Sven....the sad thing is...with Rooney's F'n meltdown and the missed PK's...the pressure is off of you.

But how could you have Lampard take the first PK?.....he hasnt ahd the touch all tourney...I know he buries them for Chelsea...but why? Bad bad decision...among many.

I hope Rooney gets roasted.

I would rather lose in the group stage then have that piece of %^it be the poster boy of soccer for my nation. I would take Crouch over him in a heartbeat.

Lets see Sven...lets take 4 strikers to the biggest tourney in the world.

One (Owen) who hasn't played in 5 months...and is out of form.

One (Rooney) who was a huge gamble, not only because of the foot, but chances were he would meltdown at any moment.

One (Crouch) who is a good sub.

One (Walcott))...that has NEVER PLAYED IN HE FU&&&* PREM!!!!!!!!!

Sven...good luck to the team that wastes their money on your talents next...God hope it is not the US.

Rooney, England had to play 58 FU***** minutes a man down becasue of you...and they still almost won. I hope your teammates roast you. I hope they sell you down the river. You are a FN disgrace.

The fitting thing for you...is that Ken Doll Ronaldo gets to have the last laugh over you considering he buried the match winner. I hope he rubs it in your face to no end....rub away Ronaldo.

Heck....he is eons better then Dave O'Brien and Marcelo Balboa.

I heard Balboa say "knock the ball around" for the last time in the 70th minute. I immediately switched to Univision and I wont look back. The picture is ten times better.

You know the announcers are bad...when my wife..who has a passing interest in soccer at best....complains about the bland..monotonous announcing.

I need to get that link to ESPN to join the thousands in complaints.

Can't do that unless they want to add subs to the game.

Sorry fot he many posts but I need to get this stuff off of my chest.

I am knock going to knock Lampard on the PK...he hit it well and Ricardo made a great play...guessed right. Lampard kept it low to play it safe ..but he hit it well.....same with Carragher. Gerrard blasted it...but hit it 5 feet right of center...easy save unless the goalie goes the wrong way.

Two Portuguese choked big time...and England still lost...becasue of Ricardo's brilliance.

Ricardo is the hero for Portugal.

Another question...what was Hargreaves doing going so far forward during the extra time...where was Lampard and Gerrard?

What a bad way to go out. I know all too well from the 94 Cup when Italy lost the final on pk's and Beto struck one off the bar. I really wanted to see an England/Brazil semi. Hopefully my Italian boys can come up with another 4-1 victory over Germany but apparently they looked horrible in a 3-0 victory and their 24th straight game unbeaten, right JRod?
I am a patient boy.

Thats who was doing the game?....I had Univision just in case it was JP...swithched to ABC for post game...

You put the game on Univision and run your music playlist and its fun...Listening to American announcers is a bad idea...They dont have any idea what the f*** they are talking about....

Which strikers would you have taken instead ?

Defoe - who wasn't first choice for Spurs, and couldn't even oust Mido, who Spurs didn't even bother extending his loan ? 16 caps and 1 goal ?

Bent - I've seen better players in the local park

Beattie - if it was the World Cup of Pie Eating, maybe

England were short on quality strikers anyway, but you couldn't predict Owen being both shite and unlucky, or Rooney's one braincell burning out.

Nor could SGE predict Lampard's complete loss of form

He's a fair better manager than most credit him for - England's most successful in terms of qualification for major trophies. But once the whistle goes, its up to the players, and too many of them bottled it.

I never thought I'd say this, but the one bright spot has been Owen Hargreaves (and maybe an honourable mention for Aaron Lennon).

Christiano Ronaldo better hope he gets his move to Real Madrid, because if he stays in England, I give his legs about 2 months in an intact state.

DT

PS - I must admit, even when Portugal missed the second one, that at no point did I think England would win. There is only one way to take penalties - smash it as hard as you can.

I dont' understand Spanish at all but I listen to the univision broadcasts since you can feel how passionate they are about the sport. and the GOOOLLLL thing is always fun to hear.

too bad we can't have the networks here get an american verison of those spanish annoucers. I think someone like that can really promote the sport in the U.S.

At various stages during the build up to this tournament, I may have inferred that Owen Hargreaves is a big jessie who serves no useful purpose on a football pitch and occupies a role that could be just as successfully filled by, say, a tin of Spam. After this tournament, and especially after watching him have what must surely be one of the best matches of his life, I think I owe him an apology.

Rooney's fit of pique was as pointless as it was predictable, and since I'm currently wearing an England shirt with his name on the back, it's caused me no end of problems on the way home from the pub.

Dave, I recall in another thread that you put forward the name of Dean Ashton as a man you could have taken to the World Cup. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but could we not have found a use for him?

As for the penalties, Lampard was denied more by a good save than any error on his part, Gerrard's was much too central and I'm really not sure what to say about Jamie Carragher, since his first penalty was an absolute cracker. I don't blame him for changing his mind on the second kick, but when he'd hit such a good first effort why not stick with it? Not that his retake was awful, mind, though I don't suppose it matters now in any case.

Dave,

You City fans going to give Rooney a hard time next season?

In fairness to Erickson, the match was there for England to take. Rule #1 in football is you have to put the bloody ball in the net. England managed to bugger up a significant number of excellent chances - Lampards missed volley, Rooney's airball, etc. etc.)

But tactically they looked pretty inept for much of the match. There just seemed to be a continual muddle in the middle of the park. And can anyone please get it through to Ashely and Joe Cole that they don't have to cut inside every bloody time they come forward.

Best wishes,

Doug

Friggin' Tivo. Lost the 2 extra periods. Oh well, glad I did. Games of this magnitude on penalty kicks is a disservice to the game. Ending on PKs is gay. Settle it like men.

Forgot about Dean Ashton - I guess I'd have taken him, though I don't think he has any caps and only one season at top level. Still, that's one season more than Theo Walcott.

I just wonder whether Lampard has been found out at this level as well - be interesting to say what happens at Chelsea when Ballack turns up.

I am now transferring my interest from hereon in to Germany - Italy and Portugal are cheating scum, Brazil aren't the entertainers of old and no Englishman could root for France.

Doug - your points were pretty much spot on, except that it won't just be City fans giving the greasy haired ponce a workover, it'll be fans of all sides (including Man U) - and by all accounts, Shrek is none too happy with him....

After one half of play Brazil looks to be in trouble. Too bad France couldn't capitalize on their chances. It could easily be 2-0 if France could finish.

I don't see how teams could continue to play. Every OT played this world cup, was a display of fatigue.

Sven costed this team a loss. How can you expect to win when you don't score?

This was a disappointing game.

That was a heckova finish in the Brasil/France game...a lot of action as time ticked away in the last few min. and extra time. At least this one didn't go to penalties.
