For my money, there's no athlete in professional sports today who lifts me out of my seat like Alexander the Great.

And since I'm in a YouTube mood, this is still my favorite hockey fight of all time, when Stan Jonathan destroyed Pierre Bouchard despite being a foot shorter than the Quebecois lumberjack. This was a hell of a tilt, with at least 10 shots delivered by both combatants:

Although Kocer and Probert were the best 1-2 punch for the Redwings my favorite fight has to be with the Avs when little Mike Vernon met Patty Roy at center ice and promptly bloodied his eye.

During the Off-Season Phoenix added toughness to the team with the likes of G. Laraque, Jovocop, O. Nolan who hasn't played in over 2 years, a washed out J. Roenick, etc. While other teams are getting faster and younger, the Yotes chose the other venue. It's early in the season but the last couple of embarrasing losses has to have #99 all worried.

Does CAR know that the season has started?

Naw, they'll be fine. They were a bunch of pussies last year, so the toughness was needed anyway. They are a fringe playoff team right now.

Not quite sure how any team gives up 9 goals...and 5 in one period. Maybe I'm overestimating them.

Gotta love the New NHL. Three different players scoring hat tricks, lots of scoring with the exception of the CAL-OTT game. What a hit by D. Phaneuf on D. Hamel, it'll be on D. Cherry's next rock'em, sock'em video for sure.

The new-look Wild are off to the best start in franchise history, posting a 4-0 record. They've won their past two games in a shootout--watch out for Miko Koivu in those!--and the other two victories were pretty dramatic as well.

The all-Slovak line, headlined by Gaborik and Demitra, has been an instant-hit. Those guys are fun to watch out there.

It's funny that there's debate over whether Pittsburgh is a good enough hockey town and whether new owner Jim Balsillie will move the franchise to Ontario when one considers that only 8,008 fans showed up at the United Center in Chicago to watch the vastly improved Blackhawks play Nashville, one of the top teams in the league.

Maybe Balsillie should have bought the Blackhawks and moved them to Ontario. What a joke. Chicago sports fans should be embarrassed.

It is embarassing but trust me when they start to consistently win the crowd will be back. This town is starved for a winning hockey team. When the pretty successful AHL team is able to practically sell out while the pro team is getting 8,000 you know the fan base is there. Having the worst owner in all of North American sports is not fun. If the Hawks continue to play well throughout the season and make the playoffs the fans will be back. I like what Tallon has been able to do towards the end of last season and in the offseason. Holding Nashville to 1 goal last night is pretty impressive. If Khabibulin can continue to play like he did last night it should be a good season for the Hawks.

Then how do you explain the Rangers, who still damn near sold out MSG every game despite missing the playoffs for seven consecutive seasons from 1997-04? Or Edmonton, which sold out Northlands consistently during its dry run in the mid-90s despite being in a MUCH smaller market than Chicago?

I would buy into your statement if maybe 14,000 showed up. But we're talking HALF-CAPACITY for the barn in a city of more than 3 million people.

CAD owner Balsillie's intention is to keep the team in PITT only if a new arena will be built. G. Bettman also stated the same but no one is taking any steps toward the new building which Mario has been fighting for years.
Everyone thought that Hamilton would be the perfect fit, but I think TOR and BUF would not like it. If they ever move the franchise to a Canadian city, I think Winnipeg, Halifax and Quebec would be candidates.

This is a very exciting Pittsburgh's team to watch, just wait until E.Malkin gets back. They'll be the team to beat in a couple more seasons.

About CHI's situation, 8008 people watching their team is sad, especially when you have one of the most talented players in M. Havlat (after all they paid big bucks for this guy this season, and OTT misses him). They are an improved team but I don't think they'll make into the playoffs.

Canucks opener tonight, vs one of the top teams, SJ, (they'll be pissed after blowing that lead to EDM).

I thought the issue with the Hawks was always the extreme cheap-o ownership. Without knowing all the details, his frugal ways ran a decent team into an absolute laughing stock. At least when the Rangers missed the playoffs all those year they were trying, bringing in big guns like Jagr and Lindros.

Still, 8k is disappointing no doubt. That is embarrassingly low, and the team has taken a much more promising direction since the lockout.

You'd have to be here to truly understand the whole picture. It's easy to cast judgement from the outside but you really have to live here to understand just how much Bill Wirtz is hated around here. Home games are not broadcast on tv here. Even if I ordered Center Ice the home games will still be blacked out. The lack of support is more than just the losing, it's the ownership.

Scary moment at the Penguin game tonight with Trevor Letowski being taken away on a stretcher in the first period after being knocked unconscious on a hit by Colby Armstrong, he was out cold from the hit then his face hit the ice when he went down and when the trainer came out he lifted his head up and there was a pool of blood on the ice. Early reports are that he had a gash on his forehead and is ok, but wow it looked really nasty when it happened.

Pens lost 5-1 and didn't look good at all against the Hurricanes. Supposedly Malkin will be ready to play sometime this upcoming week, possibly as early as their next game on Wednesday against New Jersey.
