Randy (Flyermania) has made the best slider settings for 2K hockey since NHL 2K5. Really good if you play straight-up, sim hockey.

Take care,

Wow PK, I didn't even check his sliders but when compared to mine I only had these differences.

Period: 6 minutes
Game Speed: 10
Goalie skill: 20/20
Pass Accuracy: 60/30
Rebound:30/30
Pass Inter: 90/60

Still I'd like the CPU shots to be less than the 40+, at times even 50+ that they are averaging.

Yep, that's the only problem with Randy's sliders that I'm trying to solve. In around 10 games with them, I've outshot the CPU only once.

The CPU is getting anywhere between 32-45 shots per game with these sliders despite me playing solid positional defense and using Pro Control stick moves to block passing lanes.

I think the CPU ratings for puck control and puck retention are too high with Randy's settings compared to those for the human team. But dropping those sliders to be more equal with the human creates some problems because I think the higher puck control and puck retention ratings for the CPU help reduce the CPU's reliance on one-timers.

If the CPU can hold the puck in its offensive zone, it will skate around and look for a shot after receiving some passes. If it can't hold the puck in the zone, it will snap a one-timer as soon as it receives the puck.

I'm going to try to find a happy medium, puck control and puck retention settings for the CPU and human that strike some sort of balance between proper shot totals and a fairly realistic number of one-timers. I don't know if I'll find something perfect, but I think I can get close.

Take care,
PK

Have you guys tried Flyermania's sliders off his Web site? They're pro, but I'm finding them pretty tough and seemingly more fair than the All-Stars. The one thing driving me nuts, and it seems to be less of a problem on Pro, is the constant cracks in the back the CPU dishes out that knock you off balance. It's annoying, you don't see it happen in hockey, and it basically allows them to knock you off the puck when they're two steps behind.

Yep. Those actually are tinpanalley's sliders that Randy (Flyermania) posted on his site. Ironically, Randy's sliders only are posted at 2khockey.net, not his site!

I much prefer Randy's All-Star sliders to tinpanalley's Pro sliders. Tinpan's have crummy fatigue settings, as you never see your fourth line. There are too many penalties, and the high goalie saves ratings leads to "stonewall" goalies and low scores like we had in ESPN NHL 2K4.

I don't know if I missed it earlier in this gargantuan thread, but anyone else express their love for the PSP version of NHL? I'm finding franchise very very sweet with a few slider tweaks. Highly recommended in my book and worlds better than the awful Gretzky series (which probably isn't saying all that much).

I will try these out, pk, thanks for the advice. Along with Sully, I also want to know if these translate well gameplay-wise to the 360. In addition to me playing on 8-10 minute periods, I hope I can keep shot totals down.

Yep, playing the PSP version still although it's a totally different game than the Next-Gen. It's definitely more on the arcade side but it's the only Hockey game for the PSP this year.

I've been playing it quite a lot as well. At first I thought it was too easy to score but after messing with the sliders I'm having a lot of fun with 5-minute periods in my dynasty.

What do you know, after tweaking indefinitely with the sliders in 2K7, I decided to go with the CPU SIM on default which is on All stars and the % of shots was much more respectable to todays' new NHL standard. Sure the game speed and speed burst time was too high for my taste, but I had an entertaining tie that went into OT, then SO.

And speaking of SO, EA is way better in this department as it took finally the 14th player to score.

Anyone got any shootout tips for NHL07? I had a tie game last night go into a S.O. and it took the CPU about 15 shooters to put one in the net. I was just hopeless. Seems awfully hard to deke the goalie and score. Should I just try and shoot from the high slot instead? What % can you guys score on shootout attempts?

One of my few complaints about the game, the CPU just doesn't score in the shootout. I've only had them score once in 4 shootouts. For me i typically can end it with my first three shooters but did go to a sixth once. And no, shooting from the slot has not worked as far as i can tell. One word of advice, don't make too many moves. Drag to a side, let the goalie commit, then pull it back and go top shelf or slide it through the pads as he's sliding back over.

Also, sorry about not responding last night, didn't even see the invite til i was jumping off.

Well, I'm back to undecided on the NHL games. LOL...I've started to get bored of NHL actually because I know it's not the best simulation in the back of my mind, so I keep wondering why I'm playing it, when I'm playing it. So now I'm renting 2k7 again...LOL. This is ridiculous. I just wish it was as cut and dry as the NBA games are this year. That would make it a hellova lot easier to pick.

Don't feel bad DB. I bought NHL 07, talked the manager into an even trade for NHL 2k7, went back and bought NHL 07 after trading in Madden, then traded NHL 07 in for TW 07. :)

After all was said and done, I'm happy with 2k7. NHL 07 is a great experience, but I became bored after 20-30 games and after I went back to 2k7, I just finally decided it was the better "overall" NHL experience.. BUT not by much and I can see where people take NHL 07 over 2k's game.

I'm making good progress with my tweaks to Randy's current-gen NHL 2K7 sliders, for the three of us here still on the Xbox who play hockey games. :)

The CPU is getting fewer shots, and the results still feel pretty random. I have tested them with three games. I want to get at least another four or five games under my belt with them before making any sort of conclusions.

So far, so good. I'll keep you posted.

Take care,
PK

Paul, have you tried the default SIM on the Xbox, and if so what kind of results are you getting? I tried it on the 360 and the shots were in the early 30's which is fine, albeit the speed of the game is too quick for me.

James:

I have tried the default sim. Shots are fine, but there aren't enough blocked shots, the speed is too fast, and there aren't enough penalties.

I jusy tried the 2K7 demo and I was blown away. What a year this is for hockey gamers! I played about 15 striaght demo periods. This is by far the best 2K hockey game they ever made. You can finally hear the sound effects on the ice. The gameplay is so smooth and the new camera angle is incredible. The gameplay remains similiar to 2K games of the past, but that is a good thing IMO. The only thing I miss is the ability to manually deke. Wasn't there a way to fo that in past 2K games?
The cinemotion thing I thought was well done, but I could see it might get old after a while. There is no pbp in the demo, so I cant comment on that.

What a perplexing decision it is for those who have to pick one game. I certainly can't and plan on playing both.

Well, it's official. Scoop and I experimented in EA's game with the shot accuracy and power settings for online games with the 'custom' rules option, and we are convinced: the game uses the host's offline sliders for online games when using 'custom' rules. Great news!

I've been playing the 2K7 demo quite a bit in anticipation of my ebay copy's arrival. I've been enjoying it tremendously and I'm pretty bummed my copy didn't arrive today. Ironically, playing a lot of EA's NHL has actually made me better at scoring in 2K7 and in a ton of different ways. I'm so used to not trying one-timers that I don't do them much at all now and this afternoon almost all my goals were not one-timers.

Scoop and I had a GREAT online game of 07 last night. He mentioned it in a message and I agree: it's great to play a game where you absolutely dread a defensive mistake that gives up a breakaway. You can't play reckless and get away with much.

Awesome game, Scoop!

I am really enjoying NHL07 but it definitley has major issues with regard to the way the AI spaces the players. Often you will see 2 or 3 defensive players following around a puck carrier like he is the Pied Piper. Also on offense, your own players rarely get into the open passing lanes and too often just bunch up near the puck. This problem is the biggest flaw in the game, IMO and keeps the gameplay from surpassing 2K's. Even with this issue, the game is still a blast to play due to the skill stick and the puck physics. If EA can improve on this area next year, they will really have something.
