Even Apple doesn't control the law; the REACT task force chases down 'technology espionage' on a daily basis, and you can be sure the DA (an elected position after all) doesn't mind all of the press being generated by the stolen iPhone story, might be good for reelection to appear in the news nightly.
Apple didn't make the cops go to Gizmodo, although they certainly did report that they had been contacted about a phone they believe was stolen.
Even as a fanboy, I can tell you that Apple is great at 'controlling the story' when it comes to their products, and i mean that in the cynical sense where they make sure you hear what they want, when they want. For that reason, I'm willing to bet Apple would be happier if the press surrounding this phone were to stop (not to prolong the coverage by encouraging dramatic search and seizure). You were 'SUPPOSED' to be talking about the iPad 3G launch tomorrow, the iPhone OS4, the iPad million units sold. All this talk about the phone distracts from the message Apple wants in the headlines UNTIL they announce the phone. That's the point of all their secrecy; so only Apple suffers by the continued drama of the Gizmodo story.
Just a thought. Flame on!

The phone wasn't stolen. An Apple engineer left it at a bar. The possible criminal element arose when the dude who found the phone at the bar then sold it to Gizmodo for $5,000.Sport73 wrote:Even Apple doesn't control the law; the REACT task force chases down 'technology espionage' on a daily basis, and you can be sure the DA (an elected position after all) doesn't mind all of the press being generated by the stolen iPhone story, might be good for reelection to appear in the news nightly.

That could be interpreted as stolen property by California law because the phone didn't belong to the finder. But the guy didn't pilfer it from anyone's pocket or break into the Apple gulag to get the phone. Some dipshit Apple engineer -- I know, that phrase is an oxymoron to you

But you're right: This is priceless PR for Apple, a company that is awash in good vibes and spin right now.

I work for a software company. If I got hammered & left our unreleased product in a bar and some website got it, I guarantee my company would pull out all the stops to get it back. Ain't nothing new about that in tech biz. Believe it. To think Apple is unique here is crazy talk.pk500 wrote:The phone wasn't stolen. An Apple engineer left it at a bar. I'm sure it wasn't that hard for Apple. All it probably had to do was ask. Do you think the lemmings at Gizmodo were about to risk losing all access to Apple, to getting shut out? Plus if the phone determined to be stolen property by law, Gizmodo has to return it.greggsand wrote:I work for a software company. Gizmodo already was on fairly dubious legal ground by buying an unreleased product on the black market.
Plus I understand that the smartphone market is insanely competitive. I wonder what happened to that Apple engineer? Sent on a bit of a "vacation," perhaps?

Jobs is bashing Flash and it's his prerogative to decline to support a certain tech in his products.pk500 wrote:Bill Gates is working to eradicate disease throughout the world. Meanwhile, Steve Jobs is bashing Adobe, and his paranoid Apple minions are browbeating a tech blog to return a prototype iPhone that was errantly left in a coffee shop.
So, which dude and which company are Big Brother and the Evil Empire now?
MS left a trail of crushed companies in its wake, "cutting off their air supply." That is how they maintained 90% market share in OS and Office, while Apple has at best 20% in smart phones, which is a small slice (though very profitable one) of the cell phone market.
MS meanwhile embraced and extended other peoples tech, like Kerberos, or were found to have stolen IP, like the Stac compression case.
Both men are legendary for being difficult bosses and shabby behavior in their personal lives.
But you're right, Gates has pledged most of his fortune to bettering the world whereas I don't think Jobs will ever be so generous. There was a piece recently about his efforts to eradicate polio which suffered a big setback as the disease spiked up in some developing countries. He's going to Nigeria to persuade some Muslim sultan to tell Muslims that polio vaccine is good for them.
He could have stayed in his mansion and just wrote a check. I think his efforts are misdirected but his intentions seem pure.
However, it's not always clear cut that these tycoons' professional and personal behavior line up the same way. Some of the greatest philanthropists of the 20th century were robber barons in the 19th or early 20th centuries, who amassed the huge fortunes they gave away by crushing other businesses, in ways more heavy-handed than anything these tech companies have done.

