Correct. In Mountain time. Same as Denver.

Indeed. He'll be recycled, lead a team to instant improvement yet failure in the playoffs, grow at odds with his GM or players, see his team fall out of the playoffs and be fired.

We've seen it all before, right?

Say what you want about the old dude, but he's one of the coaches that has the highest winning %, albeit never to win a Stanley Cup. But then again they are a lot of coaches in that same boat.

Quinn will coach again no doubt, his weakness is that he's loyal to his players to a fault. But one thing I like about Pat is his coaching philosophy, that Hockey should be a fast open tempo game, no muggins or clutchings, and all the teams that he coached, played that way.

You're kidding right? Just look to the pre-lockout Leafs. When playing against a speedy team (eg. Ottawa) it's just clutch and grab baby! Brian McCabe was the MASTER. Shane Corson as well.

Yeah, I don't get that assessment of Quinn, either. Everyone gives him credit for being such a wide-open, offensive coach.

Well, if you have Pavel Bure at the height of his power in your lineup in Vancouver, you let him rip. Any imbecile would do that!

If Toronto was such a speed team, then why did it bring the monolithic Eric Lindros to town? Granted, I know Ferguson is GM, but did Quinn have no say?

And look at the size of the Leafs' forwards this year. From a September 2005 story from NHL.com:

>>>Make no mistake about it, the Maple Leafs are big up front with center Jason Allison at 222 pounds; center Eric Lindros, 235; center Mats Sundin, 231; center Nik Antropov, 230; left wing Chad Kilger, 224; left wing Alexei Ponikarovsky, 220; right wing Nathan Perrott, 225; and right wing Tie Domi, 212. Swingman Wade Belak weighs in at 221.<<<

OK, there are big guys who can skate. But the Leafs were old and slow this year. Period.

Take care,
PK

Why do so many right handed people play hockey left handed? Don't know if there's an official stat but it seems like 60% of hockey players play left handed.

I can't verify the accuracy of this claim, but I was told in Canada they teach kids to play 'backwards' from how Americans pick up and learn because it's better to have your strong hand (aka throwing hand) on top of the stick, not down low.

James, where exactly did the Leafs stand prior to the P. Quinn era? In those years which team in the Eastern conference didn't grab and clutch? What I am saying is that he brought respectability to a franchise that was the joke of town. And the play he installed in the team was more fun to watch from a fan point of view. Ask any player in the NHL and they'll play for a Coach like Quinn anytime, but like I said before, his fault is that he's too loyal to his group, and that includes players and coaches.

Don't get me wrong, I believe Toronto needed a change of air badly but that includes J. Ferguson Jr. Bringing players like the often injured E. Lindros (although he was a nice addition before his injury) and J. Allison. Oh and how about bringing another oldie in Richarson for Klee. That's moving forward? I hate the Leafs.

If you're going to clean house, start from the source of the fire and IMO that starts with the GM.

Don't know if this has been posted, but Pavel Datsyuk is likely to miss the Wings' opener with the Oilers.

I'm not saying P. Quinn wasn't good for the leafs during his run, but I don't think he was the anti-clutch/grab guy that you played him up to be.. that's all.

I'm not 100% sure the leafs should have gotten rid of the GM. Talk radio around here (and their supposed insiders) claim that the GM really wanted to go for younger, speedier style for the "new" NHL but that there was too much friction with Quinn who wanted to stick to older players.. hence they ended up with the likes of Allison. Ferguson did spend some energy beefing up the scouting and farm team for sure.. he is focussing on something that Quinn did not excel at.

Again, I don't know for sure.. I really don't care THAT much as long as the leafs stink/don't make the playoffs I'm happy! (Sorry Leafs fans.. I hat your team as much as you hate mine, the Senators). It's on the radio all the time around here so I hear stuff about it.

Grew up playing hockey here in Canada, and now my kids are playing. Neither myself or my friends were taught this way and I don't know of any parents or coaches on my kids team that do this. It MIGHT be the case for some... but it's not widespread as far as I can tell.

I'm right handed and when I muck around with a street hockey stick I play right handed and would be hopless playing left handed. I would have no power or lift in my shots at all. For the past couple of years the Flyers have struggled to put right-handed shots on the point on the Power Play because Desjardins was injured a lot. And an all left-handed Power play is not ideal.

James, I saw that piece of info on TSN's sportsdesk too about the friction between Ferguson & Quinn. If there was a clash between both, Ferguson as GM should have fired Quinn last year. Who's the boss anyways? If this was too be a younger Leaf team, a J. Ferguson team, I would have started with my own players despite of what the coach says, instead of dragging season holders and fans for another hopeless year.

In any case, Leaf nation will see a younger team for sure now, not that I care, but your SENS better not choke this time around.

With Forsberg in the lineup the Flyers are a legit threat. Without him they could easily be shown the door in the first round. Esche needs to step up. Ever since he started playing with a chip on his shoulder a few weeks ago he has been great. We all know how far a hot goalie can take a team in the beautiful NHL playoffs. Its gonna be fun to see some nut-cutting OT games in the playoffs for the first time in two years...WooHoo!!

Most agree that goaltending is the key to winning the Cup. If that's the case, then I'm more confident in my pick of Calgary after seeing how hot the already superb Kiprusoff has been lately:

>>>Goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff of Calgary, a leading candidate for the Vezina Trophy, went 2-0-1 with two shutouts and a 0.32 goals-against average in his final three games of the regular season.<<<

F*cking Flames hoist the mug. Damn it.

The Kiper is a tough goalie to beat, but if there's an upset in the 1st round I have Calgary going down in 7. Giguere is no slouch either as he finished the season strong. It'll be the battle of the goalies. If Calgary wins they must keep the relentless pounding at players like Selanne & S. Niedermayer. It'll be a pounding series.

That's what I was told when I was a kid in Detroit.

But they teach it differently in some areas; I moved to Ohio and 90% of the kids were right-hand shots.

PK, I think you also described Mike Keenan, except that Keenan likes to reduce the franchise to shambles before he is tossed.
