Wii officially $250 on Nov. 19

Seems like around here the only way to get one is to be in the right place at the right time.
Everyone I've spoken with states that they don't know when they get shipments or how many they will get do to them being directly shipped from the big N to the actual store location.
While I was out yesterday hitting store after store in search of one of these things I did my own little unofficial poll whie speaking with the store workers.
I pretty much just asked someone at each store which system had been in higher demand, the Wii or the PS3. Each store stated that they are getting more calls and walk-ins looking for the Wii. A few of the stores made it a point to mention that it's not even close.
It would seem that Nintendo has really hit a homerun with the Wii. At least in the early goings anyway.

Yeah I noticed that as well. I walk into best Buy or Target and I see a prominent Wi display and a 360 display, I have to actually look for the PS3 area.PRBoom wrote: It would seem that Nintendo has really hit a homerun with the Wii. At least in the early goings anyway.
It's still a shame that they can't release a system without such shortages (they meaning everyone) but what can you do.

NYers: it looks like the big TRU in Times Square and the Nintendo store at Rockerfeller Plaza are the ways to go. I hear the NIN store gets some in every day, but the lines start early and they are out by mid-morning.
TRU however seems to get shipments in occasionally, maybe twice a week or so. But when they get them, they get a lot, like a thousand of them or so. I decided to stop by there on my way home from Penn Station yesterday afternoon at about 4:30, and there was a line out the door. They had them in, and were letting people through about 15 at a time, giving tickets until they ran out. One girl in line said she had a friend who worked there that let her know they were in. It took maybe 45 minutes total for me once I got in line. They were selling them from the first thing in the morning, and apparently there were no lines at all in the AM. I was able to get one even though I got in line just before 5pm, so if you figure they sell about 100-150 an hour, that's still a long time to move 1,000 units.
All I can say is try to head by the store occasionally, and see if they have them in. No one at the store really knew much other than that they get them occasionally and they get a lot when they do.
Good luck!

Seems like an interesting and entertaining game. I'm not a big golf sim gamer, so this game might just be what I'm looking for.Zlax45 wrote:Decent review for that new golf game

I waited a while for mine and had to hit Circuit City Sunday a.m. around 6:15 to land it. I have to say, i was skeptical about this system and what it brought to the table. I admit to getting caught up in the hype and part of me was wondering if all the hub-bub was going to be worth it when it ended up in the house. I can honestly say that it was worth the wait. For those of you looking for one, if you have a wife/family it's a great system. My wife NEVER touched a video game in her life, and i've owned many and have been with her since 1991, and last night i got her on it. Saying she's hooked may be a bit much, but when this email came through this morning i looked toward the Nintendo gods and said thanks:
She wrote "Gee, my arm is really sore today. Must be from all those fastballs i blew past you last night."
She beat me 5-2 in baseball. Granted i was just tossing 64 mph fastballs at her. But anyway, we both had a great laugh when my 3 year old's Mii stepped up to the plate in a 2-2 game, i laughed and said watch me blow this 94 mph heater past Erin, and *BAM* next thing i know the ball is in the upper deck, i lose 5-2.
This system is just plain family fun. Very happy i finally got one and to those looking, if i come across one i will pick it up and let you guys know.

As an update to my WiiSports opinions earlier, let me say the following:
Bowling - I've upped my high score to 204, but I've had several games in the 130-150 range. As it turns out, it's possible to hit funks as well as hot streaks.
Baseball - After going homerless for about 3 games, I ripped 6 in my last game. As baseball is the least 'sim' of all of the games, I'm not sure I mind so much as it will probably get the least amount of play.
Golf - This is a game that I could really get into if it were repackaged in the vein of a Tiger Woods with multiple courses, etc. After struggling through trying to match my swing to the meter, I've nearly disregarded the meter for anything but aim and am taking my cuts strictly based upon the 'feel' of my position and I'm having far more success. I've only played through the 'basic' game (3-holes) and the 9-hole full game. Basic teaches you to control your swing so you don't exceed the meter. Exceeding the meter results in hooks and slices. In the full game, using this logic I started the first hole with a drive just under the meter max and was rewarded with a significant hooking shot into the rough. It seemed that my careless grip was reflected in this shot, but I need to do more testing to make sure it wasn't wind or some other factor. Perhaps the other two 3-hole difficulty levels can shed some light on this as well.

I'm waving the white flag on getting a Wii before Christmas. I refuse to stand in line for more than an hour for the priviledge to spend $250 of my money.
I got to Wal Mart this morning at 7am (8am sale), and they had already given out tickets for the 31 they got in. The people in line were either college kids, soccer moms, or grandparents. I bet over half the people getting one don't even know what it is.
Oh well. Other than Wii Sports, the only other games out right now that intrigue me are Madden and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. The new golf game coming out looks a little too cartoony for me. I don't see much else coming down the pipe until March. At least I can take solace in that
If I happen upon one, I'l get it. That is, unless I cave and get a 360. The 360 still doesn't have the pull on me I thought it would by now. My best excuse for one right now is Smackdow vs Raw. Maden is a bust, MLB is a bust, and NCAA look slike a trade off rather than an upgrade. I don't care for FPS (other than SW Battlefront), so there goes half the 360 library.
This has been a frustrating season. I am finally ready to jump into the next gen, but other than the impossible to find Wii, no console is pulling me in right now.

I went to Walmart this morning around 6:30 and was number nine in line. I was thinking there was no way I was leaving without a system. Then the manager came out and said they only had six systems!?! Oh well, I'll keep checking the online trackers but I'm guessing it will be after Christmas before I get one.

