I love the Wilco commercial.
I can't even begin to respect a band until they start to understand that they have to cash in. They're just insufferable while they're in that endless "artistic integrity" phase.

speaking of the VW ads, an interesting take from pitchfork:

Foul corporations! Don't they know that navel-gazing music bloggers and legions of lemming MySpace users are supposed to be the arbiters of my ambition? In digital media today, corporations are regaining their power as the arbiters of your long-term ambitions

Wow! Really? The opening track of that record may be my favorite of the year! There are a couple duds but the good far outweigh the bad IMO.greggsand wrote:Biggest disappointment this year: Kings Of Leon!
How did that go sooo wrong?
It took me a few listens to "get it" though. Seeing them live this tour helped as well.

I actually went to my first ever "stadium rock" show this weekend (after 34 years....). Being a lifelong indie-snob, most of my shows have been in clubs/ballrooms/etc..lexbur wrote:And then one day you find,

I saw the Police at Dodger Stadium saturday. It was a hoot & crazy to see 55,000 people there. 2 big bonuses:
1. I got a free ticket
2.I was in the front row (12 feet form the stage) whoo hoo...
Good stuff, it was nice seeing the police. The biggest kick was getting to walk around the field at dodger stadium. Foo Fighters opened - lame.

I just picked up the new Ryan Adams and am only listening to it for the first time now...so far so good. I really liked Gold and Cold Roses and I'm hoping that the below review from Stephen King holds true for the new one:
"I think there are really only two kinds of pop music CDs these days. There are the ones you listen to only once or twice, maybe downloading the single good song to your iPod or computer; then there are others that grow stronger, sweeter, and more necessary each time you play them. Gold was that way; Cold Roses was that way; so was Jacksonville City Nights. I won't say Adams is the best North American singer-songwriter since Neil Young...but I won't say he isn't, either. What I know is there has never been a Ryan Adams record quite as strong and together as Easy Tiger; it's got enough blue-eyed, blue-steel soul (with the faintest country tinge) to make me think of both Marvin Gaye and the Righteous Brothers. Probably ridiculous, but true. And the songs themselves are beautiful--the lyrics tightly focused and brief, the feeling one of melancholy calm that will probably be a revelation to fans that remember the old, sometimes angry Ryan Adams.
Now there's this, maybe the best Ryan Adams CD ever. And I know you want to listen to it right away. But slow down. Take your time. This album asks for that, and it will reward your full attention.
In other words--easy, Tiger.

Couldn't disagree more with King's review of "Easy Tiger."
The album breaks hardly any ground at all. It sounds like an extension of the "Cold Roses" and "Jacksonville City Nights" vibe with some of Adams' older sounds mixed in.
Wilco made a "mellow, accessible" album that's interesting with "Sky Blue Sky" because one, the musicianship is excellent and two, the sound is something different and possibly evolutionary for the band.
Adams' "mellow, accessible" album isn't interesting because it summons a lot of the same material and styles that he has strip-mined from the musical gravel bed in the past. What separates this record from the last few Adams' records? Not much.
Then again, Adams has been given a free ride by many reviewers who confuse being prolific with being brilliant. Maybe I'd be a bit more tolerant of Adams' rehashes if he didn't release everything that came through his head and out of his guitar on an album. But since he does, it makes his "sound" get old more quickly than other artists.
I like Ryan Adams, but this album does little or nothing for me. "Cold Roses" was superior in just about every aspect.
Take care,
PK

"A Year in the Wilderness," the new album from former X bassist John Doe, is pretty good. Fairly low-fi but an interesting listen. "Hotel Ghost" definitely has some of that old "X sound," too.

That's cool of course(that's why music is a hoot to discuss), but I ain't the only one hatin' on the new Kings of Leon. IMO, every record was getting better and better, but the new one is just a head-scratcher. "Charmer"? "On Call"? How many times can you listen to those songs? Other than a 7-minute opener, it comes-off as kinda lazy(imo). They have a rep of being band that "gets lead around by their label like a cow with a ring in it's nose" (to mis-quote Albini). Everyone seems more interested in pimping Caleb's dreamy eyes over the music. I'm still rooting for them, and will definitely see them live - hell, you should see all the hotties that come out their shows in LA. Best looking crowds since the Strokes heyday....GTHobbes wrote:Didn't like the Kings or the new Ryan Adams' cd..? Having spent some time living in West Virginia, I love the song Charmer...I think it rocks hard once you get your head around the song. Like the other KOL records, this one took a few listens but we're half way through 2007 and so far it's my hands down album of the year. Counting the bonus song I got through ITunes (making it 14 or 15 in all), I love 'em all except Camaro, which is the only throw away track on the cd, IMO. I saw 'em in a packed house here in Atlanta last month and all the new songs come across great live, too...including Knocked Up, On Call (a big crowd favorite), and the afore-mentioned Charmer, which also seemed to go over good live.
As for the new Ryan Adams cd, I've only listened to it a few times today but I can already tell there are going to be 5-6 songs I like right away, and I'm sure there will be a couple of others that will really grow on me over time. It sounds a lot like the songs I like off of Gold and Cold Roses, which to me is a good thing. I hate it when bands/artists pull a 90s era U2 and purposefully f*** with a good thing in the name of creative growth. All the great bands/artists have their own great sounds...that's what makes them great. The only artist/band I can think of whose style of music changed for the better over time was the Beatles. If Ryan Adams keeps spitting out good mellow rock songs like these for the rest of his life, I'll keep buying. I wish Beck would do the same thing.

Well yeah of course, the Ryan Adams fans that liked Gold have probably liked most of his releases since... That was my (and maybe PK's) point. So we all agree. Oh, the "f*** with a good thing" don't forget 'RockNRoll' by Ryan Adams.GTHobbes wrote:As for the new Ryan Adams cd, I've only listened to it a few times today but I can already tell there are going to be 5-6 songs I like right away, and I'm sure there will be a couple of others that will really grow on me over time. The more I listen to John Doe's new record, "A Year in the Wilderness," the more I really like it.
"The Golden State" is one of the better songs you'll hear this year by any artist. A great track. Have a listen:

This isn't new (although I just recently found out about it), but are there any fans of Mark Lanegan, the former singer of the Screaming Trees, or Scottish singer Isobel Campbell, former singer of Belle & Sebastian (I don't know any of their stuff)? I've always been a big fan of Mark Lanegan's (Whiskey for the Holy Ghost is one of my favorite albums), but I'd never even knew that he and this Campbell lady made an album together. If you've never heard his voice, he's got something of a Tom Waits whiskey and cigarettes thing going on, only better, IMO. The music on this one reminds me of something straight out of Twin Peaks in some places...haunting melody kind've stuff. I've been listening to it in heavy rotation since I stumbled across it a couple of weeks ago and figured I'd throw a plug in for it here, even though it's over a year old at this point. Great stuff.
