Wrong thread...that's for the NHL 07 review. This is the 2k7 thread. Confusing, I know.
That's a hellova score...seems to me the reviewer is way too caught up in the whole right stick thing...and of course, no mention of gameplay AI at all except for the offsides being strict (huh?...you are or you aren't). The 8.7 doesn't tell me much except that the reviewer is happy with the right stick situation.
"The developers were hoping for the same kind of organic gameplay that Konami accomplished with its Winning Eleven soccer franchise. In that, EA succeeded."

That's a heckava quote. We shall see in 2 days!
I just posted the same quote in an NHL07 thread Jack! Pretty large statement when Winning Eleven's gameplay is mentioned. Color me anxious.
"In playing the NHL 2k series online for literally hundreds and hundreds of games in structured leagues, I found that good defense involves NOT trying to challenge forwards at the blue line and instead skating backwards while poke checking/sweeping the stick, always keeping your defender between the goalie and puckhandler to help block shots and prevent a 1 on 1 with the goalie. "
Maybe you never played hockey at a high level as a defenseman as I have. You NEVER allow a guy with the puck to skate in that close while trying to poke check or sweep the puck, especially with another D man back. Always try to meet them at the blue line and make the change thier course to the outside. That's realistic hockey.
Unless it's a 2 on 1, that's the ONLY time you should do what you describe.
Cinemotion and the speed of the gameplay are my only gripes from the demo. I mean on EA's game I am sure that you would know it's P. Laviolette doing the pep talk in the dressing room but who does the CAR coach look like in the demo? E. Staal looks fine but there are others where their features don't come close to their true resemblance.
Back to the skating, I like the faceoff winner actually turning his body into his opponent, and using his shoulders to shield him while sending the puck back to one of the D-men. I don't remember seeing that detail in a hockey game. Also, the transition between getting a pass, and then skating again was cool, and it's the little things that like that I like about the new skating engine.
Did I mention how much I love the new camera angle?

I don't believe that I mentioned using the strategy in REAL hockey, did I? "I playing the NHL 2k series online".... I'm strictly talking about playing good defense in 2k hockey, that's all.

I'm also talking about the game, comparing it to real hockey. The CPU defense does exactly what you do, keeps backing up keeping his body between you and the goalie. All this does in the game is screen the goalie so if you swoosh and shoot around the D man it's a goal.
Right, and I still stand by my comment that in this video game, that's the best defense against the swoop (along with sweeping the stick and trying to poke check with the defender as you drift backwards). Trying to get the puke in open ice at the blue line is a sure-fire way to leave your goalie out to dry.
Against the AI defenders, I can't say much about that as I can count the number of times that I've played the AI in a full game on one hand. It's all about online for me.