And the irony of Gates is that he had to make a lot of money before he could give his billions away. It's like giving away money makes MS former business practices okay.
I think what we are seeing is an anti-apple sentiment growing more than Apple using bad business practices like MS. People are growing to hate Apple for reasons I don't know why. They make good, expensive, luxury items. Chris Hardwick of G4 said it best, you don't any of this stuff from a TV to a phone to a computer.
And in contrast to MS, Apple has a better history than MS of delivering products that work, are well-designed and seem to evolve the personal device market. Can't say that about too many MS products in the past, the latest windows and the zune may be the current exceptions.
But I'm disappointed to see MS's Courier bite the dust. I have to admit that it did look promising!

huh? Windows 95 worked great, as was 98 SE, then XP. Some of the interim releases are sketchy, and Vistas sucked. Apple has always been overpriced and the myth perpetuated by their fanboys that "it works better". Apple makes good products and I am impressed by iPad enough that I bought one (my first Apple product), but most of the time, you can find a similar product that works just as well (if not better) that cost less.JRod wrote: And in contrast to MS, Apple has a better history than MS of delivering products that work, are well-designed and seem to evolve the personal device market. But I will readily admit that Apple has a much better Industrial Design team than probably every other tech company out there.
The most impressive thing about Apple is how they can get people to connect with their electronics on an emotional level. When I went to the apple store, I have never seen a bunch of people happier buying gadgets.

They dont need me to get it and I dont need to get it. They just keep on rolling.
God bless em.... They are good for all of us.
They drive the tech and the ideas forward which begets competition which begets lower more affordable pricing and better more complete 2nd gen products from all of them.
EDIT: In the end it is that promise of an improved product from Apple or a kick ass knock off that has kept me away so far. It is not easy though. Reading the impressions can be maddening...I want the newest coolest stuff too

All the classics are free and any that's public domain. Thought I don't know if that's what Dan is tlaking about. I like the regular apple case. You can fold it into a variety of different positions for use. The material does feel a bit fuzzy to me which I didn't like at first but it does seem to provide a bit of extra (and necessary) grip while using. I also bought an "incase" sleeve but haven't used it once since I picked up the Apple jacket.Danimal wrote:Just got mine via work.

A lot of people love the Belkin Vue, but it's $50 and doesn't give you a different angle for viewing. It's simply a rubberized skin. I too have the Apple case, and what inevitably sold me was the added angle (especially when sitting at a table or desk) along with the cover. It folds over like a folder when not in use, thus protecting it if someone should spill something directly on it, and also keeps it clean from dust. It's not perfect by any means, but it's the best I've seen.
I should also add if you prefer using the Ipad in landscape mode like I do, then you can't go wrong with the Apple case. If you're someone who prefers portrait mode, then you might not prefer this case.

I like the Belkin Vue (clear) but I also bought the Hard Candy Bubble Case for storage and travel purposes. I got the idea from a case review on YouTube. That's a lot of cash combined for cases, but I feel like I have the best of both worlds. A friend of mine brought in the Apple case and it just seemed cheap, thin, and full of lint. When I am viewing or typing while sitting at a table I just prop the iPad up on the case a bit. I love the grip on the Belkin Vue and also the fact that while in use I'm not covering up my sleek and sexy $600 device.
I absolutely love the iPad and I can't see ever buying another laptop...at least an expensive one. I've noticed some of the Internet sites that used to give me the Flash logo are now iPad friendly. I also think the extra screen space is great for watching MLB, TV, movies or using apps such as Piano/music apps that benefit from a much larger screen. A desktop good enough to do some rudimentary video editing along with the iPad and the LogMeIn app that would allow me to access any desktop apps would work fine. My Macbook is now collecting dust.

I ended up buying the' in-case' neoprene case but would like to add the Apple case for the different angles that you can play with. So far they're sold out, including the BB stores I went to.

I bought two cases.
A hard candy bubble case. Great for protecting it if you play to use it naked and protect it in a bag or something.
And I have this one on order. I wanted something to use at a coffee show or on the road. It looks like a Moleskin which is why I got it.

I bought the apple case and returned it. It has a stupid lining that sticks out right along all the edges of the case, right where you put your hands. It softens over time but I thought it was just an annoyance.
