week that should tweak the few nagging problems. For me, the 2k hoops titles have surplanted football games as my most aniticipated games of the year. Now if we could only get a solid baseball game on the 360.

Yes. You can do 30-something and 50-something game seasons. I'm just not sure of the actual numbers.Zlax45 wrote:Can you do short seasons?Brando70 wrote:NBA 2k8 really is a terrific game. I believe 29 games is the shortest season you can play. I'd agree with most here that this is a great game. The animations in the game are top notch.warnerwlf98 wrote:Yes. I'm working on writing a review of College Hoops 2k8 for DSP, but I might be in for a thrashing since it won't be a very good review.
The fact is that the game is just 'ok'. Missing open lay-ups and 4-footers for no reason other than perhaps a FG% formula is frustrating. The players move relatively quickly, but their animations and general feel is more 'lumbering' than the college game should be. Passing is too crisp, there should be more errant passes and mistakes in the college game. There's STILL no real loose ball play. And, the excitement factor just isn't there in the presentation for me.
That said, it's OK. The defensive play is strong enough to prevent too many dunks/breaks so passing is the best way to score (as it should be in college). The graphics are passable, though not as 'cohesive' as I'd like.
Stay tuned for full review, but feel free to flame away in this thread until then.

I also "stole" the game for that price on Black Fridaycootdog wrote:Somewhat unbelievably, the 360 version was $28 at Target on Black Friday (and the following day). I waltzed in mid-morning and they had plenty still in the case.

I love it! It truly looks feels like I am controlling a real team when
I play it.
If they could only fix the wacky substitutions the computer will make for you if you leave it on auto. I hate wasting so much time doing my own subs, so I leave it on auto/ratings based until the 4th qtr, then I take over and do manual subbing.
I think the teams play to their strengths by playing to their players. For instance, if I play the Clippers, Elton Brand gets a lot of offense thrown his way, with Corey Maggette also taking a lot of shots. Play the Nuggets and you see a lot of Iverson and Anthony isolations, with some points by Nene and Camby off rebounds. Kidd works the ball to Jefferson and Carter on the Nets, while the Pistons will get offense from Billups, Jefferson, Prince, and Wallace, depending on who gets open or hot.Zlax45 wrote:Do teams actually play different in this game? Like Phoenix running and gunning while the Spurs slow the game down?
I don't know if each team really plays exactly like it does in real life, but they definitely feel different from each other in the game. That's probably the best thing about this year's game.
picked it up at bb today for 44.99. So far I really like it. It's a breath of fresh air.
I turned the speed up to 75 and I think it is just right. I thought default was a bit too slow. I really like how the star players can take over a game. I was playing against the Lakers and Kobe was lighting it up. My defense is total crap and I am still learning the controls.
I really like the R stick to shoot. I think it's a great idea and I haven't played 2k in a while so I didnt know they had that in this years game. I hope the game is deep because with Live, I got tired of it after a week.
but thus far I really like this game.

I have found that if you stick with controlling the guys on the block (PF/C) you can play some decent "D". You can run some weak side help, etc. with those guys. The worst thing to do, IMO, is constantly switch from player to player as the ball gets passed. The opposition will school you then. Occasionally I will stay on the other team's best player if its a SG/SF that runs off screens.Inuyasha wrote:Can any of you guys tell me how to play defense in this game?

I am convinced that there are more animations in the PS3 version of this game. I'm not sure why, but it has to be true. I picked up the PS3 version when my 360 went into the crapper, and I've seen a lot more things in this game than what I saw on the 360. I wonder if that is actually true, or if I just notice things more. Not sure which it is.
I use Bizcanos(??) sliders from OS. I've tweaked them a bit myself, mostly to lower the CPU shooting a tad.greggsand wrote:Finally got around to this game (360) today. Pretty fun, but now I'm looking for some realistic sliders - suggestions??
I'm definately no NBA pro, but just when I seem to think the sliders are wacked (both teams shooting 50% in a game for example) I'll have one where we both shoot low 40;s.....
I have no idea what the averages are in real life, I assume 45% for FG percentage????

No, but it's not running at 60 on the 360 from what I remember. There is a slight stutter occasionally when you play in the 2k view...otherwise it's pretty damn smooth. It's not quite as polished frame rate wise as the 360 version, but it's just a slight difference.TheGamer wrote:DB, is that game running 60fps on the PS3?
