This story has fallen off the front sports page because the TC is over but for those that follow this sport, Barbaro's condition has taken a pretty severe turn for the worse.

After readng that, his chance of survival is in all honesty pretty slim, Laminitis is a serious condition.

I saw this on CNN yesterday and was very sad. They have gone to such extremes to save this horse and now this. Have horses ever recovered
from Laminitis?

I don't want to jinx anything but Yahoo's reporting he's "doing much better" this morning:

This past week or so the first thing I've been doing when I turn my computer on when I get to work is check on how he's doing. It's been quite a rollercoaster ride from one day to the next.

I hope he pulls through.

The Deadspin comments thread is priceless.

Very sad news indeed. the owners and the horse have been through so much since that horrible accident and this is just devastating news. Hopefully a lot was learned in all the procedures they tried with Barbaro that will be used to save other horses lives in the future. He was a fighter, that's for sure.

Horses are put down all the time in thoroughbred racing. In a given year at a major track dozens are put down. The only reason Barbaro wasn't put down on the spot was that he won the Derby and was worth a fortune in breeding.

They really need to make some changes to make this "sport of kings" safer. maybe leave more time in between the 3 triple crown races.
look into safer track surfaces to race on...like they are doing iin Kentucky.
Also, maybe wait untill the horses are 4 years old. Seems like a lot of stress to put on a 3 year old horse. I read somewhere that over 300 horses were put down in CA alone last year. That's way too much.
This sport is all for our amusement and gambling, so we should do everything to make sure the horses are as safe as possible.

Horse and rider injuries are the sports' dirty little secrets.Since major media and the general public take in exactly 3 races per year it stays that way.
The industry also has powerful PR to ensure the most genteel image.