That's a kick in the balls mix. Sorry man. I have to think there was some employee hoarding going on because Walmart has been receiving these things since last Monday or Tuesday and just waiting for this "release" today. I'm sure you'll bump into one soon. Good luck.I went to Walmart this morning around 6:30 and was number nine in line. I was thinking there was no way I was leaving without a system. I would stay away from MUA. It is an okay game, but not worth $50. In fact, it gets alittle too long and I wish it would have ended one act earlier (there are 5 acts in the game). Worth a rental but that's about it. Plus, it is not really a "next-gen" title. Even the 360 version is just a better looking game.matthewk wrote: Oh well. I refused to get in line this morning and I'm glad i didn't. there were 20+ people in line this morning starting at like 3am and the Walmart had 4 systems.
I'm f***in done looking for this thing, I can play one at work so there is no need to rush anymore. Besides the only game worth playing (for me) is bowling.
Also matt, Smackdown vs Raw is pretty damm good. I guess i wasn't expecting much out of it being the first time on the 360, but I find it an excellent game.

I got a chance to put in some quality time with G7's Wii last night, and figured I'd throw up a couple of comments.
G7 covered Wii sports well in his post, so I won't spend much time there. My favorites were bowling and golf. I found myself figuring that I could 'do better' by minimizing hand motions and such but quickly dismissing that notion because it was by far just more fun to 'get up and bowl' or mess around with different batting stances.
Bowling in particular feels incredibly natural and in my opinion was the easiest to pick up out of all of the games. I could easily see myself doing that one over and over again to shoot for my high score. All in all, these games were pretty much exactly what I expected: Very fun in smaller bites, but not necessarily something I can see myself playing for extended playtimes. However, I do think they present a very promising picture of the types of things that can be done with the controller, and by doing that they achieve exactly what they set out to do.
Zelda was more interesting to me in that while the control scheme was certainly not like anything I had encountered before, it very, very quickly seemed pretty natural to me. I thought there would be a much greater learning curve, but both the controllers themselves and the motions and button presses used in the game felt comfortable to me in a very short period of time. That impressed me.
The observation that struck me the most, though, was that although I loved using the controls to perform the various swordfight maneuvers in combat and use the slingshot while on horseback on such, I hated -*hated* using the sword shake for more mundane activities such as the frequent 'grass-cutting' you need to do to search for hearts and rupees and such. Constantly shaking the controller in such situations was very annoying to me, and it started me to thinking that the controller motions that are the calling card for the system might be best used only when they tie to the core mechanics of the game being played. In other words, only 'shake it' for the important stuff...not the mundane. In the Wii Sports titles, each action is at the core of the gameplay. In Zelda, it felt great for swordfighting an enemy or enemies, but lousy for cutting grass. In the former situation it made me feel more a part of the experience, in the latter it felt like an extra hoop through which I had to jump.
I think developers might need to look at that carefully. Sometimes a button press might be good enough. I'd be happy to sweep around a lightsaber to decapitate droids, for instance, but if I have to make a grand sweeping motion to open every door in a Resident Evil type game...not so fun.
I think the system is a perfect complement to a more traditional system like the 360 or ps3, and I'll get one when they are easy enough to find. I'm sold, but not 'camp out like a lunatic' sold.
I'm cool with picking it up a couple of months down the line.
Fun time to be a gamer, for sure.

I saw a Wii!!! I saw a Wii!!! Unfortunately I was one minute too late. They had them for sale at Frys today but I was too late. It's probably a blessing though since they were forcing a bundle with 5 games. I still hold out hope that I'll find one by Christmas but that hope is dwindling by the minute.
I am a patient boy.
I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait.
My time is water down a drain.

Interesting, there are some Wiis (Wiis? Or Wii. What is the plural of Wii?) on craiglist here in Toronto. I talked to a seller (it was gone by the time I called) and he mentione he had 4 wii and 2 PS3 initially, and had only 1PS3 left for sale. I asked how got them... he said he works at Best Buy, and his cousin works at Walmart and that's how he got'em.RallyMonkey wrote:That's a kick in the balls mix. Sorry man. So i ventured away from Wii Sports long enough to get into a game of Madden and, graphics aside, it was the most enjoyable game of Madden i've played in years. This system takes my favorite gaming inovation of the past few years, NHL 07's shot stick, to the next level. The feeling of control over nearly every aspect of the game is just plain fun. Now let me qualify these statements by saying that i did not see any overthrows or underthrows in the passing game and that could be problematic to the SIM folks (although in the game's defense it was only about 6 quarters right out of the box so maybe they're in there in non-default difficulty). But here's the thing that i like the most. With the need to really concentrate on using the numchuk and WiiMote as well as looking for the right receiver, this game almost forces you to use the pocket the way it's intended. It's not that rolling out isn't possible, it is, but much like real football it comes under appropriate situations.
My Wii experience, both with my family and solo, has been great so far. I just picked up Zelda and can't wait to jump in.

I received the component cables today, however I can't figure out how to make it widescreen. It automatically defaults to 4:3 and no what I try (change the settings to 16:9, etc.), it still stays in 4:3.
I have two sets of the green, blue, and red inputs (YPbPR1 and YPbPR2). One set connects from the HD DVR receiver to the tv, and the other connects from the 360 to the tv. Then, I have a set of AV inputs, but they're only the red, white, and yellow inputs.
Any suggestions?

This may be a stupid question, but do you have the aspect ratio on your TV set to widescreen? When I just changed the settings in the Wii menu to widescreen, mine stayed 4:3 but kind of squished. Once I changed the aspect ratio of my TV it worked like a champ.sportdan30 wrote:I received the component cables today, however I can't figure out how to make it widescreen.
